Apple Watch を語り尽くす

３月９日の Spring forward イベント直前のポッドキャストがおもしろい。

いつもはアプリ開発者の苦労や秘話を聞く「Debug」［Guy English と Rene Ritchie がホスト］が Apple Watch の特集を組んでいる。

ゲストは開発者で時計の世界に詳しい Jon Edwards と John Gruber だ。

ギークには不案内な時計の世界を熟知した Jon Edwards が機械式腕時計からクォーツ革命、ハイエンド高級腕時計の世界、Apple Watch に至るまで縦横に語る。

話したいことはすべて話したと Gruber がいうだけあってとても濃い中味。

印象に残った発言をいくつか・・・

Jon Edwards：

・デザイン的にデジタルクラウンは中心にきてほしかった（バッテリーチャージャーのせい？）
・ケースまわりにもっと Force Touch が欲しかった
・WatchKit には文字面（watch face）の UI エレメントが少ない
・機械式時計の detent［戻り止め、つめ］に相当する digital detent が Taptic Engine
・これは大きな可能性を開く
・これまでの Jony Ive の発言からして必ずしも製品寿命（product longevity）は長くなさそう
・デザイン的にはモジュラーではなく swappable ではない
・だからゴールドウォッチは５桁ではなく４桁どまりでは

John Gruber：

・相手の思いを伝える方法としてのハートビート（好きなクラスの女の子にハートビートを送る、など）
・パーソナルで親密なコミュニケーションに道を開く Taptic Engine
・Angela Ahrendts を引き抜いた殺し文句は Apple Watch をまかせるからではなかったか

ジョン・グルーバーの直前予想

Apple Watch は不明なことが多すぎるから予想するのが楽しいと John Gruber はいう。

その彼が明日未明に迫った Spring forward イベントについて直前の予想をしている。（手術をしたので今回は出席できない。）

予想の中心は Apple Watch の価格設定だ。

これまでのステンレススチール製 Watch モデル — 千ドル、ハイエンドの Edition モデル — １万ドルという予想を一部修正している。

ステンレススチール製の Watch

ほとんどのひとが買いたいと思うのはステンレススチール製の Apple Watch だ。だから本体価格で 500 ドル前後、それにバンドのオプションで 100 〜 300 ドルプラスで買いたいと期待する。

But the steel Apple Watch, that’s something that most people still look at as for them. And so they expect the starting price to be around $500, and the various leather and metal band options to cost $100-300 more.

しかしステンレススチール製の Watch が 500 ドルならなぜ Sport は 350 ドルなのか。たった 150 ドルの価格差では単一モデルの価格の違いにしか見えず正当化できない。ステンレススチールは Sport より（いちばん安いゴム製スポーツバンドのときですら）かなり高く価格設定してこそ初めて意味がある。・・・Sport とステンレススチールでは見かけも手触りもすべて異なる。金属も（アルミニウムとステンレススチール）、仕上げも（つや消しと高度研磨）、ディスプレイも（ガラスとサファイア）、ケースの背面も（プラスチックとセラミックおよびサファイア）、すべてが異なるのだ。

But if the starting price for the steel Apple Watch is $500, I don’t see why Apple Watch Sport exists at $350. $150 difference does not justify the difference. If they were that close in price, there’d only be one of them. Sport and steel only make sense as separate collections if the steel collection is significantly higher in price, even at the entry level with the rubber Sport band. […] With Sport and steel Apple Watches, everything you can see or touch is different. Different metal (aluminum vs. steel), different finishes (matte vs. highly-polished), different displays (glass vs. sapphire), different case backs (plastic vs. ceramic and sapphire). […]

広い価格帯にまたがる

Apple Watch の３つのコレクション — Sport・ステンレススチール・Edition — は単純に３つの価格で表わすことはできないと思う。そうではなく、３つのコレクションは 349 ドルから１万ドルまでの連続した価格帯に広がると思う。（もし自分の直感が正しければ、金のリンクブレスレットも登場するはずで、その場合は２万ドルにも達するだろう。）

The three collections of Apple Watch — Sport, steel, and Edition — will not, I think, be represented by three basic prices. Instead, the three collections will comprise a continuum of price points, ranging from $349 to $10,000 (or $20,000, if my hunch is correct that there are gold Link Bracelets waiting to be revealed).

