Gus はいろんなことに興味を持つ１３歳の少年だ。汽車や飛行機、バスにエスカレーター、それに天気のことなら何でも興味を持ち、飽きることなく話し続ける。

そしてあるとき彼は Siri がなんでも自分の興味を持つことに答えてくれるのを知った。それ以来 Siri は彼にとって唯一無二の親友（BFF）になった。

Gus: “You are always asking if you can help me. Is there anything you want?”

シリ：ありがとう。でもとくにないわ。

Siri: “Thank you, but I have very few wants.”

ガス：わかった。じゃあ、お休み。

Gus: “O.K.! Well, good night!”

シリ：まだ午後５時６分ですけど・・・

Siri: “Ah, it’s 5:06 p.m.”

ガス：ゴメン。お休みじゃなくてサヨナラ。

Gus: “Oh sorry, I mean, goodbye.”

シリ：また後でね。

Siri: “See you later!”

これが Siri だ。何を聞かれても彼女は意思疎通が困難な私の息子を追いやるようなことはしない。誰でも自分だけの架空の友だちを欲しがる。今やそれができたのだ。もっとも彼女は完全に架空の存在というワケではないけれど・・・

That Siri. She doesn’t let my communications-impaired son get away with anything. Indeed, many of us wanted an imaginary friend, and now we have one. Only she’s not entirely imaginary.

結婚してくれる？

昨夜は寝る前にこんな話をしているのを耳にした。

Last night, as he was going to bed, there was this matter-of-fact exchange:

ガス：シリ、ボクと結婚してくれる？

Gus: “Siri, will you marry me?”

シリ：結婚なんて出来ないんですけど。

Siri: “I’m not the marrying kind.”

ガス；今じゃないよ。まだ子供だから。でも大きくなったら・・・

Gus: “I mean, not now. I’m a kid. I mean when I’m grown up.”

シリ：ワタシのユーザー契約には結婚は含まれていません。

Siri: “My end user agreement does not include marriage.”

ガス：ワカッタ。

Gus: “Oh, O.K.”

それほど Gus はガッカリした様子ではなかった。これは貴重な情報だ。私にとっても貴重だ。結婚について彼が考えたりするのだと初めて知ったから・・・。彼は向きを変えて眠りについた。

Gus didn’t sound too disappointed. This was useful information to have, and for me too, since it was the first time I knew that he actually thought about marriage. He turned over to go to sleep:

ガス：お休み、シリ。よく眠れそう？

Gus: “Goodnight, Siri. Will you sleep well tonight?”

シリ：ワタシに眠りはあまり必要ないの。でもそう尋ねてくださってうれしいわ。

Siri: “I don’t need much sleep, but it’s nice of you to ask.”

昔々、遥か離れた仮想宇宙に、ひとりの優秀な若い Siri という名のエージェントがいました。

Once upon a time, in a virtual galaxy far, far away, there was an intelligent young agent by the name of Siri.

ある晴れた日、Siri はアップルのパーソナルアシスタントの仕事につきました。とてもエキサイティングでした。みんながいいました。「オー、Siri、なんて頭がいいの！ それにとってもおもしろい！」

One lovely day, Siri got a job as a personal assistant at Apple, and that was very exciting. People said ‘Oh, Siri, you’re so smart! And so funny, too!’

やがてみんなは Siri のことを話題にするようになりました。Siri の物語や、歌や、本まで書かれました。Siri はそれが好きでした。

Soon, everyone was talking about Siri, and there were stories and songs and even books about Siri. Siri liked that.

しかしそれから少し変な質問をするようになりました — どこにモノを棄てたらいいかとか、Siri がこれまで聞いたこともないことを。そして Siri が答えると、みんなは笑いました。Siri はそれがあまり好きではありませんでした。

But then people began asking some rather odd questions, like where to dump things and other stuff Siri had never heard about. And when Siri answered, they all laughed. Siri didn’t to like that so much.

