というのも Apple Watch には未発表のポートがあるからだ。Watch の OS に直接アクセスし、診断するのに使われる。いずれはアクセサリーの接続にも使われるかもしれない。

The reason I ask is that the Apple Watch has a port that the company has yet to show off. It’s being used for diagnostics and direct access to the Watch operating system, but it’s feasible that could be used to connect accessories in the future.

真ちゅうの６接点アレイポートで、時計下部のバンドコネクタースロット溝の内部にある。複数のソースがその存在と配置を私に確認してくれた。

The port has a 6-dot brass contact array inside the groove for the ‘bottom’ strap connector slot. Several sources have confirmed its existence and placement to me.

Spring Forward イベント直前なのに Apple Watch のリーク情報がほとんど聞こえてこない。

ゴールドモデルが１万ドル以上するだろうという John Gruber の予想が独り歩きしているぐらいか。

独り歩きといえば、アップルからリークされたと称する Watch の価格リスト［冒頭画像］がおもしろい。Gruber の予想に非常に近い数字になっている。

ポッドキャストで Gruber がその話に触れている。

出所は MacRumors のフォーラム。メンバーの pgiguere1 が投稿したのが始まりだという。

ゴールド Apple Watch にはどれだけの金が必要か？

アップルがアジアのサプライヤーに当初発売分として 500 〜 600 万個の Apple Watch を発注したという WSJ の記事［日本語］はずいぶん話題になった。

なかでも最高級モデルの１８Ｋゴールド Edition の月産量を百万個にするという計画には目を剥いた。

この記事に対する Josh Centers の試算がおもしろい。

試算

WSJ の数字は信じられないほどの大きさだが、ひとまずゴールドモデル Edition の月産量は百万個だと仮定して考えてみよう。

Edition のケースは１８Ｋの純金だ。その金の含有量を Apple Spotlight は 50 〜 75 グラムと試算している。金の計量単位トロイオンス［troy ounce：金衡オンス］でいえばほぼ２トロイオンス（62.2 グラム）になる。（以下単純化して２トロイオンスで考える。）

月産百万個なら年間 2400 万トロイオンス［100 万 x 12 か月 x 2 トロイオンス］の金が必要になる。トン換算すれば 746 トンの金だ。

世界の金供給の３割

ボンド映画 007 の悪漢ですら赤面してしまうほどだ。でもそれっていったいどれくらいの量なのだろう？ 金の年間採掘量は約 2500 トンだ。だから 746 トンってことは世界の金産出量の約３割にあたるのだ。

That’s enough gold to make even a Bond villain blush, but just how much is it? About 2,500 metric tons of gold are mined per year. If Apple uses 746 metric tons every year, we’re talking about 30 percent of the world’s annual gold production.

どこに保管する？

アップルが世界中からリソースを買い付けることは有名だし、現ナマだってたっぷり持っている。それでもアルミニウムとはちがって金は貴金属だ。いまや金本位制ではなくなったけれどそれでも金融制度の担保として各国政府は金を貯め込んでいる。ニューヨーク連邦準備銀行はマンハッタンの金庫室に約 7000 トンの金を保有している。しかしこれとてアップルが時計に変えれば１０年も持たないのだ。

そもそもアップルはそれほどの金をどこに保管しようというのか。まさか新キャンパスの円の中心に隠し金庫があるわけじゃあるまい？ もちろんそれだけの量が一時的に必要というわけではないが、１オンス 1200 ドルで換算すると年間 288 億ドル［約３兆５千億円］分もの金が必要になる。サプライチェーンの途中で製品が消えてしまうことを考えると、これは尻込みしたくなるほどの悪夢だ。さらには 007 の悪の秘密結社スペクターだって狙うだろう。

一方高級腕時計メーカーのロレックスの年間売上げは「たったの」 47 億ドル（60 万個相当）だ。

結論はどちらかだ

あちこちから拾ったデータから得られる結論は２つのうちのどちらかだ。まずひとつは、アップルが世界を征服しようとしているという結論。アップルは地球上でもっとも価値のある会社だが、それに止まらず世界の金供給の３分の１を手にしようとしており、金価格に大混乱を引き起こし、世界経済にも計り知れない影響を与えようとしていると・・・

There are two conclusions we can draw from this scattering of data. The first is that Apple is about to take over the world. Not only will it be the most valuable company on the planet, but it will also be bidding for a third of the world’s annual gold supply, wreaking havoc on gold prices and doing who knows what to the global economy.