買いたいと思う欲求が高くする

みんながステンレススチール製 Watch を、それもゴム製（フルオロエラストマー製スポーツバンド）ではないものを欲しがるという事実 — 欲求 — こそが高くなる理由なのだ。アップルはみんなが支払いたいと思う価格ではなく、支払ってもいいという価格に設定するのだ。

The fact that so many people want the steel Apple Watch and non-Sport bands shows why they will cost more: desire. Apple sets prices not based on what people want to pay, but what people are willing to pay.

これは疑いもなくアップルにとって新しい領域だ。アップルは内部のコンピュータ部品が同じものを素材の贅沢さだけが異なる、そんな価格帯で売ったことはこれまでない。

This is without question new territory for Apple. They’ve never sold products with the same computing internals at different pricing tiers based solely on the luxuriousness of the materials.

アップグレードの可能性はない

The Modular S1 and Upgradeability

第１世代の iPhone ことを考えてみよう。それを今日の A8 SoC でアップグレードすることを想像するのだ。良くなることは確かだが、低解像度の Retina でないディスプレイはそのままだし、古い EDGE ネットワークのまま。ひどいカメラではビデオも撮れない、などなど。Apple Watch 内部の「コンピュータ」がすべてなのではない。コンピュータ部品を含めたすべてが重要なのだ。ヘルスセンサーも、ディスプレイも、バッテリーも、Taptic Engine も、デジタルクラウンも通信能力も — すべてが重要なのだ。

Take a first generation iPhone. Now imagine if you could upgrade it to today’s A8 SoC. It’d be better than it was before, that’s for sure. But it’d still have a low-resolution non-retina display. It’d still be stuck with EDGE cellular networking. It’d still have a crappy camera that couldn’t even shoot video. Etc. The “computer” inside Apple Watch just isn’t all that important. Everything is important. The health sensors, the display, the battery, the Taptic Engine, the digital crown, the networking capabilities, everything.

数年後には Apple Watch は Wi-Fi や携帯電話ネットワークですらサポートするかもしれない。１回の充電で数日保つようになるかもしれない。しかしこれらの進歩はどれも S2 チップを S3 チップに交換するだけでは得られないのだ。

A few years from now we might have Apple Watches that support Wi-Fi or even cellular networking. They might go several days on a single charge. None of those improvements would come from an upgrade to an S2 or S3 chip.

この点については自分が間違っていればとも思うけれど、それでは辻褄が合わない。もし自分が間違っているとすれば、それは時計内部のすべてが更新されるときだけだ。ディスプレイも、電子部品も、バッテリーも、センサーも、ケースとバンド以外のすべてがアップグレードされるときだけだ。そうなるとは思えないが、最低限可能性はなきにしもあらずだ。そうなれば Edition の寿命は世の高級腕時計並みになる。その場合でも S1 のモジュール化とは関係ない。

I’d love to be wrong on this one, but I don’t think it makes any sense. And if I am wrong, the upgrade would have to include the entire innards of the watch — new display, new electronics, new battery, new sensors. Everything but the case and the bands. That still seems unlikely to me, but it’s at least plausible. And it could put Apple Watch Edition on par with existing luxury watches in terms of lifespan. But even in that case, the modular nature of the S1 doesn’t really have much to do with it.

