Amir Efrati が主宰する新しいテクノロジーサイト「The Information」によれば、Forstall はイタリアや南アフリカへの旅をしてこの一年を過ごしたという。またスタートアップへのアドバイスや、教育、貧困、人権などの慈善事業にも関わってきたという。

Amir Efrati at new technology site The Information is reporting that Forstall spent the year traveling to Italy and South Africa. He also advised a few startups, and became more philanthropically involved, focusing on education, poverty, and human rights.

自分が聞いているところでは、Tim Cook から首を切られたとき Forstall は退職金として多額のカネをオファーされ、受け取ったという話だ。退職の条件には、Forstall が同業他社の仕事をしてはならない期間や公の場では沈黙を守ることなどが含まれているという。いわゆるガーデン・リーブ（garden leave）［注］ というヤツで、今回のような物議をかもした上級管理職を辞めさせるときによく見られる。

What I’ve heard is that when Tim Cook fired him, Forstall was offered (and accepted) a big truck full of money as part of a severance package. The terms of the severance agreement included a period of time during which Forstall can not (could not?) work for any other company, nor make any public statements. A garden leave, if you will — and pretty standard stuff in a tempestuous senior executive shake-up like this.

自分にとって唯一関心があるのは、沈黙を守る期間あるいは同業他社に努めてはならない期間がどのくらいの長さかという点だ。自分は１年間ではないかと考えたが、もしそうなら［日本語］今や彼は話すのも他社で働くのも自由なハズだ。だから昨日 The Information の記事を聞いて興奮した — Forstall がアップルを辞めたあと初めてのインタビューを The Information が獲得したのだと思ったからだ。（自分は羨ましいと思った。）

The only question I’m curious about is how long the quiet / non-compete period is. I thought perhaps it was one year, which would mean he’s now free to talk and work elsewhere, which in turn was why I was at first excited to read The Information’s report yesterday. I thought perhaps they’d landed Forstall’s first post-Apple interview. (And I was jealous.)

iOS 7 は決してフラットではなかった！

Jony Ive が登場する iOS 7 の紹介ビデオで、オヤと思った瞬間があった。

iPhone の平たいはずの画面が、左右に傾けるとまるで奥行きのある立体画面のように見えたからだ。［２分４７〜４９秒ごろ］

No one has questioned whether Jony Ive can lead a hardware design team. Whether he could lead a software design team, however, has been the biggest question facing Apple over the last eight months. The key, I think, is that his approach, and Apple’s as a whole under its post-Forstall organizational structure, is not to view this as two different things, hardware and software, but rather as a single thing: design.

There is a deep intellectual rigor to the design of iOS 7, and it’s hard not to see it as being profoundly informed by Ive’s background in hardware. In hardware, design is limited by physics: weight, density, size, connections, seams. Software doesn’t face those design limits. The old design of iOS 6 took advantage of that lack of limits, to its detriment. In iOS 6, you open a folder on the home screen, and linen is something you see underneath. You pull down Notification Center, and linen is something you see over. It’s both over and under. Hardware doesn’t work like that, but software can, because software can show you anything, conceptual logic be damned.

The design of iOS 7 is based on rules. There’s an intricate system at work, a Z-axis of layers organized in a logical way. There is a profound reduction in the use of faux-3D visual effects and textures, but iOS 7 is anything but flat. It is three dimensional not just visually but logically. It uses translucency not to show off, but to provide you with a sense of place. When you pull the new Control Center panel up from the bottom of the screen, its translucency lets you know that you haven’t gone somewhere new, you’re just looking at something over where you were.

There’s a sense of place, depth, and spatiality in iOS 7 that makes it feel like hardware. A real thing, not pixels rendered on glass. It’s as though Ive has brought the same design goals that have always informed Apple’s hardware to software. And here, his team isn’t limited by physics. Planes can have zero thickness. But it’s a system, in the truest sense of the word.

過剰な美の排除

iOS 7 is not perfect; this new design framework will evolve and improve over time, just like iOS’s original aesthetic did. But it’s a conceptual foundation that corrects all of the excesses of the original iOS aesthetic. It’s radically different but not disorienting. Less flashy, less bling, more subtle, more refined.

