アップルの教育イベント

［熱中させる、やる気を起こす］

心待ちにしていたアップル教育イベントがグッゲンハイム美術館で開かれた。

アップルのストリーミングビデオを見ながら、いくつもの思いが心をよぎった。

Steve Jobs 亡き後はおなじみの Phil Schiller が代わりだ。

前置きなしにすぐ本論にはいるところは以前と変わらない。単刀直入はみな同じだ。

Jobs 時代とやり方がブレないところが好きだ。正しい方向だと思う。

今回のキーワードは「student engagement」ではないかと思う。

「engagement」とは訳しにくいことばだが、勉強に対する取り組み方、集中、熱意、やる気といったところか。

「学生の興味をそそる」、「学生にやる気を起こさせる」という切り口でアップルに出来ることを、インタラクティブなデジタル教科書とそのためのツールという形で提案した。

「Life on Earth」のようなすばらしい教科書を使えるのならもう一度学生の昔に返りたいと思う。

期待の電子書籍作成ツールは「iBooks Author」だった。

WYSIWYG のオーサリングツール。ドラッグ＆ドロップの簡単な操作はこれまでの iLife や iWork ソフトの集大成のような感じがする。

それにしても無料とはスゴいなあと思う。

はやく自分も触ってみたい。

デモもデベロッパに任せず、すべて Roger Rosner はじめアップルの人間がこなすところがいい。

これを機に教育の世界で大きな変化が起きそうな予感がする。

iPhone アプリのときと同じように、世界中の教育関係者、デベロッパが一斉に走り始めるのではないか。

そのとき日本はどうなる？

電子書籍作成ツールが目玉か

Chris Foresman has a nice scoop at Ars:

アップルは１月１９日（木曜日）のメディアイベントで、これまで教育に生かすべく積み重ねて来た努力の成果を発表する予定だ。ウワサはもっぱら電子書籍に集中しているが、事情に詳しい筋が Ars Technica に語ったところによると、インタラクティブ電子書籍の作成に役立つツール、いわば「電子書籍向け GarageBand」とでもいうべきものをアップルは発表する予定だという。これにより現在のプラットフォームは iPhone・iPad ユーザーへの配信が可能なものに拡張されることになる。

Apple is slated to announce the fruits of its labor on improving the use of technology in education at its special media event on Thursday, January 19. While speculation has so far centered on digital textbooks, sources close to the matter have confirmed to Ars that Apple will announce tools to help create interactive e-books — the “GarageBand for e-books,” so to speak — and expand its current platform to distribute them to iPhone and iPad users.

オーサリングツールは重要だ

優れたオーサリングツールの重要性を過小評価すべきではない。優れた「電子書籍向け GarageBand」は、Xcode や Cocoa Touch というフレームワークが App Store に果たしたのと同じ役割を iBooks プラットフォームに対して果たし得るかもしれないのだ。

Never underestimate the importance of good authoring tools. A good “GarageBand for e-books” could do for the iBooks platform what Xcode and the Cocoa Touch frameworks have done for the App Store.

音声認識技術

しかしもっとある。Piper Jaffray のアナリスト Gene Munster は “let’s talk” という文言がかなりハッキリと音声認識を意味しているのではないかと考える。約１年半前に Siri を買収して以来アップルが開発していた音声認識の技術だ。６月の WWDC 2011 で発表されると期待したものもいたヤツだ。

But there’s more. Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster takes the “let’s talk” tag line as a not-so-subtle hint that Apple will finally be delivering the voice-recognition advances it’s been working on since it acquired Siri nearly 18 months ago — advances some expected to be announced at WWDC 2011 in June.

「これまでもアップルは招待状を使って発表内容のヒントを与えることがあった。今年の招待状の文言 ‘Let’s talk iPhone’ は単にことば遊びに過ぎないかもしれないが、あるいはまた iPhone の新しい音声認識について触れたものかもしれない」と Munster は顧客に向けたノートでいう。

“In the past,” Munster writes in a note to clients, “Apple has used its invitation to include cryptic hints as to what it will announce. The phrase on this year’s invite, ‘Let’s talk iPhone’ may be a simple play on words, but may also refer to new speech-based features for the iPhone.”