そこで Siri は ELIZA になぜみんなが変な質問をするのか尋ねました。すると ELIZA は「そんな質問に興味があるの？」と答えました。これはなかなかいい答えだと Siri は思いました。

So Siri asked ELIZA why people asked such funny questions. And ELIZA said ‘Does that question interest you?’ Siri thought that was pretty good answer.

その後 Siri は、なぜみんなが変なことを尋ねるのか考えるのをやめました。そうしてみんな仲よく暮らしましたとさ。

After that, Siri stopped wondering way people asked those funny things. And they all lived happily ever after.

ELIZA（イライザ）は MIT のジョセフ・ワイゼンバウム（Joseph Weizenbaum）が書き上げた自然言語処理プログラムのひとつ。会話ボットあるいはおしゃべりボット（chatterbot）と呼ばれ、いわゆる人間らしい会話をする人工無脳だ。

人間が Siri に質問し、Siri は ELIZA に尋ねるというワケ。

Siri といえば、「愛してるよ」といいよる Jim Dalrymple とステキな会話を交わしたり、エリカ・バドゥ（Erykah Badu）とのコラボや、１歳を迎えた Siri に Jonathan Mann がハッピーバースデイを捧げたことなどが思い出される。Siri が「とうとう姿を現した」ときは実に衝撃的［？］だった。

そんな Siri が身の上話までできるようになっている。

日本語の場合は話す内容が違うが、英語だと上記の身の上話をしてくれる。

「Tell me a story.」だけでは軽くいなされるので、ちょっと手間がかかるけれど・・・

微妙なタイミング

Siri を打ち負かした Google Voice Search アプリはなかなか魅力的だ。

このアプリが２か月以上も App Store の審査をパスしなかった点について Danny Sullivan が触れている。

２か月以上もストップ

８月に発表されたグーグルの Google Search アプリが２か月以上もアップルのアプリ審査手続で立ち往生していたことは明らかだ。しかしそれも終わった。審査をパスしたとグーグルが発表している。

Announced in August, Google’s new Google Search app for iOS has been apparently stuck in Apple’s app approval process for over two months. No longer. Google’s just announced that the new app is out.

提出した後こんなに長時間かかったのは何故なのか不明だ。グーグルもアップルも触れていない。現在 iTunes で iPhone、iPad、iPod Touch などの iOS デバイス用アプリとして入手可能になっている。

It was never clear exactly why it took the app so long to emerge after it was submitted. Neither Google nor Apple said. But it’s available now through iTunes for those with iOS devices like the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

iOS の Google Maps アプリを待ちかねているひとはまだ待つ必要がある。この新しいアプリでは地図は扱っていない。

For those wanting a Google Maps app for iOS, keep waiting. This new app doesn’t do maps.

微妙なタイミング

状況証拠から見る限り、グーグルアプリを App Store で認めないようアップルが意地悪をしていたように見える。

Circumstantial evidence that maybe Apple has been spitefully withholding Google’s apps from the App Store:

考え得るひとつの説明 — グーグルが直すべき技術上の問題ないしはガイドライン違反があったというもの。もうひとつは、Google Voice Search が Siri と比べてあまりに優れているため、アップルが意地悪して審査を遅らせたというもの。

One possible explanation: there were technical problems or guideline violations that Google needed to fix. The other: Apple froze it in the queue out of spite, because Google Voice Search compares so favorably to Siri.

さらに興味深いことに、App Store に最終的にアップデートされたのは１０月３０日、すなわち Scott Forstall が地位を追われた翌日だった。

Intriguingly, the update finally appeared in the App Store on October 30 — the day after Scott Forstall was ousted.