人工甘味料的弱点

This is the first product of the post-Jobs Apple. The result shows that in some ways Apple’s software design has gotten better, because it was Jobs (and Forstall) who had a penchant for exuberant textures and gimmickry. Jobs’s taste in hardware was nearly perfect, but his taste in software had a weakness for the saccharine. Wood grain, linen, Rich Corinthian leather, etc. It was all just sugar for the eyes. This is a weakness Jony Ive’s software taste clearly does not suffer.

And evidently the spartan, elegant aesthetic that Ive has developed around Apple’s hardware is now being brought to bear on its software, as well. Last week, 9to5Mac’s Mark Gurman reported that iOS 7 would feature a “flat” design that favors simplicity over flash. I’ve heard similar descriptions from sources who say iOS 7 is iOS “de-glitzed.”

脱 Forstall 化

With Scott Forstall — an advocate for flashy, skeuomorphic design and its stitched-leather and faux-wood-grain flourishes — now gone from Apple, and Ive in an expanded role, the current and former Apple employees I’ve spoken to say iOS 7 was destined for a new coat of paint. As one said, “Sounds like a much-needed ‘de-Forstallization.’

デザインをいじるなら

しかし iOS 7 から skeuomorphic 的な光沢がすべてなくなってしまうワケではない。2007 年に iPhone が発表されて以来持っている OS のルックスはあまり変更されていない。アップルがデザインをいじるつもりなら、まさに今がその時だ。BlackBerry 10 や Windows Phone のモバイル OS には改善の余地がまだまだあるとすれば、アップルとしては iOS がホコリをかぶって見えるリスクをあえて冒すことはできないのだ。

Which is not to say that the design of iOS 7 is entirely about removing skeuomorphic gloss. Fact is, Apple hasn’t much changed the operating system’s look since the iPhone was introduced in 2007. If the company has good ideas for design tweaks, it’s about time it implemented them. With new mobile operating systems like BlackBerry 10 and Windows Phone proving that there’s plenty of room left for innovation in the market, Apple can ill afford even the risk of the perception that iOS might be getting dusty.

どうやって Safari の秘密を守ったか

少し前に話題になった元アップルプログラマーの Safari 開発秘話が大変オモシロい。

本名を名乗らなかった Safari

日夜 Safari の開発をやっていた頃、まだ Safari という名前で呼ばれるようになるずっと以前のことだが、それはマイクロソフトの Internet Explorer のふりをしていたものだ。そう、1998 年以来 Mac OS にバンドルされていた Internet Explorer for Mac のことだ。Safari 発表の半年前のころには、Mozilla ブラウザのふりをし始めた。

For much of the time we spent developing Safari — long before it was called by that name — it pretended to be Microsoft Internet Explorer. Specifically, Internet Explorer for Mac, which Apple had provided with the OS since 1998. Less than six months before Safari debuted, it started pretending to be a Mozilla browser.

なぜそんなことをしたのかって？ コードも動作も非常に異なる Safari をどうやって偽ることができたのかって？

Why did we do this? And how did we make Safari pretend to be these browsers when its code and behavior were so different?

Not only was I tasked by Scott Forstall with building a browser and building a team to build that browser, I had to keep the whole damn project a secret. Which, by the way, really complicated the shit out of hiring most of the original team since I couldn’t tell them what they were working on until they took the job. Talk about your management challenges. But that’s another story.

So, secrecy. We weren’t under physical lockdown like Jony Ive’s design group was then, or like the iPhone team would be years later. But unless you knew who to look for, you were never going to find us on campus. And if you did, it’s unlikely you could tell what we were doing unless you caught one of us actually running Safari — something we usually did with our office doors closed.

I wasn’t worried about talk either. Forstall certainly trusted me – that’s one of the many things that made him a great boss. And I trusted my team — otherwise I wouldn’t have hired them. ウェブブラウザがウェブサーバーからページを読み込むとき、ブラウザは ID としてサーバーに対してユーザーエージェント文字列（user agent string）を明らかにする。基本的には名前、バージョン、プラットフォームなどのことだ。同時にまたブラウザはサーバーに IP アドレスも手渡すので、サーバーはどこにページを送ればいいのか分かるワケだ。このやり取りのおかげでウェブは動くことができ、さらに誰がどこで、どのブラウザを使っているかをサーバーに教えることができるのだ。

When a Web browser fetches a page from a Web server, the browser identifies itself to that server with a user agent string — basically its name, version, platform, etc. The browser also gives the server an IP address so the server knows where to return the page. This exchange not only makes the Web work, it also allows the server to tell who is using what browser and where they’re using it.