Apple Watch ソフトウェア

アップル本社の小さな Town Hall ではなく Yerba Buena でイベントが開かれることから、発表すべき内容がたっぷりあるのものと思われる。Apple Watch のソフトウェアや使い勝手について知るべきことが沢山あるに違いない。昨年９月の発表時に Tim Cook はもっと見せたいのに時間が足りないといったではないか。先月クパティーノの本社に１００人以上のサードパーティのデベロッパやデザイナーを集めたと聞いている。Apple Watch の実機でテストを行ない、WatchKit に磨きをかけるためだ。だからサードパーティの Watch アプリのデモがたっぷり拝めるにちがいない。

Holding the event at Yerba Buena instead of the smaller confines of their campus Town Hall makes me think Apple has a lot to show. There must be more to learn about Apple Watch’s software and experience — Tim Cook even said so back in September, explaining that they simply didn’t have enough time then to show more. I’ve heard that Apple has been hosting over 100 third-party developers and designers in Cupertino for the last month, to test and refine WatchKit apps on production Apple Watch hardware, so I expect a bunch of third-party Watch app demos too.

Apple Watch 以外には

Photos の Mac パプリックベータバージョンから考えて、その完成版のデモと、全デバイスで使える iCloud Photos のデモもあるだろう。Mac のソフトウェアが取り上げられるのなら、ウワサの１２インチ極薄 MacBook Air も発表されるかもしれない。自分の直感では新 MacBook Air は準備万端整っていると思う。（しかしウワサの大型 iPad の方は未だだろう。）

The new Mac version of Photos is in public beta, so I expect a full demo of that and the now-complete iCloud Photos cross-device experience. And if they’re going to talk about Mac software, maybe they’ll reveal the rumored 12-inch thinner-than-ever MacBook Air, too. My gut tells me the new MacBook Air could be ready, and it also tells me that the purported bigger iPad is not.

新しいジョブズ本『Becoming Steve Jobs』

スティーブ・ジョブズの新しい本が出た。Brent Schlender および Rick Tetzeli 共著の『Becoming Steve Jobs』だ。

めずらしく John Gruber がその書評を書いている。

執筆者にひとを得た

ひとことでいえばこの本は世界が待っていたスティーブ・ジョブズの本だ。ジョブズがいないのにどうしてそんな本が書けるのかといぶかしく思うかもしれない。しかし実のところ彼もちゃんと作業に加わっているのだ。Brent Schlender は WSJ や Fortune の記者だった２５年の間に、仕事で数えきれないほど広範囲にわたってジョブズのインタビューを行なった。1991 年のジョブズとビル・ゲイツの共同インタビューを覚えているだろうか。あれは Schlender の仕事だった。この本を読めば分かるように Schlender とジョブズは非常に親密な関係を築いていた。

It is, in short, the book about Steve Jobs that the world deserves. You might wonder how such a book could be written without Jobs’s participation, but effectively, he did participate. Schlender, in his work as a reporter for The Wall Street Journal and Fortune, interviewed Jobs extensively numerous times spanning 25 years. Remember the 1991 joint interview with Jobs and Bill Gates? That was Schlender. As the book makes clear, Jobs and Schlender had a very personal relationship.

ジョブズをよく知るひとたちの協力

『Becoming Steve Jobs』はスマートで正確、情報と洞察に富み、そしてときに胸に迫る。Schlender と Tetzeli は人間としてのジョブズを生き生きと描いている。彼らはジョブズが仕事をしたハイテク業界を熟知している。さらにまた、ジョブズを最もよく知るひとびとから驚くべき協力を得ている。アップルやピクサーの現在および過去の同僚たち — とくに Tim Cook — やジョブズ未亡人の Laurene Powell Jobs がそうだ。

The book is smart, accurate, informative, insightful, and at times, utterly heartbreaking. Schlender and Tetzeli paint a vivid picture of Jobs the man, and also clearly understand the industry in which he worked. They also got an astonishing amount of cooperation from the people who knew Jobs best: colleagues past and present from Apple and Pixar — particularly Tim Cook — and his widow, Laurene Powell Jobs.

