スティーブ・ジョブズの新しい伝記本『Becoming Steve Jobs』が関心を呼んでいる。

出版キャンペーンの一環として Fast Company が内容の一部公開を始めたほか、iTunes でも一部の無料ダウンロードできるようになっている。

発売直前になって NY タイムズも同書を取り上げた。「アップルはジョブズの古い伝記本を批判し、新しい伝記本を賞賛している」と・・・

Through interviews and tweets, Apple brass, including the chief executive, Timothy D. Cook, are throwing their weight behind a new unauthorized biography of the Apple co-founder, “Becoming Steve Jobs,” which goes on sale on Tuesday. In the book, executives take aim at another title, “Steve Jobs” by Walter Isaacson, an authorized biography published shortly after Mr. Jobs’s death in 2011.

もちろんアップルの幹部たちが推奨するからといってこの本が売れるとは限らない。『Becoming Steve Jobs』もまた故パイオニアのミステリーを解き明かそうとする無数の試みに加わった本のひとつに過ぎないのだから・・・

発売前にコピーをもらった数人のブロガーやライターも好意的な感想を述べている。John Gruber や Philip Elmer-DeWitt がそうだ。

アップルに今日の成功をもたらした秘密がジョブズがアップルを逐われていた時代にあったことはよく知られているが、公認伝記本ではあまり取り上げられなかった。（その意味では伝記映画『Steve Jobs』も同じではないかと懸念される。）

たしかにアップルの幹部たちが推奨しているという点では異例かもしれないが、これまで陽の当たることの少なかった時代を取り上げることによって、ジョブズの実像に迫る本になるのではないかと期待しているのだが・・・

人間味溢れるスティーブ・ジョブズ

３月２４日に発売される新しいスティーブ・ジョブズの伝記本『Becoming Steve Jobs』の一部が公開されている。

亡くなる一週間前

ティム・クックを CEO にするとジョブズが話した８週間後、容態は急激に悪化へと向かった。「亡くなる一週間前の金曜日、彼といっしょに映画を見ました。『タイタンズを忘れない』［Remember The Titans］を見たのです。弱小フットボールチームを扱った感傷的な映画です。そんな映画を見たいというので驚きました。『よろしいのですか？』と尋ねたくらいです。スティーブはスポーツにはまったく興味がなかったからです。いっしょに映画を見て、いろんなことについて話をしました。今日はとても楽しそうだったと思いながら帰りました。その週末を境に容態は突然悪化したのです。」

Eight weeks after Steve told Cook he was making him CEO, things took a sudden turn for the worse. “I watched a movie with him the Friday before he passed away,” Cook remembers. “We watched Remember the Titans [a sentimental football story about an underdog]. I was so surprised he wanted to watch that movie. I was like, ‘Are you sure?’ Steve was not interested in sports at all. And we watched and we talked about a number of things and I left thinking that he was pretty happy. And then all of a sudden things went to hell that weekend.”

最後まで身近で接していたひとのことばで語られているところが本物だという感じを与える。

血液型が合致したクックが申し出た肝臓提供をジョブズが即座に断ったこと、ある日自宅に呼び出されて後継者の話をされたこと、家族を大切にしたこと、モルヒネで痛みを抑えながら仕事に向かったことなど、身近で接したひとでないと知り得ない様子が描かれている。

“This picture of him isn’t understood,” says Cook. “I thought the [Walter] Isaacson book did him a tremendous disservice. It was just a rehash of a bunch of stuff that had already been written, and focused on small parts of his personality. You get the feeling that [Steve’s] a greedy, selfish egomaniac. It didn’t capture the person. The person I read about there is somebody I would never have wanted to work with over all this time. Life is too short.

“Steve cared,” Cook continues. “He cared deeply about things. Yes, he was very passionate about things, and he wanted things to be perfect. And that was what was great about him. A lot of people mistook that passion for arrogance. He wasn’t a saint. I’m not saying that. None of us are. But it’s emphatically untrue that he wasn’t a great human being, and that is totally not understood.

スティーブ・ジョブズの新しい本が出た。Brent Schlender および Rick Tetzeli 共著の『Becoming Steve Jobs』だ。

めずらしく John Gruber がその書評を書いている。

執筆者にひとを得た

ひとことでいえばこの本は世界が待っていたスティーブ・ジョブズの本だ。ジョブズがいないのにどうしてそんな本が書けるのかといぶかしく思うかもしれない。しかし実のところ彼もちゃんと作業に加わっているのだ。Brent Schlender は WSJ や Fortune の記者だった２５年の間に、仕事で数えきれないほど広範囲にわたってジョブズのインタビューを行なった。1991 年のジョブズとビル・ゲイツの共同インタビューを覚えているだろうか。あれは Schlender の仕事だった。この本を読めば分かるように Schlender とジョブズは非常に親密な関係を築いていた。

It is, in short, the book about Steve Jobs that the world deserves. You might wonder how such a book could be written without Jobs’s participation, but effectively, he did participate. Schlender, in his work as a reporter for The Wall Street Journal and Fortune, interviewed Jobs extensively numerous times spanning 25 years. Remember the 1991 joint interview with Jobs and Bill Gates? That was Schlender. As the book makes clear, Jobs and Schlender had a very personal relationship.