何をいいたいのか分かるだろう？ でもそれだけではない・・・

固定 IP アドレス

1990 年当時、先見の明のあるアップルの IT 担当者は、アップルのために IP アドレスの Class A ネットワーク全体を確保しておいた。そうなのだ、アップルは 16,777,216 個の固定 IP アドレス（static IP addresses）を確保していた。そしてこれに属するアドレスは — 今では「/8 block」と呼ばれているが — すべて同じ数字で始まるのだ。アップルの場合、それは 17 だった。

Back around 1990, some forward-thinking IT person secured for Apple an entire Class A network of IP addresses. That’s right, Apple has 16,777,216 static IP addresses. And because all of these addresses belong together — in what’s now called a “/8 block” — every one of them starts with the same number. In Apple’s case, the number is 17.

CIA 並みのプロジェクト

みんなが忠誠を宣誓をして CIA の非合法活動なみに密かにこのプロジェクトを遂行していたけれど、アップルキャンパスのネットワークを利用するときに Safari を「Safari」という名前で使うワケにはいかなかった。さもないと、ウェブサーバーの管理者がどこかでログファイルをスキャンして、ユーザーエージェント文字列と発信元の IP アドレスを突き合わせるかもしれないのだ。そうなれば 2003 年１月７日の Macworld で Steve Jobs が発表しようとしているビッグサプライズがダメになってしまう。ひいては自分もそうなるということなのだ！

Even though we operated the project like some CIA black op — with loyalty oaths and all — we couldn’t let Safari be “Safari” when we used it on the Apple campus network. Otherwise, some Web server administrator somewhere might be scanning their log files and notice the connection between user agent string and IP address origin. Then the big surprise Steve Jobs wanted to unveil at Macworld on January 7, 2003, would be shot. And, likely, so would I.

So we hid my cleverly designed Safari user agent string whenever we were at Apple. And I say “my” because that’s actually one of the few pieces of code in Safari and WebKit that 1) I can claim to have designed and 2) is still actually in the source. Thank God my engineering team removed or refactored all my other hacks. I hired good people.

アップルキャンパスのネットワークを使うとき以外、すなわち自宅ではいつも、Safari をいじって本当のユーザーエージェント文字列を有効にしていた。互換性テストのためにそうせざるを得なかったのだ。文字列をいじることで当時のウェブサイトと最大限の互換性を確保することができたのだ。Safari のユーザーエージェント文字列には今でも余分な情報 — KHTML、Gecko など他のブラウザエンジンの名前 — が残っているのはそういうワケだ。

Whenever we were off the Apple campus network, e.g. in our homes, we modified Safari to enable its real user agent string. And we had to do this for compatibility testing. That allowed me to tweak the string for maximum compatibility with the websites of that time. Which explains why the Safari user agent string has so much extra information in it, e.g. KHTML, like Gecko — the names of other browser engines.

We couldn’t ship with the real Safari user agent string disabled, but we came up with the next best thing — automatically enabling it after a certain date. Just about this time 10 years ago, days before it was to debut, Safari went from hiding its light under a bushel to being proud of who it really was.

「当然の報いだ」：Tony Fadell

iPod の父と呼ばれた Tony Fadell の Scott Forstall 解任に対するコメントが話題になっている。

「Scott は当然の報いを受けた」（Scott got what he deserved）、「みんなが喜んでいる」（people were cheering in Cupertino）というものだ。

Scott Forstall がアップルを逐われたことに対する Tony Fadell の「彼は当然の報いを受けた」というコメントについては、この二人が iPhone の方向付けについて直接張り合う立場にあったことを考慮すべきだろう。2008 年に自分は次のように書いたことがある。

クパティーノのウワサでは、Fadell は辞めさせられたのではなく、Papermaster のようにアップル携帯デバイスのハードウェアエンジニアリング全体を統轄する役割を与えられなかったからだという。iPhone によってアップルにおけるエリートＡチームとしての iPod の影が薄くなったが、Tony Fadell はＢチームで収まるようなタマではなかったということだ。

The word on the street in Cupertino is not that Fadell was pushed out the door, but that he was never offered a role like Papermaster’s, encompassing all of Apple’s handheld hardware engineering. The iPhone has eclipsed the iPod as the A Team at Apple, and Tony Fadell does not sound like a B Team sort of guy.