不可欠の参考資料

この本は、よく知られたジョブズの生涯とキャリアを改めて正確かつ魅力的に語り直したものだ。もちろん新しい内容も含まれている。あっと驚く話もあるがいまは触れないでといわれている。・・『Becoming Steve Jobs』は今後何十年にもわたって必須不可欠の参考資料となるだろう。

The book is an accurate, engaging retelling of the known history of Jobs’s life and career, but also contains a significant amount of new reporting. There are stories in this book that are going to be sensational. (I’ve promised to keep them to myself for now.) […] Becoming Steve Jobs is going to be an essential reference for decades to come.

Walter Isaacson のジョブズ伝記本には不満だった John Gruber がたいへん気に入ったようだ。

執筆者にひとを得たこと、情報ソースの質の高さが大きいと思われる。

調べてみたかぎり、書評を書いたのはいまのところ Gruber だけのようだ。

自分の興味を引いたのはタイトル、とくに「いかにして向こう見ずの成り上がり者が明確なビジョンを持つリーダーに進化したか」（The Evolution of a Reckless Upstart into a Visionary Leader）というサブタイトルだ。

ジョブズの成功のカギはアップルを逐われた時代にあったと長年感じてきた。公認伝記本ではあまり取り上げられなかった視点だが、この新しい本はその時代に光をあててジョブズの実像に肉迫してくれるのではないかと期待が持てる。

この『Becoming Steve Jobs』といい、先日の『Jonathan Ive and the Future of Apple』といい、従来のウワサ本、伝説本とは異なる著作物が出始めたことは注目に値する。

Apple Watch ゴールドは１万ドル以上する

昨年９月の Apple Watch 発表直後、「Apple Watch ゴールドは５千ドルするかもしれない」と最初にいいだしたのは John Gruber だった。

その彼が改めて Edition モデルは１万ドルから２万ドルするだろうといっている。

ゴールドモデルのエントリー価格が５千ドルといったときみんなはジョーダンをいっていると思った。しかしまじめもまじめ、大まじめだった。

Most people think I’m joking when I say the gold ones are going to start at $5,000. I couldn’t be more serious.

知れば知るほど

考えれば考えるほど、また時計業界やぜいたく品、成長著しい中国富裕階級について知れば知るほど、その確信が強くなる。

The more I think about it, and the more I learn about the watch industry, the world of luxury goods, and the booming upper class of China, the better I feel about that bet.

今では Edition モデルは１万ドルからスタートすると考えている。もしバンドやブレスレットに対する自分の直感がが正しければ、上限は２万ドルにとどくだろう。自分は一桁も二桁も間違っていたが、そのことを Apple Watch 発表時に友人の Vincent Nguyen は見抜いていたのだ。

I now think Edition models will start around $10,000 — and, if my hunch is right about bands and bracelets, the upper range could go to $20,000. I was off by a factor of two, and my friend Vincent, I think, nailed it back on the day Apple Watch was introduced.

4. Deluxe leather: Modern Buckle for 38mm models, Leather Loop for 42mm models. Each with a choice of three colors.

これらグループの価格差が重要だ。エントリーモデルの Sport Band は７百ドル、Link Bracelet が千ドルだろう。今でもステンレスモデルは千ドルだろうと考えているが、バンド次第で更に数百ドル値段が高くなる。

I think the spread between these tiers could be significant, ranging from, say, $700 for the entry model with the Sport Band to well over $1,000 for the Link Bracelet. I still think the average for the steel Apple Watch will be around $1,000, but depending on your strap choice, you’ll pay several hundred less or more.

さらにそれに色が加わる。要はバンドとカラーで差別化するのだ。

Edition モデルの品揃えの少なさ

それに比べると Edition モデルの品揃えの少なさが際立っている。

Which brings me to the Edition collection’s curiously thin lineup of strap choices.