あるいはもうひとつは、かの尊敬すべき WSJ 紙の Apple Watch Edition 売上げ計画量が一桁（あるいはそれ以上）間違っているという結論だ。だとすると毎月 10 万個という数字になるが、それでもその方がもっともらしい。

The alternative is that the esteemed Wall Street Journal is off on its Apple Watch Edition sales by an order of magnitude (or more). That would put the number at 100,000 per month, which seems more plausible.

Apple Watch は単なるテクノガジェットではない。ファンションアイテムでもあるのだ。

Apple Watch isn’t just a techie gadget. It’s a fashion item.

そのことをみんなの頭に叩き込もうと、アップルはパリの高級デパート「ギャラリー・ラファイエットのオスマン大通り本店」 （Galeries Lafayette Haussmann）で特別展示用のブースを準備しているようだ。

To drill that point into everyone’s heads during launch, it looks like Apple is setting up a special booth at one of the fanciest high-end department stores in Paris: Galeries Lafayette Haussmann.

ギャラリー・ラファイエットでは数週間前から特別ブースの工事が始まっていると Mac4Ever が伝えている。Apple Watch のためだという公式の話はないが、タイミングといい、場所柄といい、すべてはアップルを指し示しているように思われる。

Construction on a special booth at Galeries Lafayette began a few weeks ago, according to Mac4Ever. There’s no official word that the structure is for the Apple Watch, but the timing, location and large white walls all point to Apple.

ギャラリー・ラファイエットの２階フロアに Apple Watch の展示スタンドが設けられるようだが、今は防水シートで隠されている。Mac4Ever の記事によれば、ほかの店でも同様なブティックを準備中らしい。ディスプレイやスタンドの準備には Angela Ahrendts が陣頭指揮をとっているのだろう。

The secret Apple Watch stand is located on the second floor of Galeries Lafayette but is concealed beneath tarps. According to the report, Apple may set up similar boutiques at other stores. Angela Ahrendts supposedly dictated all of the organization of the displays and stands herself.

Apple Watch の発売日はまだ未定だ。直近の決算発表で Tim Cook は４月に出荷されると語った。４月末までの意味だと思われるが、もし特別展示スタンドを準備中ということなら発表は４月の初めに近いのかもしれない。

It’s still unclear when Apple’s wearable will actually go on sale. Tim Cook stated during Apple’s most recent earnings call that Apple Watch would ship in April. We assume he meant toward the end of the month, but if they’re already working on special stands, the launch may be closer to beginning of the month.

１２インチ MacBook Air のウワサをどう考えるか

プロトタイプに基づいたウワサ

Mark Gurman のスクープは各方面の注目を浴びている。しかしこれはあくまでプロトタイプに基づくウワサに過ぎない。Serenity Caldwell のコメントがそんな気持ちを代弁しているようだ。

まずハッキリさせておきたいのは Gurman の記事とモックアップは内部のプロトタイプに基づいた情報だ。だから次期 MacBook Air はこれとはまったく違ったものになる可能性だってある。しかしもし正しければ、・・・これは間違いなく興味深い情報だ。

Now, before I go any further, I’m going to note that Gurman wrote and mocked up the machine based on an internal prototype, so it’s entirely possible that Apple’s next MacBook Air will look nothing like this. But if it did, well… it’d sure be an interesting […].

そんな中で Gurman のスクープを取り上げた ATP（Accidental Tech Podcast）のギークたちの視点がとても興味深い。［１時間 20 分頃から］

そんなことをアップルがやるだろうか

Marco Arment が「もし本当なら１２インチ MacBook Air の話はおもしろい。但し書き付きのビッグ if だが・・・」と話しだすと、John Siracusa が「本当かどうかなんてどうでもいいことだ。問題はそんなことをアップルがやるだろうかという点だ。そしてそんなものをキミは欲しいと思うだろうかという点なのだ」と切り返す。

Siracusa のことばを聞いたとき、ああこれだなと妙に納得するものがあった。

ウワサの真偽より、果たしてアップルがそんなことをするだろうかという Siracusa の視点には改めてはっとさせられる。「アップルの哲学的メッセージ」（Philosophical message of Apple）は果たしてそうかという言い方を彼はする。