Walter Isaacson のジョブズ伝記本には不満だった John Gruber がたいへん気に入ったようだ。

執筆者にひとを得たこと、情報ソースの質の高さが大きいと思われる。

調べてみたかぎり、書評を書いたのはいまのところ Gruber だけのようだ。

自分の興味を引いたのはタイトル、とくに「いかにして向こう見ずの成り上がり者が明確なビジョンを持つリーダーに進化したか」（The Evolution of a Reckless Upstart into a Visionary Leader）というサブタイトルだ。

ジョブズの成功のカギはアップルを逐われた時代にあったと長年感じてきた。公認伝記本ではあまり取り上げられなかった視点だが、この新しい本はその時代に光をあててジョブズの実像に肉迫してくれるのではないかと期待が持てる。

この『Becoming Steve Jobs』といい、先日の『Jonathan Ive and the Future of Apple』といい、従来のウワサ本、伝説本とは異なる著作物が出始めたことは注目に値する。

所得格差に関するピケティの主張は欧米に対して検証したもので日本経済には当てはまらない

・日本経済の実態は、ピケティのモデルとは異なる｜ダイヤモンド・オンライン

トマ・ピケティは『21世紀の資本』（みすず書房）で、所得格差に関する新しい見方を示した。これまで所得格差は、税制をはじめとする制度的な要因によって大きく影響されると考えられてきたのだが、ピケティは格差拡大のメカニズムは簡単なマクロ経済的関係で説明できるとした。このため、彼の著作は大きな話題を呼んだ。

しかし、彼の所論は、日本の場合には当てはまらない。これを以下に示そう。

When Mr Putin became president he was seen as a pro-Western, economic liberal. He pledged to clamp down on the oligarchs who wielded power in the 1990s, and to restore the role of the state as chief arbiter. Instead, Ms Dawisha writes, he transformed “an oligarchy independent of and more powerful than the state into a corporatist structure in which oligarchs served at the pleasure of state officials, who themselves gained and exercised economic control…both for the state and for themselves.” The result is that 110 individuals control 35% of Russia’s wealth, according to Ms Dawisha.

To some, Cook was a machine; to others, he was riveting. He could strike terror in the hearts of his subordinates, but he could also motivate them to toil from dawn to midnight for just a word of praise.

Apple under Jobs was a roller coaster, but Cook’s operations fief was orderly and disciplined. Cook knew every detail in every step of the operations processes. Weekly operations meetings could last five to six hours as he ground through every single item. His subordinates soon learned to plan for meetings with him as if they were cramming for an exam. Even a small miss of a couple of hundred units was examined closely. “Your numbers,” one planner recalled him saying flatly, “make me want to jump out that window over there.”

Meetings with Cook could be terrifying. He exuded a Zenlike calm and didn’t waste words. “Talk about your numbers. Put your spreadsheet up,” he’d say as he nursed a Mountain Dew. (Some staffers wondered why he wasn’t bouncing off the walls from the caffeine.) When Cook turned the spotlight on someone, he hammered them with questions until he was satisfied. “Why is that?” “What do you mean?” “I don’t understand. Why are you not making it clear?” He was known to ask the same exact question 10 times in a row.

Cook also knew the power of silence. He could do more with a pause than Jobs ever could with an epithet. When someone was unable to answer a question, Cook would sit without a word while people stared at the table and shifted in their seats. The silence would be so intense and uncomfortable that everyone in the room wanted to back away. Unperturbed, Cook didn’t move a finger as he focused his eyes on his squirming target. Sometimes he would take an energy bar from his pocket while he waited for an answer, and the hush would be broken only by the crackling of the wrapper.

Even in Apple’s unrelenting culture, Cook’s meetings stood out as harsh. On one occasion, a manager from another group who was sitting in was shocked to hear Cook tell an underling, “That number is wrong. Get out of here.”

Cook’s quarterly reviews were especially torturous because Cook would grind through the minutiae as he categorized what worked and what didn’t, using yellow Post-its. His managers crossed their fingers in the hopes of emerging unscathed. “We’re safe as long as we’re not at the back of the pack,” they would say to each other.

Cook の苛酷な側面をじつに鮮やかに描写している。

「黙ったまま相手をじっと見つめて不安にさせるクセ」（Yukari Iwatani Kane の同僚の Nick Wingfield）とか「部下をズタズタにする」（Adam Lashinsky）ところはこれまでも取り上げられたことがある。

しかし CEO になってからの彼の様子をみるかぎり、正直いってこういう話には違和感がある。

ゴールドマン・サックスの会議のときや、米議会の公聴会に引っ張りだされたときの様子を見ても、非常に落ちついた対応に終始しているからだ。

まあ、ひとの本質は外見では分からないのかもしれないが・・・

いずれにせよ Cook のエピソードがまたひとつ加わった。

ジョブズが亡くなってからは記事も減り、そのうち WSJ を去った。

Yukari Iwatani Kane がスクープを出すたびに John Gruber が噛みついたものだ。アップル情報の第一人者を任じる彼としてはガマンできなかったのだろう。