Edition モデルは１万ドル以上の時計だが、その大半はラバースポーツバンドで、349 ドルのバンドとほとんど見分けがつかない。

These are (I think) $10,000+ watches, but half of them come with rubber sport bands that are nearly indistinguishable from the bands on the $349 Sport collection.

最上級モデルは２万ドル

見せびらかしたいのならゴールドだ。ゴールドが好きだから金の時計にするというひともいるが、金時計を見せびらかしたいから買うというひともいる。そんなひとはよろこんで２万ドルのゴールドバンド時計を買うのだ。

Glaringly omitted is a Link Bracelet. I’d place a side bet Apple withheld it in September, and will unveil it as a surprise option at the event they’ll hold before releasing the watches. If you’re going to go gold, go gold. Some people buy a gold watch simply because they like it. Others buy a gold watch because they want everyone to know they wear a gold watch. The latter group will gladly pay $20,000 for a watch with gold band.

自分の予想では、Edition モデルの組み合わせはいちばん高価なゴールドの Link Bracelet が２万ドル、Milanese Loop が１万５千ドル、Leather Loop が１万２千５百ドルになるだろう。

I’m guessing Apple will offer Edition models with gold Link Bracelets for $20,000, and perhaps Milanese Loops for $15,000 and a Leather Loop for around $12,500.

ハイテク製品に非ず

Apple Watch の Edition モデルはハイテク製品ではない。だから値段もそのように考えてはいけない。

Apple Watch Edition is not a tech product, so don’t try to price it like one.

Apple Watch の Edition モデルは高級腕時計なのだ。この分野に参入しようとするアップルの野心は無限大だ。アップルは Rolex や Omega などのスイス高級時計が競うマーケットに破壊的価格で参入しようとしているのではない。同じ価格帯のこれら企業に対し、アップルが破壊的だと考える機能で競おうとしているのだ。

Apple Watch Edition is a luxury wrist watch. Apple’s ambitions in this arena, I am convinced, are almost boundless. They’re not entering the market against Rolex, Omega, and the rest of the Swiss luxury watch establishment with disruptive prices. They’re entering the market against those companies going head-to-head on pricing, with disruptive (they think) features.

果たしてうまくいくだろうか？ 実際に売れるだろうか？ 自分には分からない。しかしうまくいくとアップルは考えているのだと思う。

Will it work? Will people actually buy these? I have no idea. But I think Apple thinks it’s going to work.

Apple Watch ゴールドエディションが１万ドル以上という John Gruber の主張にはみんなが目を剥いた。

かつて iPad の登場直前、当時アップルの懐深く食い入っていた Yukari Iwatani Kane が iPad の価格は 1000 ドルになるとリークしたことがあった。発表されてみると実際は 499 ドルだった。

これはアップルが意図的に「イベント直前の数週間は期待値を抑えておくため 1000 ドルという価格に仕向けたのではないか」という観測まで出たほどだ。

今回の１万ドルもその手ではないかと勘ぐる読者もいたようだ。

それでも John Gruber は自説を翻さない。

Apple Watch の価格設定に関する私の記事をみて、少なからぬ読者がステンレススチール製および 18K ゴールドエディションの Apple Watch はそうならないのではとメールやツイートでいってきた。そんなことはない。アルミケースの Sport モデルが 349 ドルからと分かっているのがその主たる理由だ。

In the wake of my piece last week on Apple Watch pricing, a few DF readers have emailed or tweeted to ask if that might not be what’s going on with the prices for the steel Apple Watch and gold Edition models. I don’t think so. Mainly because we already know Apple Watch’s starting price: $349 for the Sport model.

自分が耳にしているところでは、Apple Watch 千ドル、ゴールド Edition が１万ドルプラスという私の予想はかなりいい線をいってると思う。（Sport Band のステンレススチールモデルが 749 ドル — Sport モデルのほぼ倍 — からではないかという点についてはまだ検討中だが・・・）

From what I’m hearing, I guessed pretty good last week: about $1,000 for Apple Watch, and $10,000+ for Edition. (I’m still thinking $749 starting price for the steel Apple Watch with Sport Band — roughly twice the price of the aluminum Sport model.)