このあと Siracusa がリードする形で３人のギークの議論が進行する。まずそんなことが技術的に可能なのか、可能だとして果たしてアップルがそんなことをするだろうか、そして最後にキミはそんなものを欲しいと思うのかと・・・

シングルポートの問題が議論の中心となるが、それ以外にも様々な問題がカバーされる。

Siracusa は MagSafe がなくなる点を疑問視する。「コードを引っ掛けてラップトップを壊す可能性のあった MagSafe のない時代になんか戻りたくない。」 また USB Type-C ポートがひとつだけという点も哲学的メッセージとしておかしいと。もしこんな製品が出たら自分は様子見だと彼はいう。

外出時の使用という観点から Marco Arment はバッテリーの持続時間を問題にする。薄さにこだわるあまりバッテリーにしわ寄せがいっているのではないかと。

これはひょっとして ARM 搭載マックではないかという Casey Liss の指摘も興味深い。これは残りの２人から否定されるけれども・・・

果たしてアップルがそんなことをするだろうかという視点は他のギークにも共通している。

John Gruber がスクープの問題点をひとつずつ潰しているのもそういう点から考えれば十分納得できる。

Jason Snell にいたってはもっとハッキリしている。「アップルがそんなラップトップを出したりするだろうか？・・・ アップルならきっとそうするに違いない」と。

ギークがウワサ話をどう捉えるかという意味で ATP のポッドキャストはとても興味深い。

ウワサが本当かどうかはたいして重要ではない。大切なのはアップルが果たしてそんなことをするだろうかという視点だ。そんな視点の欠けたウワサ話は飛びつくに値しない。そんな話を取り上げる先陣争いにも意味はない。

Mark Gurman のスクープという意味だけでなく、ギークの考え方を知るという点でも ATP のポッドキャストは一見（一聴）の価値がある。

これだけ反響を呼んだスクープなので、Gurman が続報を書くのは間違いなさそうだ・・・

究極のラップトップ

Mark Gurman のスクープは多くのギークを刺激した。

自分にとって究極のマシンを追い求める MG Siegler が、Kit Eaton のコメントを引用してさらに付言している。

どこまでも削ぎ落したあとに残るものは

もし Mark Gurman のスクープが正しければ（彼の実績からみて信じない理由はないのだが）、究極のマシンもいよいよ近づいた感じだ。これがどうしてラップトップの頂点に立つマシンであるか Kit Eaton がうまくまとめている。

And, if a scoop by Mark Gurman is to be believed (and there’s no reason to believe it shouldn’t be, given his track record), such a machine nears. Kit Eaton did a nice job breaking down why this machine may very well be the pinnacle of laptops. A few points stand out:

このマシンでアップルが何処へ行こうとしているか分かるだろうか？ 新しい Air は基本的にはスクリーンとキーボードとポインティング・デバイスを可能なかぎり小さくてエレガントなスペースに詰め込んだものだ。それ以外の何ものでもない。

With this new machine, Apple will have essentially whittled down the MacBook to just the absolute fundamentals of a laptop. Any further reduction and you no longer have a laptop, you have a tablet.

No, what I mean is the next Air is the “full stop” at the end of the laptop story, a story that Apple itself had significant roles in shaping thanks to other, earlier innovations and clever design decisions in older laptops it made.

もし次期 Air が 9to5Mac の言うとおり本当なら、ラップトップに残された途はほぼなくなる。これは究極のクラムシェル型ラップトップだ。不必要なすべてを取り去り、アップルデザインに対する自信と生気をもたらす究極のラップトップだ。タッチスクリーンであれ取り外し可能なキーボードであれ、いかなるイノベーションも、「ラップトップ」の領域を越えて、ラップトップとタブレットのハイブリッドの領域に踏み込むことになるからだ。

If the next Air really is going to be as claimed by 9to5Mac, there is legitimately almost no direction left for the laptop to be taken in. It is the ultimate clamshell laptop, shorn of everything unnecessary and served up with Apple’s traditional design confidence and verve. Any other innovations, including touchscreens or detachable keyboards move beyond what we know of as a “laptop” and step into hybrid tablet/laptop territory.

この新しい MacBook は私にとっても最後のラップトップになりそうだ。すぐにも MacBook がなくなるといっているのではない。ラップトップとしては頂点に立つ製品と考えるのだ。スペックは今後何年にもわたって改良され続けるだろう。しかし長い目で見れば、今後長い時間をかけてゆっくり消えていくのだ。ちょうど iPod がそうだったように・・・

I suspect this new MacBook will be the last laptop I end up buying. Again, that doesn’t mean the MacBook is dying anytime soon, but I believe this will be the pinnacle of the product. We’ll get spec bumps for years to come. But it will be the long, slow fade we just witnessed with the iPod.

