スティーブ・ジョブズの新しい伝記本『Becoming Steve Jobs』が関心を呼んでいる。

出版キャンペーンの一環として Fast Company が内容の一部公開を始めたほか、iTunes でも一部の無料ダウンロードできるようになっている。

発売直前になって NY タイムズも同書を取り上げた。「アップルはジョブズの古い伝記本を批判し、新しい伝記本を賞賛している」と・・・

Through interviews and tweets, Apple brass, including the chief executive, Timothy D. Cook, are throwing their weight behind a new unauthorized biography of the Apple co-founder, “Becoming Steve Jobs,” which goes on sale on Tuesday. In the book, executives take aim at another title, “Steve Jobs” by Walter Isaacson, an authorized biography published shortly after Mr. Jobs’s death in 2011.

このほかにも NY タイムズの記事で Brian X. Chen は、Jony Ive が New Yorker のインタビューで（同書について）「とても好意は持てません」（My regard couldn’t be any lower.）といったことや、先週 Eddy Cue がツイッターで「これまで出た本ではいちばんよく描かれている」（Best portrayal is about to be released — Becoming Steve Jobs (book). Well done and first to get it right.）と褒めたことなどについても触れている。

もちろんアップルの幹部たちが推奨するからといってこの本が売れるとは限らない。『Becoming Steve Jobs』もまた故パイオニアのミステリーを解き明かそうとする無数の試みに加わった本のひとつに過ぎないのだから・・・

発売前にコピーをもらった数人のブロガーやライターも好意的な感想を述べている。John Gruber や Philip Elmer-DeWitt がそうだ。

アップルに今日の成功をもたらした秘密がジョブズがアップルを逐われていた時代にあったことはよく知られているが、公認伝記本ではあまり取り上げられなかった。（その意味では伝記映画『Steve Jobs』も同じではないかと懸念される。）

たしかにアップルの幹部たちが推奨しているという点では異例かもしれないが、これまで陽の当たることの少なかった時代を取り上げることによって、ジョブズの実像に迫る本になるのではないかと期待しているのだが・・・

人間味溢れるスティーブ・ジョブズ

３月２４日に発売される新しいスティーブ・ジョブズの伝記本『Becoming Steve Jobs』の一部が公開されている。

亡くなる一週間前

ティム・クックを CEO にするとジョブズが話した８週間後、容態は急激に悪化へと向かった。「亡くなる一週間前の金曜日、彼といっしょに映画を見ました。『タイタンズを忘れない』［Remember The Titans］を見たのです。弱小フットボールチームを扱った感傷的な映画です。そんな映画を見たいというので驚きました。『よろしいのですか？』と尋ねたくらいです。スティーブはスポーツにはまったく興味がなかったからです。いっしょに映画を見て、いろんなことについて話をしました。今日はとても楽しそうだったと思いながら帰りました。その週末を境に容態は突然悪化したのです。」

Eight weeks after Steve told Cook he was making him CEO, things took a sudden turn for the worse. “I watched a movie with him the Friday before he passed away,” Cook remembers. “We watched Remember the Titans [a sentimental football story about an underdog]. I was so surprised he wanted to watch that movie. I was like, ‘Are you sure?’ Steve was not interested in sports at all. And we watched and we talked about a number of things and I left thinking that he was pretty happy. And then all of a sudden things went to hell that weekend.”

最後まで身近で接していたひとのことばで語られているところが本物だという感じを与える。

血液型が合致したクックが申し出た肝臓提供をジョブズが即座に断ったこと、ある日自宅に呼び出されて後継者の話をされたこと、家族を大切にしたこと、モルヒネで痛みを抑えながら仕事に向かったことなど、身近で接したひとでないと知り得ない様子が描かれている。

ジョブズの理解されていない側面

「彼の人間味溢れる側面はよく理解されていません」とクックはいう。「Walter Isaacson の本は彼に大きな害を及ぼしたと思います。この本はすでに書かれたことの焼き直しで、彼のひととなりについてはほんの少ししか触れていません。スティーブは貪欲で、身勝手なジコチューとして描かれています。彼のひととなりをうまく伝えていません。そこに描かれたような人物だったらこれほど長い間いっしょに仕事をしようなどとは思わなかったでしょう。人生はあまりに短すぎるのです。」

“This picture of him isn’t understood,” says Cook. “I thought the [Walter] Isaacson book did him a tremendous disservice. It was just a rehash of a bunch of stuff that had already been written, and focused on small parts of his personality. You get the feeling that [Steve’s] a greedy, selfish egomaniac. It didn’t capture the person. The person I read about there is somebody I would never have wanted to work with over all this time. Life is too short.