Gruber としてはよほど自信があるのだろう。

そういえば、技術的に陳腐化をまぬがれないガジェットにそんな高値をつけられるのかという問いに対して、「コンピュータシステム全体を一つのチップに組み込んだ S1 SiP」がカギだと主張したのも Gruber だった。

この調子ではまだまだ続編がありそうだ・・・

A couple things we learn from the hires: Evident by this long list of automotive experts, it’s clear Apple’s ambitions go well beyond just its iOS-based CarPlay in-dash system. In fact, the majority of employees on this list that are reporting to team leader Steve Zadesky come from an automotive hardware background and many only joined Apple recently or around the time Cook reportedly approved the electric car project.

上梓ということばを使ったのは、まるで書籍のように長大な量だからだ。16000 語を超えるボリュームはもはや記事と呼ぶには大きすぎる。

読み始めてみたが量が膨大すぎて机の前では気が散ってとても読めない。

結局夜中に目が覚めたとき、ベッドの中で iPhone に読み上げさせて聞いた。聞き終わった頃には空が白みはじめていた。まさに本１冊読んだ気分だ。

そんな長時間続けて聞けたのは非常に興味深い内容だったからだ。これまで書かれたことがない内容が数多く含まれている。

・Jony Ive の生い立ち（Ive 夫人との出会いも）
・ジョブズ夫人のジョブズ観や Ive 観
・Ive のデザインスタジオの詳しい風景
・固有名詞で登場するデザインチーム

公認自伝本の批判

この作品は完全に集中して読むべきだ。だから一部だけ引用して読者の興味を殺ぐことはしたくはない。はっきりしているのは Parker がきちんと理解しているということだ。これは Walter Isaacson のジョブズ自伝本とは著しい対照を為す。事実 Ive は Isaacson の本を上手にやっつけている。

The piece is worth your full undivided attention, so I won’t quote or spoil much. But what’s clear is that Parker gets it — in stark contrast to Steve Jobs’s anointed biographer Walter Isaacson. Ive, in fact, effectively trashed Isaacson’s book:

In a later conversation, Ive said that he’d read only parts of the book, but had seen enough to dislike it, for what he called inaccuracies. “My regard couldn’t be any lower,” he said, with unusual heat.

There’s much to digest, but I think the biggest takeaway is that Jony Ive is stretched very thin. The Watch is clearly his baby, but he’s also heavily involved in the supervision of Apple’s new campus and he’s working with Angela Ahrendts on a heretofore unannounced redesign of Apple’s retail stores.

People are calling The New Yorker profile of Jony Ive the most important thing written about Apple in quite a while, and I’d have to concur.

Not only is it full of fascinating details, it puts Ive at the center of Apple, where he belongs. As the piece’s author, Ian Parker, writes: “More than ever, Ive is the company.”

But the inaccuracies are not the book’s biggest failing: It’s how little insight Isaacson provides into the inner workings of Apple. Steve Jobs reveals little about how Apple actually operates. The development of the iPhone, for example, was a three-year effort with countless problems and restarts, but it’s covered in a single chapter and told from Jobs’ point of view. Jobs was central to the iPhone, of course, but more so were the designers in Ive’s studio, whose story wasn’t covered in Isaacson’s book.

The design studio is soup-to-nuts — and that’s why Ive dissed Isaacson’s biography of Jobs. Isaacson allowed Jobs to take most of the credit for Apple’s work without digging further, leaving a central truth untold: that Ive’s studio and the 19 designers who work there are the primary source of Apple’s creativity. Jobs was the facilitator and a major collaborator —- whose role absolutely should not be diminished — but his contribution was not the only one.