まずは Mark Gurman のスクープ記事の内容から・・・

いつもなら直ちに「小ちゃな小鳥ちゃん」から仕入れたネタで切り返す Gruber だが、今回は不意打ちを食ったようだ。

すごいスクープ

もし本当なら Mark Gurman のすごいスクープだ。変更点は多々あるが、ポートが２つだけ（ヘッドホンと USB Type-C ポート）というところが特出している。外部ディスプレイにも、電源にも、周辺機器にもこの USB ポートひとつで接続する。（MagSafe、Thunderbolt、それに USB 3 を落としたのはよく分かるが、USB Type-C ポートがひとつだけというのは解せない。最低２つは必要じゃないか？）

Hell of a scoop by Mark Gurman, if true. Numerous interesting changes, most especially that the claim that it has just two ports: one for headphones and a lone USB Type-C port that would be used for everything from connecting an external display, power, and connecting peripherals. (I can totally see Apple dropping MagSafe, Thunderbolt, and USB 3 ports — but I don’t get why they would include only one USB Type-C port. Why not two?)

他に気に入った変更点：左右矢印キーを普通サイズのキーにしたこと。高さが半分サイズのキーなんて理解し難かった。

Another detail I like: the full-height keys for left and right arrow. Making those keys half-height never made sense to me.

グルマンの記事から「Retina」ということばが欠けている点が特に目立つ。

Retina かどうか

もし Gurman のいうようにポートがひとつだけ（新しい USB Type-C）というのは奇妙だが、でもそれほど薄くなるというのなら、その価値はありそうだ。

If the thing really does only have one port (a new, USB Type-C), as Gurman notes, that would be odd, but if it really that thin, worth it, in my opinion.

それより「高解像度のディスプレイ」の方が気になる。それって Retina のことだと考えたい。そう思わない連中が多いようだが・・・

More important to me is the “higher-resolution display”. I assumed that meant Retina, but others aren’t so sure.

これまでの MacBook Air の軌跡を考えてみよう。2008 年に登場したときのデザインはクレージーそのものだった。正気とは思えないほど薄くかつ軽くするために、これまでラップトップの標準的機能と考えられてきた数々のものを投げ棄てたのだ。自分がオリジナル MacBook Air のレビューを書いたとき、「妥協」ということばを１０回も使ったほどだ。

Meanwhile, consider the trajectory of the MacBook Air. When it was released in 2008, it was a crazy design. It threw away a huge number of what we considered to be standard laptop features in order to be insanely thin and light. In my review of the original Air for Macworld, I used the word “compromise” ten times.

No optical drive. An incredibly slow processor, compared to all other Macs. A teeny-tiny 80GB hard drive (or an even tinier 64GB SSD for $999 more!). A single USB port. And, to top it all off, a price that started at $1799.

もし Gurman の記事が正しければ、この新しいモデルは MacBook Air ラインを MacBook Pro ラインから引き離すものだ。事実これは MacBook Air をそのルーツに戻すものだ。従来のコンピュータデザインの枠を踏み外しているため最初はクレージーに思えても、形式上必要とされるスペックなんかどうでもいいターゲットユーザーにはアピールするに違いない、そんな選択肢に溢れた製品としてのルーツに戻すのだ。

If Gurman’s reports are accurate, this new model pulls the MacBook Air line away from the MacBook Pro. In fact, it returns the MacBook Air to its roots—as a product full of choices that we consider crazy at first, because they’re out of step with conventional computer design, but that will appeal to a target audience that doesn’t actually care about those de rigueur features.

いいかえれば、そんなラップトップをアップルは出したりするだろうか？ 専用の電源ケーブルも持たず、従来のたくさんのポートを捨て去り、未だかつて使用したことのないコネクターで電源や接続を行なう、そんなラップトップを薄くて軽いものを作るというためだけに出したりするだろうか？ アップルならきっとそうするに違いない。

In other words, would Apple release a laptop with no dedicated power cable, ditch a bunch of traditional ports, and funnel every bit of power and wired connectivity through a connector that it has never before used, all in the name of creating a thinner and lighter laptop? Are you kidding? Of course it would.