“Steve cared,” Cook continues. “He cared deeply about things. Yes, he was very passionate about things, and he wanted things to be perfect. And that was what was great about him. A lot of people mistook that passion for arrogance. He wasn’t a saint. I’m not saying that. None of us are. But it’s emphatically untrue that he wasn’t a great human being, and that is totally not understood.

新しいジョブズ本『Becoming Steve Jobs』

スティーブ・ジョブズの新しい本が出た。Brent Schlender および Rick Tetzeli 共著の『Becoming Steve Jobs』だ。

めずらしく John Gruber がその書評を書いている。

執筆者にひとを得た

ひとことでいえばこの本は世界が待っていたスティーブ・ジョブズの本だ。ジョブズがいないのにどうしてそんな本が書けるのかといぶかしく思うかもしれない。しかし実のところ彼もちゃんと作業に加わっているのだ。Brent Schlender は WSJ や Fortune の記者だった２５年の間に、仕事で数えきれないほど広範囲にわたってジョブズのインタビューを行なった。1991 年のジョブズとビル・ゲイツの共同インタビューを覚えているだろうか。あれは Schlender の仕事だった。この本を読めば分かるように Schlender とジョブズは非常に親密な関係を築いていた。

It is, in short, the book about Steve Jobs that the world deserves. You might wonder how such a book could be written without Jobs’s participation, but effectively, he did participate. Schlender, in his work as a reporter for The Wall Street Journal and Fortune, interviewed Jobs extensively numerous times spanning 25 years. Remember the 1991 joint interview with Jobs and Bill Gates? That was Schlender. As the book makes clear, Jobs and Schlender had a very personal relationship.

The book is smart, accurate, informative, insightful, and at times, utterly heartbreaking. Schlender and Tetzeli paint a vivid picture of Jobs the man, and also clearly understand the industry in which he worked. They also got an astonishing amount of cooperation from the people who knew Jobs best: colleagues past and present from Apple and Pixar — particularly Tim Cook — and his widow, Laurene Powell Jobs.

不可欠の参考資料

この本は、よく知られたジョブズの生涯とキャリアを改めて正確かつ魅力的に語り直したものだ。もちろん新しい内容も含まれている。あっと驚く話もあるがいまは触れないでといわれている。・・『Becoming Steve Jobs』は今後何十年にもわたって必須不可欠の参考資料となるだろう。

Walter Isaacson のジョブズ伝記本には不満だった John Gruber がたいへん気に入ったようだ。

執筆者にひとを得たこと、情報ソースの質の高さが大きいと思われる。

調べてみたかぎり、書評を書いたのはいまのところ Gruber だけのようだ。

自分の興味を引いたのはタイトル、とくに「いかにして向こう見ずの成り上がり者が明確なビジョンを持つリーダーに進化したか」（The Evolution of a Reckless Upstart into a Visionary Leader）というサブタイトルだ。

ジョブズの成功のカギはアップルを逐われた時代にあったと長年感じてきた。公認伝記本ではあまり取り上げられなかった視点だが、この新しい本はその時代に光をあててジョブズの実像に肉迫してくれるのではないかと期待が持てる。

この『Becoming Steve Jobs』といい、先日の『Jonathan Ive and the Future of Apple』といい、従来のウワサ本、伝説本とは異なる著作物が出始めたことは注目に値する。

ジョブズの伝記映画：生家からバークレーへ

ロス・アルトス（Los Altos）のジョブズの生家で始まったジョブズ伝記映画の次のシーンはバークレー（Berkeley）だ。

1980 年代に見立てたバークレー College Avenue のエスニックカフェでの撮影・・・

College Avenue 2900 番地のブロック一帯（バークレー Elmwood の近辺）は 1980 年代中頃の様子に変貌した。Danny Boyle 監督のジョブズ伝記映画の撮影は La Méditerranée の金曜夜のシーンだ。

The 2900 block of College Avenue in Berkeley’s Elmwood neighborhood was transformed into a mid-1980s scene on Friday night, as director Danny Boyle filmed a scene for a new Steve Jobs biopic at La Méditerranée.