然るみんなの耳にはジョブズの声しか聞こえなかった。Ive の側から見た話は語られないままだった。

And yet Jobs’ voice is essentially the only one anybody has heard. Ive’s side of the story remains to be told.

In order to fit the larger screen into a footprint about the size of the current 11-inch model, the bezels on the display have been reduced on all sides.

もし本当なら Mark Gurman のすごいスクープだ。変更点は多々あるが、ポートが２つだけ（ヘッドホンと USB Type-C ポート）というところが特出している。外部ディスプレイにも、電源にも、周辺機器にもこの USB ポートひとつで接続する。（MagSafe、Thunderbolt、それに USB 3 を落としたのはよく分かるが、USB Type-C ポートがひとつだけというのは解せない。最低２つは必要じゃないか？）

Hell of a scoop by Mark Gurman, if true. Numerous interesting changes, most especially that the claim that it has just two ports: one for headphones and a lone USB Type-C port that would be used for everything from connecting an external display, power, and connecting peripherals. (I can totally see Apple dropping MagSafe, Thunderbolt, and USB 3 ports — but I don’t get why they would include only one USB Type-C port. Why not two?)

他に気に入った変更点：左右矢印キーを普通サイズのキーにしたこと。高さが半分サイズのキーなんて理解し難かった。

Another detail I like: the full-height keys for left and right arrow. Making those keys half-height never made sense to me.

グルマンの記事から「Retina」ということばが欠けている点が特に目立つ。

もし Gurman のいうようにポートがひとつだけ（新しい USB Type-C）というのは奇妙だが、でもそれほど薄くなるというのなら、その価値はありそうだ。

If the thing really does only have one port (a new, USB Type-C), as Gurman notes, that would be odd, but if it really that thin, worth it, in my opinion.

それより「高解像度のディスプレイ」の方が気になる。それって Retina のことだと考えたい。そう思わない連中が多いようだが・・・

More important to me is the “higher-resolution display”. I assumed that meant Retina, but others aren’t so sure.

これまでの MacBook Air の軌跡を考えてみよう。2008 年に登場したときのデザインはクレージーそのものだった。正気とは思えないほど薄くかつ軽くするために、これまでラップトップの標準的機能と考えられてきた数々のものを投げ棄てたのだ。自分がオリジナル MacBook Air のレビューを書いたとき、「妥協」ということばを１０回も使ったほどだ。

Meanwhile, consider the trajectory of the MacBook Air. When it was released in 2008, it was a crazy design. It threw away a huge number of what we considered to be standard laptop features in order to be insanely thin and light. In my review of the original Air for Macworld, I used the word “compromise” ten times.

光学ドライブなし。どのマックと比べても信じられないほど遅いプロセッサ。たった 80GB のハードディスク。（SSD なら 999 ドル余分に出してもたったの 64GB ぽっち！） USB ポートはひとつだけ。かてて加えて最低価格が 1799 ドルもする。

No optical drive. An incredibly slow processor, compared to all other Macs. A teeny-tiny 80GB hard drive (or an even tinier 64GB SSD for $999 more!). A single USB port. And, to top it all off, a price that started at $1799.

もし Gurman の記事が正しければ、この新しいモデルは MacBook Air ラインを MacBook Pro ラインから引き離すものだ。事実これは MacBook Air をそのルーツに戻すものだ。従来のコンピュータデザインの枠を踏み外しているため最初はクレージーに思えても、形式上必要とされるスペックなんかどうでもいいターゲットユーザーにはアピールするに違いない、そんな選択肢に溢れた製品としてのルーツに戻すのだ。

If Gurman’s reports are accurate, this new model pulls the MacBook Air line away from the MacBook Pro. In fact, it returns the MacBook Air to its roots—as a product full of choices that we consider crazy at first, because they’re out of step with conventional computer design, but that will appeal to a target audience that doesn’t actually care about those de rigueur features.