みんながよろこんでいるワケではない

そういうことで Fadell は必ずしも偏見のない立場ということではないようだ。また Forstall の追放をアップル社員がよろこんでいるというコメントについては、それも本当だとは思うけれど、それがみんなではないという点に注意すべきだ。少なくとも Forstall の iOS 部門では、多くのエンジニアやデザイナーは Forstall の下で働くことを好み、みんなが彼を支持していると感じていた。彼は派閥的 — 偏向的 — ではあったが、誰もが彼を嫌っていたワケではないのだ。

So it’s not like Fadell is an unbiased observer here. And as for his comment that Forstall’s ouster resulted in cheering from employees in Cupertino, I’m sure that’s true, but it’s important to keep in mind that the cheering was not universal. At least within Forstall’s iOS division, many engineers and designers liked working under Forstall, and felt that he had their backs. He was divisive — polarizing — not universally disliked.

いずれは命運が尽きる

いずれはアップルも命運が尽きる。そうだ、地上で最も価値ある会社が少しずつ活気を失い、月並みな会社になってしまうのだ。考えたこともなく、予想もできなかったものになってしまう。これぞ恐ろしくも効率的な技術淘汰の世界なのだ。なぜならそこは、優れたネズミ取りを作ることより、「なんでそんなものが必要なんだ？」と尋ねるような輩がうようよいる業界の話だからだ。

Apple is eventually doomed. Yes, the most valuable company on the planet will slowly fade into stagnant mediocrity. It will be replaced by something that they will not predict and they will not see coming. This horrifically efficient culling is a fact of life in technology because it is an industry populated by a demographic intent not on building a better mousetrap, but who avidly ask, “Why the hell do we need mousetraps?”

アップルの悲運は静かに始まるが、何時それが始まるのかは誰も正確には予想できないだろうと思う。数十年後の歴史家なら、様々に定量化可能な洞察を重ねた結果明らかになると思われる、そんな終わりの始まりとなるたったひとつの出来事をピンポイントで当てることができるだろう。実際の出来事はさまざまに歪曲され、雲に覆われ、あるいは完全に忘れ去られてしまうからこそ、「明らかに」なるように思われるのであり、だからこそすべてが明白かつ、より早く、単純に思えるのだ。そのような出来事はジョブズの死を皮切りに始まり、それ以降の出来事は重要さに応じて明確に区分され、そして「ここだ。これがそうだ。ここから始まったのだ」ということになる。

Apple’s doom will start quietly and I doubt anyone can predict how it will actually begin. It will be historians who, decades from now, will easily pin its demise to a single event that will appear obvious given years of quantifiable insight. And it will only be “obvious” because the real details will have been twisted, clouded, or forgotten entirely, so it will all seem clearer, faster, and simpler. Their explanation will start with the passing of Steve Jobs, and they will draw a clear line to a subsequent event of significance and will say, “Here. This is it. This is when it began.”

未完の長いリスト

Executive rearrangements have been going on at Apple for years. Remember Mark Papermaster? Avie Tevanian? Jon Rubinstein? Steve Sakoman? Tony Fadell? Sina Tamaddon? Bertrand Serlet? Fred Anderson? Nancy Heinen? There’s likely a compelling departure backstory for all of these key players, but the sheer length of this incomplete list gives some perspective to the recent announcement regarding Scott Forstall and John Browett – no big deal. Happens all the time.

Papermaster がそうだったように、Browett もアップルのカルチャーに馴染めなかったということのように見える。彼が着任したことでアップルがひどいアレルギー症状を示したという意味だ。しかし Forstall の場合は、古くからのアップル本流（old school）なのだ。私がまだアップルにいたころ、彼こそが唯一ジョブズの正統なる後継者で、ジョブズを思わせる様々な特徴を兼ね備えているというのが、もっぱら Caffe Macs［注：アップル本社の社員食堂］でのウワサだった。すなわち、