道路には 1980 年代の時代物の車が駐車。プロデューサーは 1980 年代から 1990 年代にマッチする長髪・あご髭の男性や「ナチュラルヘアカラー」女性などのエキストラ募集をかけた。

Period cars from the 1980s were parked on the street, and the producers had put out a casting call for men with long hair and facial hair, and women with “natural hair colors” to match the 1980s to 1990s time period.

映画のスターはジョブズを演じる Michael Fassbender、Steve Wozniak 役の Seth Rogen、John Sculley 役のJeff Daniels、Joanna Hoffman 役の Kate Winslet などだが、集まった物見高い見物人はせいぜい通り過ぎる彼らの姿をチラッと見れたぐらいだった。

脚本家 Aaron Sorkin によれば、この伝記映画には３つの長時間シーン（Macintosh、NeXT、iPod の３つの製品発表）が登場するという。

しかし３つのシーンだけなら、ジョブズ本人のキーノートを見れば済むわけで、そのまま彼が踏襲するとは思えない。

生家のガレージやバークレーでのシーンはどう繋がるのか。

元ガールフレンド Chrisann Brennan や娘 Lisa との葛藤も扱うという。この映画のヒロインは Lisa だと Sorkin 自身がいうからには映画の重要な部分と見なければなるまい。

３つの製品発表が中心だとしても、その間にフラッシュバックでジョブズの人となりや背景を描くシーンが数多挿入されるのではないか。

強烈な Mark Zuckerberg 像を描いてみせた Sorkin が今度はどんなジョブズ像を描くのかたいへん気になる・・・

ジョブズと一緒に LSD をやった

スティーブ・ジョブズとドラッグの関係は、生前はあまり語られなかった。

ジョブズがドロップアウトした大学の寮で同室で、後にインドへの放浪も一緒にした Daniel Kottke が、ジョブズの LSD 体験について口を開いている。

ジョブズと一緒に LSD をやった

Daniel Kottke は最初のアップル社員のひとりだ。まだ有名になる前のスティーブ・ジョブズを友人として知っていた。リード・カレッジ（Reed College）時代はよく一緒に旅をしたものだ。

Kottke was one of Apple’s first employees, and before the world knew Steve Jobs as the creator of Apple, Kottke knew him as a friend he used to trip with at Reed College.

この経験についてはジョブズの生前はあまり語りたがらなかったが、今は進んで CNNMoney に語ってくれた。

He was uncomfortable discussing these experiences while Jobs was alive, but was willing to share them with CNNMoney now.

「私たちはよく幻覚剤をやったものです。まるで新しい世界が開けるのです」と Kottke は語った。

人生で最も重要なこと

オレゴン州ポートランドのリード・カレッジはリベラルな校風で知られていたが、1972 年に同校をドロップアウトした後、ジョブズ氏はカウンターカルチャーな暮らしをした。彼が記者に語ったことがある。LSD をやったことは彼の人生で最も重要な２つないし３つのうちのひとつだと。幻覚剤を試したことのないひとには（ジョブズ夫人も彼をよく知っているひとでも）彼について決して理解できないことがあると語った。

After dropping out of Reed College, a stronghold of liberal thought in Portland, Ore., in 1972, Mr. Jobs led a countercultural lifestyle himself. He told a reporter that taking LSD was one of the two or three most important things he had done in his life. He said there were things about him that people who had not tried psychedelics — even people who knew him well, including his wife — could never understand.

ジョブズのそんな側面について、死後３年半近くたった今になってやっと関係者が口にするようになったのかも。

それにしてもサイケデリックとは懐かしいことばだ。

当時を風靡したサイケデリックアートも、元は幻覚剤の psychedelics からきたものだった。

ジョブズの伝記映画では彼の LSD 体験はどう扱われることになるのだろうか・・・

The movie will reportedly consist of three real-time scenes, each about half an hour long, following Steve Jobs just before a major product announcement, though that may no longer be the case, as we doubt Jobs was hanging out in his garage just before any given keynote.