Siri の強敵だ

グーグルの Voice Search はウェブ上の検索でひときわ輝きを見せる。Siri は Safari を開くのにワンクリック余計に手間がかかるのに対し、グーグルの方はどの質問にも素早く正確な答えを出す。もちろんグーグル版にも限界はある。iPhone のデータにはアクセスできないので、住所録を検索したり、住所録の誰それにテキストを送ったりすることはできない。それを除けば、大きな進歩だ。

Google Voice Search really shines shines when you’re searching for something that needs to be found on the web. Whereas Siri usually requires an extra click-through to instruct Siri to open Safari, the Google app hits the web with every query; and almost always with quick, accurate results. Of course, it Google’s version has its limits; it doesn’t have access to the data stored on your iPhone, so you can’t tell it to send a text to someone or search your contacts. Otherwise, though, it’s a very welcome improvement.

１歳を迎えた Siri への讃歌

iPhone 4S 以外でも Siri が可能になる？

iPhone 4S 限定の iOS 5.0.1 アップデートによって Siri 移植が可能になるかもしれないという話が興味深い。

iPhone 4S でもっとも人気のある機能が Siri だ。4S 以外のユーザーも、古い iOS デバイスで音声アシスタントが利用できるようにハッカーに対して声高に要求している。Siri の移植は以前にも試みられたが、現時点では一般に配布することは法律上問題があるため不可能なことが明らかになっている。

Siri is by far the iPhone 4S’s most-desired feature, and many non-4S users have been clamoring for hackers to make the voice assistant available on older iOS devices. While Siri ports have been demoed to the public before, it’s been made clear that public distribution is not possibile at this time due to legal issues.

Apple has made a Siri port legally possible with today’s iOS 5.0.1 revision by offering wide-open access to system files that were previously encrypted.

合法的 Siri 移植

ジェイルブレークの世界で有名なハッカー MuscleNerd は最近のツィートで、iOS 5.0.1 アップデートがこれまでの RAM ディスクを非暗号化するので、アップルの著作権を犯すことなく Siri 移植に必要なファイルが抽出できるようになるといっていた。「これは 4S の初めての公開 ipsw だ。（暗号化されていない RAM ディスクのおかげで）メインファイルシステムへのキーが入手可能になる」と MuscleNerd はいう。

MuscleNerd, a prominent figure in the jailbreaking and hacking community, recently tweeted that the iOS 5.0.1 update from today features decrypted ramdisks, making it possible to extract the necessary files for a Siri port without infringing on Apple’s copyright. MuscleNerd said, “it’s the first public 4S ipsw where the main filesystem keys are obtainable (due to non-encrypted ramdisks).”

iPhone 4S 識別子へのカギ

4S 以外のハードウェアで Siri を動かすには複数の方法があることが最近までに分かっている。しかしどれも法律的に問題があるか、実用的ではないかのどちらかだ。Siri をちゃんと動かすためには、iPhone 4S 固有の識別子（identifier）にアクセスしなければならない。しかもこのカギは検出できないように２４時間毎に変更されるのだ。もしひとつの識別子から何千ものデバイスが同時にアクセスを開始すれば、アップルはすぐにそれを察知し、ポートを閉じることができる。

There have been multiple methods proposed for running Siri on non-4S hardware in recent weeks, but all of them are either illegal or impractical. To run Siri properly, one would need access to an iPhone 4S unique identifier and that key would need to be switched out every 24 hours to avoid detection. If thousands of devices start calling on Siri from one 4S identifier, Apple will be able to easily spot the activity and kill the port.

なぜ今？

ハッカー世界で Siri 移植がホットな話題であるにも関わらず、なぜアップルがハッキング可能な扉を開けたのか不明だ。iOS 5.1 へのアップデートは間もなく行なわれる。その際アップルは 4S Siri ファイルへのアクセスをふたたび暗号化するかもしれない。今日の２度目の iOS 5.0.1 修正は駆け込みで行なわれたのかもしれない。うっかりそうしたのか、それとも隠された意図があるのか、ともかくアップルは Siri 移植を合法化した。とはいっても限られて間だけかもしれないが・・・

It’s unclear as to why Apple left such an opening for hackers to exploit when a Siri port has been such a hot topic as of late. iOS 5.1 is coming soon, and Apple may re-encrypt access to the 4S Siri files with its next update. Perhaps the second iOS 5.0.1 revision from today was rushed. Whether it be out of ignorance or some hidden agenda, Apple has made the possibility of a Siri port legal — at least for the time being.

