気になる Apple Watch の展示用スタンド

Apple Watch も然り乍ら、Watch の展示用スタンドが気になって仕方がない。

Horace Dediu のポッドキャストでも、Spring forward イベントで展示への配慮が際立っていたことに触れているのが印象的だった。

充電器と一体化したホルダーは Apple Watch のデザインを邪魔することなく、展示用スタンドとしてはなかなかのすぐれもの。

そのスタンドが展示用テーブルでどのように立っているのか不思議。

写真で見るかぎりは丸い金属の上に留められているようだ。

はやくアップルストアで実物を見てみたい・・・

ブラウザの死

ウェブの死が語られて久しいが（“death of web” をググればすぐ分かる）、じつは人気がなくなったのはウェブではなくウェブブラウザなのだ。2014 年の Flurry の報告によれば、モバイルデバイスでブラウザを使った時間はたったの 14% で、残りの 86%はアプリの使用だった。

The death of the web has long been rumored (just Google “death of web”). However it’s not really the web that is losing popularity, it’s the web browser. Flurry said in its 2014 report that only 14% of time spent on mobile devices is in the browser compared to 86% in apps.

もちろんアプリの大部分は（Twitter のように）モバイルウェブに使われている。ただ、ブラウザは使わずにウェブにアクセスしているということなのだ。

Of course, we actually spend a lot of that time in apps on the mobile web (i.e. tap a link on Twitter); it’s just that we’re accessing the web in non-browsery ways.

気づきもしないし気にもしていない

ブラウザの死はゆっくりと、だが確実に起きている。そして Apple Watch はそれにとどめを刺そうとしているのだと思う。Safari がないだけではない。そのことに誰も気づきもしなければ、気にもしていないようにみえる！ もし Apple Watch に Messages や Weather や・・・Uber がなかったらどうなるか！！！ きっと暴動が起きるに違いない。では Safari がなくなったらどうか？ ノープロブレム。

The death of the browser has been a slow and steady process, but I believe Apple Watch will now be the nail in the coffin. Not only is there no Safari, but no one seems to notice or care! Imagine if Apple Watch had no Messages or no Weather or no… Uber!!! People would riot. But no Safari? No problem.

次にくる「ポスト電話の世界」（post-phone world）では文字通りブラウザには居場所がないのだ。では検索はどうなの？と尋ねるかもしれない。それはブラウジングを検索と錯覚した質問だ。情報が必要なら Siri に尋ねればいい。・・・あるいはグーグルだってきっと Apple Watch のためのアプリを作るに違いない。

There is just no place (literally) for browsers in our post-phone world. But what about search, you say? You are confusing browsing with searching. If you need some info, just ask Siri. Or I’m sure Google will make an app for Apple Watch too.

パニック

いいたいのは、もしアップルがウェブブラウザのないコンピュータを発表したら、あるいはウェブブラウザのない iOS の新バージョンか、それともポートのない MacBook を発表したら、みんなはパニックに陥るだろうということだ。これまでアップルが何かを無くするたびにみんながパニックに陥ったように・・・

The point is, if Apple announced a computer with no web browser, or a new version of iOS with no web browser, or I don’t know, a new MacBook with no ports, people would freak out. Like the way they freak out about everything Apple has ever removed ever.

ブラウザのないウェアラブルの世界

しかし Apple Watch には Safari がないことに対して特段の反応もなく、そういう認識すらもないことから、アップルには当然そうする権利があり、われわれみんなもそのことを受け入れる用意があるのだと考えざるを得ない。ウェアラブルの世界にはウェブブラウザはないものだと・・・

And yet the lack of reaction, or even acknowledgement, that there is no Safari on Apple Watch, leads me to believe that not only is Apple right to not include it, but we are actually ready to accept it: a wearable world with no web browsers.

iOS 8.2 で自動的にインストールされる Apple Watch アプリ

手もとの iPhone を iOS 8.2 にアップグレードした。

いつのまにか「Apple Watch アプリ」が新たにインストールされている。

開くと下段のタブバーに３つのアイコン。最初がデフォルトで Apple Watch を iPhone にペアリングさせるためのもの。写真を撮るだけでペアリングが完了する。

２つ目はコンテンツ。いろいろな Watch ビデオが見れる。

３つ目は App Store へ飛ぶ。Apple Watch のためだけに作られた App Store だ。

このアプリが真価を発揮するのは Watch が出荷されてからの話だけれど・・・

Spring forward イベントの第一印象

やっぱりアップルイベントは実際に見て、聴かなきゃ分からない。

今回もいくつもの意外性があった。（後から考えれば納得できるものだが・・・）

Apple Watch の話は半分過ぎるころまで登場しない。値段が明らかにされたのは残り１０分になってからだった。

イベントが始まって、最初のビデオ画面が中国語！ 中国重視の現れか・・・

Tim Cook の衣装もこれまでと違ってカーディガン。やっとジョブズの呪縛が解けたか・・・

最初の Apple TV は予期せぬ登場だった。Game of Thrones on HBO Now!

