In the latest episode of The Talk Show, John Gruber mentions that he’s heard “from a birdie of a birdie” that Apple is working on the “biggest camera jump ever” for the next iPhone.
「特に自分が耳にしたのは、来年はカメラが飛躍的な改良を遂げるかもしれないという話だ。それが何を意味するのかはっきりしないが、２つのレンズを備えた変わったシステムで、背面カメラには２つのレンズを使い、画質はデジタル一眼レフカメラ（DSLR）のレベルになると聞いている。」
The specific thing I heard is that next years camera might be the biggest camera jump ever. I don’t even know what sense this makes, but I’ve heard that it’s some kind of weird two-lens system where the back camera uses two lenses and it somehow takes it up into DSLR quality imagery.

ソニーの新しいカメラセンサー
Gruber のコメントが興味深く、もしかしたら本当かもしれないと思わせるのは、今日ソニーが発表した新しいスマートフォンカメラセンサーと関係あるからだ。1/2.4 インチという小さなデザインに 21 メガピクセルを組み込むセンサーだ。これまでずっとソニーはアップルの iPhone カメラセンサーのサプライヤーだった。
What makes Gruber’s comments interesting and possibly true is Sony’s announcement today regarding their new smartphone camera sensor that packs 21-megapixels into a small 1/2.4-inch design. Sony has long been Apple’s supplier for the camera sensors that go into the iPhone.

交換可能レンズ
もうひとつの興味深い可能性としては交換可能なレンズがある。今年の初めに認可されたアップルの新しい特許によれば、アップルは iPhone の背面カメラにさまざまの小型の単焦点レンズを装着することを検討中であることが分かる。Gruber が「デジタル一眼レフカメラのクオリティ」というのはもしかしてこれと関係があるのではないか？ 来年の iPhone が発表されるまではまだまだ時間があるが、iPhone のカメラがもっとよくなると思うとよだれがたれる・・・
This also brings up another interesting possibility: interchangeable lenses. Earlier this year, a newly granted Apple patent suggested Apple was exploring the possibility of attaching various small, fixed focal-length lens to the iPhone’s rear camera. Could this also be part of what Gruber meant when he said “DSLR quality”? We’re quite a ways away from the next iPhone announcement, but the idea of an even better iPhone camera makes us drool.

２レンズカメラについては Corephotonics が開発したものもあるようだ。
珍しく Gruber 発のウワサだが、来年が “S” の年（大幅なデザイン変更が行なわれる年ではなくスペックアップだけの年）であることを考えると、「カメラの飛躍的改良」は大いにありそうな気がする・・・