Like Papermaster before him, all the signals point to the fact that Browett was not a cultural fit, which is Apple-speak for the organism having an intense allergic reaction to his arrival. Forstall, however, was old school. In my years at Apple, the Caffe Macs chatter about Forstall was that he was the only legit successor to Jobs because he displayed a variety of Jobsian characteristics. Namely:

・なぜ彼がうまくやってのけるのか、その成功の処方箋は誰にも分からなかった

– He was an asshole, but…
– Success seemed to surround him, and…

私がアップルを辞めたあとでも、重役連の間での Forstall の尊大な態度についてはよく耳にした。それでも彼が辞めたことはショックだった。スティーブ・ジョブズ本人にはなれなかったとしても、アップルに残った連中の中では最もスティーブ・ジョブズに近かったからだ。彼の周囲にはいつもある種の攪乱的要素（a certain amount of disruption）がつきまとっていたが、それこそアップルでの仕事のやり方だったし、それはいわばうまく制御された内部戦争（well-managed internal warfare）だったのだ。イノベーションはみんなで決める委員会などからは生まれない。イノベーションは闘いなのだ。汚く、死者も出る。しかし闘いのあとには、誰も想像できなかった何か重要なものが達成されるのだ。

While I’d continued to hear about the disdain amongst the executive ranks about Forstall after I left Apple, I was still shocked about his departure, because while he was in no way Steve Jobs, he was the best approximation of Steve Jobs that Apple had left. You came to expect a certain amount of disruption around him because that’s how business was done at Apple – it was well-managed internal warfare. Innovation is not born out out of a committee; innovation is a fight. It’s messy, people die, but when the battle is over, something unimaginably significant has been achieved.

攪乱的要素はどうなる？

Forstall が辞めたあと、その仕事はそれぞれ Bob Mansfield、Jony Ive、Eddy Cue、Craig Federighi に分割された。彼らが才能ある有能なリーダーであることは疑いもないが、彼らは果たして攪乱的要素を持っている（disruptive）だろうか？ そうあらんとするインセンティブを持ち合わせているだろうか？ 私の立場から見れば、責任を分担することとなる連中はオペレーションの面では世界で最も有能かもしれない。オペレーションのリーダーとしての仕事は、予想し難く、測り難い様々な点を探し出しては少しでも減らすことだ。

With Forstall’s departure, I believe his former lieutenants have been distributed to Bob Mansfield, Jony Ive, Eddy Cue, and Craig Federighi. While there is no doubt in my mind that these are talented and qualified leaders, are they disruptive? Are they incentivized as such? Because from where I’m standing, the guy in charge is possibly the most talented operational leader on the planet. And an operational leader’s job is ferret out and exterminate all things that make their world less predictable and measured.

「協調」なんて

解任のプレス発表で私をもっとも不安にさせたのは最初の文章であり、「協調」（collaboration）ということばだった。目を閉じてスティーブ・ジョブズに会うところを想像してみてほしい。どんな具合に進行して、結論が出るか想像するのだ。「協調」なんてことばが少しでも思い浮かんだりするだろうか？ 私にはとてもそうは思えない。私はひたすら針の筵（むしろ）に座り、彼が爆発しズタズタにするのを待つだけだ。一見重要とも思えないアイコンをおざなりに作っただけなのに・・・

The word that worried me the most in the press release was in the first sentence. The word was “collaboration”. Close your eyes and imagine a meeting with Steve Jobs. Imagine how it proceeds and how decisions are made. Does the word collaboration ever enter your mind? Not mine. I’m just sitting there on pins and needles waiting for the guy to explode and rip us to shreds because we phoned it in on a seemingly unimportant icon.

予想の出来ない不安定さ

どうしたら力を合わせてチームが仕事をできるかということに多くの時間を割いてきた私が、予想出来ない不安定さ（volatility）に重きを置くのは奇妙に思えるかもしれない。大きく、安定したオペレーションチームによってアップルが大いに裨益するのは間違いない。しかし同時に、競争力を保持するためには攪乱者のグループがいることも必要だと強く信じる。

As someone who spends much of his time figuring out how to get teams to work together, the premium I’m placing on volatility might seem odd. I believe Apple benefits greatly from having a large, stable operational team that consistently and steadily gets shit done, but I also believe that in order to maintain its edge Apple needs a group of disruptors.