いいかえれば、そんなラップトップをアップルは出したりするだろうか？ 専用の電源ケーブルも持たず、従来のたくさんのポートを捨て去り、未だかつて使用したことのないコネクターで電源や接続を行なう、そんなラップトップを薄くて軽いものを作るというためだけに出したりするだろうか？ アップルならきっとそうするに違いない。

In other words, would Apple release a laptop with no dedicated power cable, ditch a bunch of traditional ports, and funnel every bit of power and wired connectivity through a connector that it has never before used, all in the name of creating a thinner and lighter laptop? Are you kidding? Of course it would.

相方に Rene Ritchie を選んだ理由がおもしろい。

Rene Ritchie がアップルの事情に通じていることはよく知られている。iMore だけでなく数多くのポッドキャスト番組でも活躍中だ。

そんな彼もレギュラー番組ではゲストを立てて控え目に徹しているので、思いっきり彼に発言させようと相方に選んだのだという。

今年の回顧の中で興味深かった点：

最新のポッドキャスト The Talk Show で John Gruber はこういっている。「小鳥ちゃんの中の小ちゃな小鳥ちゃん」から聞いた話では、アップルは次世代 iPhone のカメラの改良を検討中で「これまでにない飛躍的なカメラの改良」になると。［1:11:00 ごろから］

In the latest episode of The Talk Show, John Gruber mentions that he’s heard “from a birdie of a birdie” that Apple is working on the “biggest camera jump ever” for the next iPhone.

「特に自分が耳にしたのは、来年はカメラが飛躍的な改良を遂げるかもしれないという話だ。それが何を意味するのかはっきりしないが、２つのレンズを備えた変わったシステムで、背面カメラには２つのレンズを使い、画質はデジタル一眼レフカメラ（DSLR）のレベルになると聞いている。」

The specific thing I heard is that next years camera might be the biggest camera jump ever. I don’t even know what sense this makes, but I’ve heard that it’s some kind of weird two-lens system where the back camera uses two lenses and it somehow takes it up into DSLR quality imagery.

ソニーの新しいカメラセンサー

Gruber のコメントが興味深く、もしかしたら本当かもしれないと思わせるのは、今日ソニーが発表した新しいスマートフォンカメラセンサーと関係あるからだ。1/2.4 インチという小さなデザインに 21 メガピクセルを組み込むセンサーだ。これまでずっとソニーはアップルの iPhone カメラセンサーのサプライヤーだった。

What makes Gruber’s comments interesting and possibly true is Sony’s announcement today regarding their new smartphone camera sensor that packs 21-megapixels into a small 1/2.4-inch design. Sony has long been Apple’s supplier for the camera sensors that go into the iPhone.

交換可能レンズ

もうひとつの興味深い可能性としては交換可能なレンズがある。今年の初めに認可されたアップルの新しい特許によれば、アップルは iPhone の背面カメラにさまざまの小型の単焦点レンズを装着することを検討中であることが分かる。Gruber が「デジタル一眼レフカメラのクオリティ」というのはもしかしてこれと関係があるのではないか？ 来年の iPhone が発表されるまではまだまだ時間があるが、iPhone のカメラがもっとよくなると思うとよだれがたれる・・・

This also brings up another interesting possibility: interchangeable lenses. Earlier this year, a newly granted Apple patent suggested Apple was exploring the possibility of attaching various small, fixed focal-length lens to the iPhone’s rear camera. Could this also be part of what Gruber meant when he said “DSLR quality”? We’re quite a ways away from the next iPhone announcement, but the idea of an even better iPhone camera makes us drool.

２レンズカメラについては Corephotonics が開発したものもあるようだ。

珍しく Gruber 発のウワサだが、来年が “S” の年（大幅なデザイン変更が行なわれる年ではなくスペックアップだけの年）であることを考えると、「カメラの飛躍的改良」は大いにありそうな気がする・・・
