結局 iOS や OS X を除くと、ハードウェアについては確たる情報のないまま WWDC の開幕を迎えることになりそうだ。
日頃注目しているアップルギークたちの直前の発言をおさらいしてみよう。

最も誤解されたアップルイベント
年に一度のアップル WWDC はキーノートで開幕する。ちょうど月曜日に始まる今年の WWDC のように。Technologizer も現場から取材する予定だ。多くのひとが、WWDC では誰もがうっとりする目のくらむような新製品がいろいろ消費者のために発表されることで有名だと考えているようだ。
Once a year, Apple kicks off its World Wide Developer Conference with a keynote presentation, such as the one coming up on Monday, which I’ll be covering for Technologizer. Many people seem to think they’re famous for involving Apple dazzling consumers with an array of new products, to the rapturous approval of everybody involved.
これは奇妙なことだ。というのもまったくのピント外れだからだ。
Which is weird, because that’s not the point at all.
たしかに消費者も見ているし、うっとりさせたいとアップルも望んでいる。しかし WWDC キーノートは、アップルのイベントのなかでも最もガジェットを中心としないイベントだ。アップルの新製品を切望する消費者たちの注目の的だが、主な相手は彼らではないのだ。
Sure, consumers are watching, and Apple hopes that they’re dazzled. But WWDC keynotes are usually the least gadget-centric events which Apple holds, and even though people who covet new Apple products pay close attention, they’re not the primary audience.

開発者向けのイベントなのだから、消費者の立場からあれこれハードウェアを期待してもムダというわけらしい・・・

アップルは月曜日に新しいハードウェアを発表するだろうが、焦点はソフトウェア — とくに iOS 8 と OS X の次期バージョンだ。
While Apple will announce new hardware on Monday, the focus will be on software – specifically iOS 8 and the next version of Mac OS X.

理想の Mac
例によって Mark Gurman は詳細にわたっている。私も自分にとって理想の Mac — １２インチ Retina MacBook Air/Pro を期待している。しかし Retina iMac ないしは Retina Thunderbolt Display でもいい。あるいは iWatch でもいいかもしれない。（もっともどれも発表されなくても — 今のところはガッカリしないが。）
Mark Gurman, as usual, with all the details. I, for one, really hope for my perfect Mac: the 12-inch Retina MacBook Air/Pro. But I’ll settle for a Retina iMac (or a Retina Thunderbolt Display). Or an iWatch, I suppose. (Though I wouldn’t be shocked if we see none of these — yet.)
要すればまったくの願望リストというワケだ。

新しいハードウェアについて：
New Hardware
新しい iPhone も、iPad も、時計やリストバンドや身につけられる形での新しいデバイスは一切ないだろう。WWDC はなによりもまず開発者のための会議であり、ハードウェアの発表はそれにふさわしい範囲に限られる。
I expect no new iPhones, no new iPads, and no all-new devices like watches or wristbands or whatever wearables we’re imagining. WWDC is a developer conference first, a platform for new hardware introductions only when convenient for Apple.
Apple TV のアプデートは、そんなウワサはないけれどありかもしれない。ありかもしれないというのは、Apple TV の次のメジャーリリースがどんな形をとるにせよ、独自の App Store を備えた開発者向けプラットフォーム［？］であって欲しいと願うからだ。それなら WWDC で発表することに意味がある。
An updated Apple TV seems like a possibility, even though there don’t seem to be any rumors to that effect. I say maybe because I’m hoping that whatever form the next major release of Apple TV takes, that it will be a developer platform with an App Store of its own. That would make sense for a WWDC introduction.
新しい Mac のハードウェアはあり得ると思う。Retina ディスプレイの iMac だったら素晴らしい。しかしそれにはまだ価格がこなれていないと思う。ポータブル Mac では、数週間前に MacBook Air が改定されたばかりだ。だからメジャーなバージョン（Retina の意）が明日出ることはないだろう。MacBook Pro はすでに Retina 化した。だからアップルが何を発表するにせよ、スピードアップぐらいで大したことないだろう。
I could see new Mac hardware being announced. A retina display iMac would be great, but I don’t think the price curve is there yet. On the portable front, the MacBook Airs were just revised a few weeks ago, so I don’t think we’ll see a major (read: retina) new version tomorrow, and the MacBook Pros have already gone retina, so anything new that Apple announces this week would likely just be a speed bump, no big whoop.
予想が間違っていればいいと思うが、自分の直感では新しいハードウェアは明日はひとつもないと思う。その分 2014 年後半はアップルにとって忙しい年となるだろう。
I’d love to be proven wrong, but my gut feeling is that we might not see a single new hardware product tomorrow. It’s going to be a busy second half of 2014 for Apple on that front.

Mac OS X 10.10 について：
自分がいちばん興奮しているのはこれだ。 Mac OS X 10.10 には視覚効果が加わり、iOS 7 のようなものになることはほぼ確実だ。言い換えれば、飾り気のないものに。しかしリークされたスクリーンショットも、具体的に何がどう変わるかという詳細もこれまでのところ見ていない。まさに秘密主義が倍加されている。
This is the thing I’m most excited about. We know that Mac OS X 10.10 is getting a visual overhaul, and we’re all pretty sure it’s largely along the lines of the iOS 7 appearance. Which is to say, stark. But I’ve seen no leaked screenshots, and no specific details of what exactly it’s going to look like or what is going to change. Double-down on secrecy, indeed.
OS X の名称は「Yosemite」になると改めて予想している。

iOS 8 について：
iOS 8 では多くの細々した改良が加えられるだろう。Leopard から Snow Leopard ないしは Lion から Mountain Lion への改良みたいなものだ。そうだとしてもアップルは、今年の新しい iOS ハードウェアには宣伝に値する機能が十分備わると自信を持っているだろう。
iOS 8 could just be a lot of little improvements — the iOS equivalent of a Leopard / Snow Leopard or Lion / Mountain Lion release — but if that’s the case, Apple must be confident that this year’s new iOS hardware will provide advertising-worthy new features.