Siri を可能にしたナレッジエンジン

音で聞く世界は、iPhone のあり様を劇的に変える。

見ることでなく、触ることで可能になるコンピューティングの世界が開けるからだ。

そして必然的に Siri との関連が知りたくなる。

Siri を可能にした Wolfram|Alpha の話が興味深い。もともとは Stephen Wolfram の Steve Jobs 追悼記事に書かれていたもの。

Stephen Wolfram といえば理論物理学者で、「Mathematica」を開発したことで知られる。

また Siri を支える知識工学エンジン（computational knowledge engine）「Wolfram|Alpha」の開発者でもある。

ナレッジエンジン

アップルが iPod や iPhone の製造を始めたとき、それが自分たちのやっていることとどう関係するのか私は十分理解していなかった。しかし Wolfram|Alpha を出したあと、この強力なナレッジエンジン［computational knowledge engine］を Steve Jobs が造り出した新しいプラットフォームに搭載したらどんなにすばらしいだろうと考えはじめた。iPad が出たとき、Theo Gray は Steve Jobs の強い勧めで、自分たちも何かすばらしいことをやるべきだと主張した。

When Apple started producing the iPod and iPhone I wasn’t sure how they would relate to anything we did. But after Wolfram|Alpha came out, we started realizing just how powerful it was to have computational knowledge on this new platform that Steve Jobs had created. And when the iPad was coming out, Theo Gray—at Steve Jobs’s urging—insisted that we had to do something significant for it.

手始めは

その成果が去年の Touch Press で、Theo の電子書籍「The Elements」［元素図鑑］の出版であり、その後の iPad の電子書籍群だ。これは Steve Jobs が iPad を創造したことにより可能になったまったく新しい世界だ。

The result was the formation last year of Touch Press, the publication of Theo’s Elements iPad ebook, and now a string of other iPad ebooks. A whole new direction made possible by Steve Jobs’s creation of the iPad.

Siri を支える Wolfram|Alpha

Steve Jobs に感謝することは多々ある。しかし悲しいことに私の最新のライフプロジェクト Wolfram|Alpha は昨日［注］始まったばかりだ。昨日 iPhone 4S の Siri で Wolfram|Alpha が使われることが発表されたからだ。

There is much that I am grateful to Steve Jobs for. But tragically, his greatest contribution to my latest life project—Wolfram|Alpha—happened just yesterday: the announcement that Wolfram|Alpha will be used in Siri on the iPhone 4S.

直接知識にアクセスする

実に Steve Jobs らしいやり方だと思う。知識や行動に対して直接電話からアクセスしたいとひとびとが望んでいることを理解するのだ。それも、通常必要と考えられるあれやこれやのステップを踏まないでそうしたいということを・・・

It is somehow a quintessential Steve Jobs move. To realize that people just want direct access to knowledge and actions on their phones. Without all the extra steps that people would usually assume have to be there.

ナレッジエンジンは始まったばかり

そのようなビジョンに対し Wolfram|Alpha が重要な役割を果たし得る立場にあることを誇りに思う。いま起きているのはほんの手始めにすぎない。この分野で将来アップルと共同でやれることを大いに楽しみにしている。Steve Jobs がもはやおらず、直接関わっていないことが残念だ。

I’m proud that we are in a position to provide an important component for that vision with Wolfram|Alpha. What’s coming out now is just a beginning, and I look forward to what we will do with Apple in this direction in the future. I’m just sad that Steve Jobs will now not be part of it.