一番バッターが Jeff Williams というのも意外。しかも国民病になってきた パーキンソン病、糖尿病、循環器疾患、ぜんそくなどの医学研究だったのがこれまた意外。

Cook の舞台回しも完全に板についてきた。

軽量極薄ノートブックも意外。Air でも Pro でもなくただの MacBook だった。

１２インチ Retina もシングルポートも本当だった。それにしてもコンピュータ基板の小さくなったこと・・・

そして予定の半ばが過ぎたところでやっと Apple Watch の話。Christy Turlington を引き立て役にしたのが意外。「Tim Cook ショー」だ。

Cook がわざわざ “fluoroelastimer” というのを、彼女は「ゴムバンド」（”rubber band”）といってしまう。ハグはおまけ・・・

予定の３分の２が過ぎたころ Apple Watch アプリの紹介。Kevin Lynch が電話を受け、ガレージドアを開けてみせる・・・

でも値段が明らかにされたのは残り１０分になってからだった。

ステンレススチールは 549 ドルから 1049 ドルまで。（42 ミリだと 599 ドルから 1099 ドルまで。）値段はバンド次第で高くなる。［← John Gruber の予想より安かった］

Edition の価格１万ドルをさらりと触れただけだったのにはびっくり。

なかなか興味深いイベントだった・・・

Apple Watch を語り尽くす

３月９日の Spring forward イベント直前のポッドキャストがおもしろい。

いつもはアプリ開発者の苦労や秘話を聞く「Debug」［Guy English と Rene Ritchie がホスト］が Apple Watch の特集を組んでいる。

ゲストは開発者で時計の世界に詳しい Jon Edwards と John Gruber だ。

ギークには不案内な時計の世界を熟知した Jon Edwards が機械式腕時計からクォーツ革命、ハイエンド高級腕時計の世界、Apple Watch に至るまで縦横に語る。

話したいことはすべて話したと Gruber がいうだけあってとても濃い中味。

印象に残った発言をいくつか・・・

Jon Edwards：

・デザイン的にデジタルクラウンは中心にきてほしかった（バッテリーチャージャーのせい？）
・ケースまわりにもっと Force Touch が欲しかった
・WatchKit には文字面（watch face）の UI エレメントが少ない
・機械式時計の detent［戻り止め、つめ］に相当する digital detent が Taptic Engine
・これは大きな可能性を開く
・これまでの Jony Ive の発言からして必ずしも製品寿命（product longevity）は長くなさそう
・デザイン的にはモジュラーではなく swappable ではない
・だからゴールドウォッチは５桁ではなく４桁どまりでは

John Gruber：

・相手の思いを伝える方法としてのハートビート（好きなクラスの女の子にハートビートを送る、など）
・パーソナルで親密なコミュニケーションに道を開く Taptic Engine
・Angela Ahrendts を引き抜いた殺し文句は Apple Watch をまかせるからではなかったか

他にも様々な視点が語られて興味深い。ぜひ一度は聞いておきたい内容だ。

アップルには１８Ｋゴールドの金の含有量を半分にできる特許があると聞いたときは目を剥いたが、アップルだけではないようだ・・・

《Update》2000 〜 3000 ドルの Edition の可能性

ほんとにアップルが１万ドル（百万円強）もする Apple Watch の純金モデルを出すだろうか？ そんな疑問をもつひとも多い。

アップルギークのひとり Marco Arment も、間違っているかもしれないがと前置きして Edition はほぼ５千ドルという予想をしている。

それに対して Sumocat が興味深いツイートを返している。

そんな特許なんて初耳だが、たしかにリンク先の米国特許商標庁サイトにはアップルの特許が示されている。

これに基づいて Dr. Drang がアップルの１８Ｋゴールドではいかにして通常の１８Ｋゴールドより金を減らすことができるか詳しく解説している。

セラミックを混ぜた金属マトリックス複合素材

アップルのいう金とは金属マトリックス複合素材［metal matrix composite］のことで、普通にいう合金［alloy］のことではない。金に銀や銅、その他の金属を混合して硬くする代わりに、アップルは密度の低いセラミック粒子を混ぜて硬くする。セラミックによってアップルの金はより硬く、キズがつきにくくなり（９月発表時に Tim Cook が強調した点）、そして密度が全体的に低くなるのだ。

[…] Apple’s gold is a metal matrix composite, not a standard alloy. Instead of mixing the gold with silver, copper, or other metals to make it harder, Apple is mixing it with low-density ceramic particles. The ceramic makes Apple’s gold harder and more scratch-resistant—which Tim Cook touted during the September announcement—and it also makes it less dense overall.

