《Update》2000 〜 3000 ドルの Edition の可能性
ほんとにアップルが１万ドル（百万円強）もする Apple Watch の純金モデルを出すだろうか？ そんな疑問をもつひとも多い。
アップルギークのひとり Marco Arment も、間違っているかもしれないがと前置きして Edition はほぼ５千ドルという予想をしている。
それに対して Sumocat が興味深いツイートを返している。

そんな特許なんて初耳だが、たしかにリンク先の米国特許商標庁サイトにはアップルの特許が示されている。
これに基づいて Dr. Drang がアップルの１８Ｋゴールドではいかにして通常の１８Ｋゴールドより金を減らすことができるか詳しく解説している。

セラミックを混ぜた金属マトリックス複合素材
アップルのいう金とは金属マトリックス複合素材［metal matrix composite］のことで、普通にいう合金［alloy］のことではない。金に銀や銅、その他の金属を混合して硬くする代わりに、アップルは密度の低いセラミック粒子を混ぜて硬くする。セラミックによってアップルの金はより硬く、キズがつきにくくなり（９月発表時に Tim Cook が強調した点）、そして密度が全体的に低くなるのだ。

Instead of mixing the gold with silver, copper, or other metals to make it harder, Apple is mixing it with low-density ceramic particles. The ceramic makes Apple’s gold harder and more scratch-resistant—which Tim Cook touted during the September announcement—and it also makes it less dense overall.

貧弱な筆者の頭では理屈がよく理解できないが、要すれば特許のせいでアップルは通常の１８Ｋ金より金の含有量が少ない１８Ｋ金を作れるということらしい。

・・・で、もし Dr. Drang のいうとおりだとすると、最高級モデルの Edition は１万ドルまでしない可能性だって出てくることになる。

2000 〜 3000 ドルの Edition の可能性はどうか
Edition は 5000 ドルという予想をしたあともまだ高すぎたかもしれないと思っていたが、このこと［Dr. Drang の解説］は極めて安価な Edition の可能性を指し示しているのではないかと思う。John Gruber はそうは考えないようだが、いろんな意味でその方が理に叶っているように思われる。アップルのブランドエリート主義、大衆マーケットの疎外、それにすこぶる高価な時計が数年で陳腐化してしまうという不愉快な問題も、もし Edition の価格設定が 2000 〜 3000 ドルに近いものになればすべてほとんど解決するだろうから・・・
I’ve been thinking since my $5,000 Edition guess that I probably guessed too high, and this may be a strong sign that a significantly cheaper Edition is a possibility. Gruber doesn’t think so, but on many levels, it would make a lot more sense: Apple’s brand elitism, mass-market alienation, and the uncomfortable issue of an extremely expensive watch that’s completely obsolete in a few years would all be significantly less problematic if the Edition was priced closer to $2,000–3,000.
アップルがそうするかどうかは分からない。しかし可能であることは確かだ。コストに比例し、常識的で健全なマージンの価格設定で、中流の上層のひとたちに高級でラグジュアリーな品質とマテリアルを提供することはこれまでのアップルのスタイルによりふさわしいものだ。問題は今でもアップルがそうかという点だ。それももうすぐ分かる・・・
We don’t know yet if Apple will do that, but it sure looks like they can. Pricing it reasonably proportionally to its costs with a healthy-but-not-obscene margin to offer luxury quality and materials to the upper-middle class is certainly more the style of the company Apple has been — the question is whether it’s the style of today’s Apple. We’ll find out soon.