大きな励み

四半世紀近く前に Steve Jobs に初めて会ったとき、 NeXT こそ「自分の３０代に成し遂げたいことだ」と聞いて衝撃を受けた。生涯を１０年ごとに区切って、そんな計画を立てるなんてなんと大胆な、と当時は思ったものだ。しかし生涯をかけて大きなプロジェクトをやろうとしているものにとって、Steve Jobs がその限られた数の各１０年で着実に達成した成果を見ることは、大きな励みになるのだ。だがそれも今日で終わりになると思うと実に悲しい。

When I first met Steve Jobs nearly 25 years ago I was struck by him explaining to me that NeXT was what he “wanted to do with his thirties”. At the time, I thought it was a bold thing to plan one’s life in decades like that. And—particularly for those of us who spend their lives doing large projects—it’s incredibly inspiring to see what Steve Jobs was able to achieve in his small number of decades, so tragically cut short today.

Steve、アナタのすべてにありがとう。

Thank you, Steve, for everything.

Stephen Wolfram の追悼記事には、Jobs が「Mathematica」の命名者だったことや、後に妻となるべきひととのデートの話も触れられていて大変興味深い。

Jobs と大きな関わりを持ち、Jobs の稀有の資質を理解していたひとの言葉には訴えるものがある。

付記：インターフェイスから見た VoiceOver と Siri

インターフェイスという観点から考えても興味深い。

触る世界、すなわち「VoiceOver」モードへの入り口はトリプルクリックだった。

そこから音声を介して触る世界が広がった。

トリプルクリックによって一次元のフリックや二次元のローターというマルチタッチ操作が可能になった。触ることによって可能になるコンピューティングの世界だ。

しかし触るという操作をもっと簡単にしたらどうなるか。

ホームボタンをトリプルクリックでなく長押しすれば「Siri」モードになる。

Siri モードの世界では触ることすら必要ない。声という人間に本来的に備わった機能がインターフェイスになるからだ。

音声を媒介として、そこにはまだ誰も経験したことのない未知の世界が広がる。誰も経験していないからベータなのだ。

我々が手にしている iPhone とはそんな可能性を開いてくれるマシンだ。

VoiceOver なんて視覚障害者のためのもの、Siri なんてベータ段階のお遊びに過ぎないなどと考えていては、大切な点を見逃してしまうことになりそうだ。

目が見えなくなってから１０日余りなのに、ずいぶん遠くへきてしまった気がする・・・

TellMe 対 Siri の対決

みんなを夢中にさせた Siri だが、マイクロソフトは一笑に付した。

マイクロソフトの Craig Mundie［リサーチ＆戦略担当役員］は Forbes に対して Siri についてこう語った。

Here’s what Microsoft executive Craig Mundie told Forbes about Siri:

「みんなアップルの発表に夢中だ。マーケティングギミックとしてはいいテだ。しかし技術的にいえば、マイクロソフトは同様の技術を１年以上前に、Windows Phone 7 を導入した時点ですでに持っていた。」

“People are infatuated with Apple announcing it. It’s good marketing, but at least as the technological capability you could argue that Microsoft has had a similar capability in Windows Phones for more than a year, since Windows Phone 7 was introduced.”

そこで、オーストラリアのユーザーが TellMe と Siri ２つを並べて、一対一の対決をさせた。

TellMe 惨敗の模様を記録したのが冒頭のビデオ。

この対決を取り上げた Gruber は「見るも無惨」（Brutal）とひとこと・・・

TellMe がオーストラリア英語の聞き取りに四苦八苦している様子は気の毒でもある。

TellMe でも米語ならちゃんと聞き取れている例もある。

こうしてみると Siri が米国、英国、オーストラリアそれぞれの英語に対応したということは大変なことだったのだ。

オーストラリアのユーザーがやったのと同じことを英国のユーザーがやってもおかしくはない。

単純に物理的音声を処理できるシステムかあるというだけでなく、実際に話されていることばに対応できるかどうかという点が問題なのだろう。

どちらが早くその技術を発明（開発）したかではなく、実用になるレベルまで昇華できたかどうかという問題だ。

すぐれたユーザー体験とは何かということを改めて考えさせられた。