貧弱な筆者の頭では理屈がよく理解できないが、要すれば特許のせいでアップルは通常の１８Ｋ金より金の含有量が少ない１８Ｋ金を作れるということらしい。

・・・で、もし Dr. Drang のいうとおりだとすると、最高級モデルの Edition は１万ドルまでしない可能性だって出てくることになる。

Edition は 5000 ドルという予想をしたあともまだ高すぎたかもしれないと思っていたが、このこと［Dr. Drang の解説］は極めて安価な Edition の可能性を指し示しているのではないかと思う。John Gruber はそうは考えないようだが、いろんな意味でその方が理に叶っているように思われる。アップルのブランドエリート主義、大衆マーケットの疎外、それにすこぶる高価な時計が数年で陳腐化してしまうという不愉快な問題も、もし Edition の価格設定が 2000 〜 3000 ドルに近いものになればすべてほとんど解決するだろうから・・・

I’ve been thinking since my $5,000 Edition guess that I probably guessed too high, and this may be a strong sign that a significantly cheaper Edition is a possibility. Gruber doesn’t think so, but on many levels, it would make a lot more sense: Apple’s brand elitism, mass-market alienation, and the uncomfortable issue of an extremely expensive watch that’s completely obsolete in a few years would all be significantly less problematic if the Edition was priced closer to $2,000–3,000.

アップルがそうするかどうかは分からない。しかし可能であることは確かだ。コストに比例し、常識的で健全なマージンの価格設定で、中流の上層のひとたちに高級でラグジュアリーな品質とマテリアルを提供することはこれまでのアップルのスタイルによりふさわしいものだ。問題は今でもアップルがそうかという点だ。それももうすぐ分かる・・・

We don’t know yet if Apple will do that, but it sure looks like they can. Pricing it reasonably proportionally to its costs with a healthy-but-not-obscene margin to offer luxury quality and materials to the upper-middle class is certainly more the style of the company Apple has been — the question is whether it’s the style of today’s Apple. We’ll find out soon.

時間を取り戻す

Apple Watch を実際に使ったひとたちから取材した Panzarino は iPhone を使う機会が減ったという話を何度も耳にしたという。

電話を使わなくなった

Apple Watch を試したひとの話ではこれまでと比べて電話を使う回数がはるかに、極端なまでに減ったという。返事したり、手首を見たり（glance）、口述するのにタップするだけで済むのは、これまでの iPhone を取り出して、ロックを外し、容赦なく注意を向けることを迫ってきたやり方とは甚だしく異なる。

People that have worn the Watch say that they take their phones out of their pockets far, far less than they used to. A simple tap to reply or glance on the wrist or dictation is a massively different interaction model than pulling out an iPhone, unlocking it and being pulled into its merciless vortex of attention suck.

ほとんど日中は電話を使うのを辞めたとあるユーザーは語った。これまで取り出しては使っていたのに、もうそうしなくなったというのだ。スマートフォンスクリーンのブルーの輝きがこの１０年というものソーシャルなやりとりを支配してきたことを考えるとこれは正気とは思えない事態だ。

One user told me that they nearly “stopped” using their phone during the day; they used to have it out and now they don’t, period. That’s insane when you think about how much the blue glow of smartphone screens has dominated our social interactions over the past decade.

But the Apple Watch can return some of that attention and, more importantly, time back to you.

And that is the target market of the Apple Watch. Not “rich people” (though there’s a model specially for them), not “tech geeks” and not “Apple fanatics.” It’s people who want more time, and that is a very large target.

Apple Watch を「attention」（ユーザーにとって無限にあるわけではない注意力、意欲、エネルギー、なかんずく「時間」）という視点で捉えたのは彼が初めてではないかと思う。

Apple Watch に「スマート」アクセサリーがあったら余計にカネを出すだろうか。バッテリーを長持ちさせるといった新しい機能が加わるとしたら・・・

Would you shell out money for a ‘smart’ accessory band for an Apple Watch that added additional capabilities? More battery life, perhaps?

というのも Apple Watch には未発表のポートがあるからだ。Watch の OS に直接アクセスし、診断するのに使われる。いずれはアクセサリーの接続にも使われるかもしれない。

The reason I ask is that the Apple Watch has a port that the company has yet to show off. It’s being used for diagnostics and direct access to the Watch operating system, but it’s feasible that could be used to connect accessories in the future.

真ちゅうの６接点アレイポートで、時計下部のバンドコネクタースロット溝の内部にある。複数のソースがその存在と配置を私に確認してくれた。

The port has a 6-dot brass contact array inside the groove for the ‘bottom’ strap connector slot. Several sources have confirmed its existence and placement to me.