始まりになりはしまいか

Scott Forstall が好きか嫌いかは別にして、彼が去ったことによりアップルはより安定した会社になるだろう。そしてそれが始まりになりはしまいかと怖れる。

Love him or hate him, Scott Forstall’s departure makes Apple a more stable company, and I wonder if that is how it begins.

アップルは未来を目指す

Scott Forstall の解任は大方の予期せぬところだった。

その直後に書かれた Micah Singleton の投稿がとても興味深い。

Forstall ではなく Cook の視点から書かれており、短いながら事の本質を衝いているように思えるからだ。

双頭のモデル

スティーブ・ジョブズが CEO だった時代、アップルにおけるリーダーシップは双頭の怪物だった。あらゆるアップル製品にはスティーブの手触りがあった。一方当時 COO だった Tim Cook はオペレーションの万全を図り、製品はきちんと顧客の手に届けられた。この双頭モデルのおかげで、アップルは創造性の面でも経営の面でもかつてない成功を収めた。いまや CEOになった Tim Cook は先日ある動きをしたが、それによって双頭のモデルが復活した。少し形を変えて、Tim Cook が全体をリードし、Jony Ive 卿がジョブズの役割を果たして、世界最大の会社の創造性を統括する形になってはいるが・・・

When Steve Jobs was CEO of Apple, its senior leadership was a two-headed monster. Steve put his touch on every product Apple released, while then COO Tim Cook made sure operations ran smoothly, and products were properly distributed. Using this model, Apple had unprecedented creative and financial success. With the recent moves made by now CEO Tim Cook, this model has returned, albeit slightly altered, with Cook leading, and Sir Jony Ive playing the role of Jobs, taking over creative control of the world’s largest company.

創造的タッチ

認めるべきは認めよ。敢えてやり方を変えなくても、アップルは数多の成功を納め、たっぷり利益もあげることができただろう。しかし Cook はかつてアップルの隅々まで充満していた創造的タッチ（creative touch）失われ、何らかの手を打つ必要があることに気づいていた。かくて Ive に（創造性に関する限り）支配を委ね、ふたたび松明が灯されたのだ。そしてジョブズのオリジナル iPad 発表以来見ることのできなかった士気と期待をもって、全社が動き始めた。

Give credit where it is due: Apple would have had plenty of success, and made a ton of money standing pat, but Cook realized the creative touch that once permeated throughout Apple had disappeared, and moves needed to be made. With Ive at the helm, creatively speaking, the light has been switched back on, and employees throughout Apple are moving around with expectations and morale unseen since Jobs unveiled the iPad.

みなが認めるデザインの天才

Tim Cook はまさにこの仕事にうってつけだ。彼はアップルを真に、その核心において理解している。Cook は何が問題か、何を（それも直ちに）変えるべきかを理解している。マージンがいかに高かろうと、銀行にどれだけの現金があろうと、アップルの真の遺産（true legacy）は革新的デザイン（innovative design）であり、衆目の一致するデザインの天才がアップルを前に導く必要があることを彼は理解している。９０年代末にアップルに復帰したときジョブズが始めた双頭のモデルが、ジョブスでなくても［注：All rights reversed、転載自由、コピー自由］うまくいくことを理解しているのだ。

Yes, Tim Cook is the right man for the job. He understands Apple at its core. He understands when there is an issue, changes need to be made, and quickly. He understands that no matter how high margins are, or how much cash they have in the bank, the true legacy of Apple is innovative design, and a proven design genius must lead them forward. He understands the two-headed model that Jobs installed after his return to Apple in the late 90’s can work when reversed.

来年の WWDC を期待

創造性を統括した Ive の最初の成果を見るのは WWDC ‘13 になるだろう。そのとき iOS および OS X の次期バージョンが発表されることになる。年初には計画が白紙に戻される。ハードウェアの発表はないだろう。予想外の iPad のアップデートを除けば・・・。Jony Ive 卿の舞台はこの夏に定められた。アップルの未来のソフトウェアがいかなる変化を遂げるか、皆が目撃することになるのだ。

We should see the first fruits of Ive’s creative control at WWDC ‘13, when the next iterations of iOS and OS X are due to be unveiled. The slate has been cleared for the beginning of the year. There will be no hardware releases, barring another unexpected iPad update. The stage has been set for a Sir Jony Ive showcase this summer, and we’ll all be waiting to see what the future of Apple’s software will look like.