懐かしのジョニー・アイブ、２０周年記念モデル（TAM）について語る

オリジナル Macintosh を現代風にアレンジしたデザインが先日話題になった。

とても実用的とはいえないが、それでも古くからのマックユーザーは心をくすぐられる。

ことほどさように時代物のマックはオールドファンにとって懐かしい存在だ。

２０周年記念モデルの「TAM」もそんなマックのひとつだ。Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh の略で、アップルが創業２０周年を記念して発売した限定モデルのことだ。

少し前だが、オーストラリアの映像アーチスト Max Piantoni が「TAM」に付属する体験 CD の紹介をしていた。

この珍しい体験 CD（Experience CD）の見所は、若き日の Jony Ive が TAM のプロモーションビデオに登場しているところ。後に iMac の先駆けとなるこのオールインワンのマックについて彼が語っているのだ。［5:45 ごろから］

実はこの２０周年記念限定モデル「TAM」はいわくつきの製品でもあった。

1997 年の Macworld Expo で発表され、２人のスティーブに贈られたものだ。しかしこのときの Gil Amelio のキーノートは「アップル史上最悪かつ最もぶざまな製品発表」といわれた。（キーノートのジョブズの憮然たる表情はなんとも印象的だ。）

まだジョブズがアップルに復帰する前の、Amelio の時代のことだった。

ジョブズがこの TAM を嫌っていたのは有名だ。

アップルに復帰したジョブズがまず最初にやったのは Amelio の机に乗っていた TAM を窓から放り出すことだったという伝説（真偽のほどは分からない）まであるほど。

そんな TAM を Jony Ive がプロモートしているのだから皮肉だ。

その後時を経てこのデザインは現在のオールインワン iMac に結実することになる。

冒頭の Max Piantoni が解説するビデオの他にも、Jony Ive の部分だけを抜き出したものもある。

若き日の Jony Ive（まだ髪もフサフサ）が見れるだけでも貴重だ・・・

「変化したスティーブ」

Fortune：ピクサーとディズニーの関係は波瀾に満ちたものでした。スティーブ・ジョブズが豹変して再度ディズニーとパートナーシップを組もうとしたのは Bob（Robert Iger）の何がそうさせたのでしょうか？

Pixar went on to have a rocky relationship with Disney. What was it about Bob that you think convinced Steve Jobs to change his mind and re-enter the partnership?

Ed Catmull：一般大衆のジョブズ観は間違っていると思います。若き日の「バッドボーイ・スティーブ」［bad boy：不良少年、悪童、反逆児］というジョブズ観です。それがアップルに大きな成功をもたらしたのだと。初期のピクサーは波瀾に富んでいましたが、本当はスティーブが学習して劇的に変わったのです。１５年前に彼はあることに思い至り、その結果彼の人格が変わりました。非常に思いやりが深くなり、ひとびとへの接し方が変わりました。その時点から、彼と共に過ごしたひとは生涯を通じた友となりました。アップルを偉大にしたのは「変化したスティーブ」であり、それまでの彼ではないのです。これは典型的なヒーローの遍歴の物語です。しかしみんなはそのことを知りません。当時スティーブは強固なパートナーシップを信じ、評価していました。彼が Bob を認めたからこそパートナーとなったのです。彼らはお互いに真のパートナーになりました。それが彼が望んだことであり、かねてから考えていたことでした。ディズニーとの関係が５０対５０の関係だから真のパートナーシップになったのではありません。Bob がトップになったとき、一緒に仕事をできるパートナーが現われたと彼は思いました。私たちはそう思いましたし、彼ら自身もお互いにそう思ったのです。

The thing that the general public has missed is that there is a perception of “bad boy Steve” when he was younger and that that behavior led to this giant success at Apple. But while Pixar was going through its rocky beginnings, the reality is that Steve was learning and changing dramatically. About 15 years ago he figured out things and we saw the change in the person. He became very empathetic and changed the way he worked with people. And after that point everybody that was with Steve stayed with him for the rest of his life. It was the changed Steve that made Apple great, not that guy. It’s like the classic hero’s journey, except people didn’t know that. So at that time Steve appreciated and believed in strong partnerships, and what he recognized in Bob is that with Bob he actually had a partner. They both thought of each other as true partners. And that’s what he wanted, it’s what he had previously. Because our 50/50 partnership with Disney wasn’t leading to a true partnership. And when Bob came in, he thought here is a partner I can work with. And that’s what we saw in them and that’s what they saw in each other.

ジョブズの、したがってアップルの成功の秘密がアップルを逐われた時代にあったことは誰もが感じている。

そのことをこれだけはっきり語ったのは Ed Catmull が初めてではないかと思う。

アップル復帰後のジョブズを見ると、「彼と共に過ごしたひとは生涯を通じた友となりました」ということばが重みを持ってくる。

「ジョブズの『失われた』時代」や「『失われたインタビュー』（“Steve Jobs: The Lost Interview）」で感じたことが、共に一時代を過ごしたパートナーの口から語られているのが興味深い・・・