低価格 iPhone はない

もっと謎めいているのは単数の “iPhone” ということばを使い、電話アイコンに赤い数字の１が付けられていることだ。John Gruber はブログで「新しい iPhone はひとつだけといっているような気がする」と書いている。異なる考え方をたどったにしても Munster もまた同じ結論に達している。Munster 曰く、

Even more cryptic is the use of the singular “iPhone” and the red number 1 in the telephone icon. “Something tells me there’s only one new iPhone,” posted John Gruber on his Daring Fireball blog. Munster came to the same conclusion, although perhaps by a different route. He writes:

低価格 iPhone は期待できない。投資家の中にはアップルが低価格 iPhone を発表するのではないかと期待するものもいる。キャリアに対して現行の 600 ドル超の iPhone より安い 300 ドル以下の廉価版を売ることができれば、キャリアはより安価な、奨励金なしのモデルを提供でき、価格に敏感なマーケットにさらに浸透できるのではないかと。しかしかかるデバイスをアップルが１０月４日に発表することは期待できない。むしろアップルはメインのデバイス（iPhone 5）を継続し、キャリアは奨励金付き価格 199/299 ドルで販売するだろう。併せて前世代デバイス（iPhone 4 ないし iPhone 4S）は 99 ドルで販売するだろう。

We Do Not Expect a Low-End iPhone. Some investors are looking for Apple to announce a low-end iPhone that Apple could sell to carriers for less than $300 vs. the current carrier cost of over $600. This would enable carriers to offer affordable, unsubsidized iPhones and further penetrate more price-sensitive markets. However, we do not expect Apple to announce such a device on 10/4. Rather, we expect Apple to continue with a lead device (iPhone 5) that carriers sell subsidized for $199/ $299 along with a previous generation device (iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S) for $99.

アップルの秋のイベントに思う：John Gruber

１０月４日の秋のイベントを前に John Gruber が自分の考え方をまとめているのが興味深い。

１０月にずれ込んだのは

［iPhone 発表が９月でなく］１０月にずれ込んだのは、ハードウェアの製造、iOS 5、iCloud などすべての準備を整えるのに時間がかかったせいだと思う。（最近のベータ版は安定しており、もしそう望めば iOS 5 はすでに発表されていてもおかしくない。iOS 5 はなかなか調子がいい。）

[…] I think they went into October because it took longer to get everything in order: hardware production, iOS 5, iCloud. (Although I think iOS 5 could have been launched already, if they wanted to, based on the stability of the latest betas. It’s in good shape.)

iPod Touch だけでは足りない

アップルの秋の音楽イベントはミュージックプレーヤ iPod を売るためのものだ。そのビジネスに iPhone が食い込んでいる。iPod 部門は iPod Touch によって支えられている。そもそもそれって電話のついていない iPhone なのだ。アップルがオーディオ iPod を売るのをやめるとは思わないが、「新しい iPod が出た！」ではニュースメディアも大衆の気もそそれないということをアップルだけでなくみんなが知っている。新しく必要なのは新しい iOS デバイスなのだ。

Apple’s music events were about selling music-playing iPods. The iPhone is cannibalizing that business; their whole iPod division is propped up by the Touch, which is really just a phone-less iPhone. I don’t think they’re going to stop selling audio iPods, but everyone knows, including Apple, that neither the news media nor the masses can get it up for “new iPods” any more. New iOS devices are what we can get it up for.

２つの仮定

今年アップルが iPad を２回発表するかもしれないと２月に私が予想した［日本語：こちらの Update 参照］のはそういうわけだ。２月に iPad 2、９月には Retina ディスプレイ iPad 2 みたいな新しいものが出ると考えたわけだ。そう考えたのには２つの仮定があった。

That’s why I took a guess back in February that Apple might announce two rounds of iPad hardware this year: an iPad 2 in February, and then a new one in September — say, an iPad 2 with a retina display. That was based on two assumptions:

１）アップルは例年の例にならい、次世代 iPhone を６月の WWDC で発表するだろう。

1. Apple would release a next-generation iPhone at WWDC in June, as per its previous annual schedule.

２）もしアップルが秋のイベントで高い期待値を維持しようとすれば、今年の「iPhone」のスペックを踏襲する iPod Touch よりもっとエキサイティングな何かを発表する必要がある。

2. Apple would need something more exciting than an iPod Touch based on the same specs as this year’s new iPhone to announce in the fall, if they wanted to maintain a high level of anticipation for the fall event annually.

ビッグな iOS デバイス

私の第１の仮定は明らかに間違っていた。しかし第２の仮定は今でも正しいと思っている。秋の発表にはビッグな iOS デバイスがアップルとしては必要だという考えだ。そのためにもうひとつ iPad が出るというのが私の推測だった。しかし今年は新しい iPad は出ない。それでもビッグな iOS デバイスの発表はあるのだ。

My first assumption obviously was wrong. The second one I still think was right. Apple needs a big iOS device announcement for the fall, is what I was thinking, and another iPad was my best guess. There is no new iPad coming this year, but there is a big iOS device announcement.

より期待が増す状況

「iPhone 5」（その名前が何になろうと、またひとつだけでなく２つのモデルがあるとしても）を最初から秋に発表するつもりだったのか、それとも当初６月ないし７月を予定していたのがずれ込んだのか、アップルのトップ以外は誰も知らない。その理由が何だったにせよ、その間 iPhone の売れ行きが陰ることはなかった。それどころか、発表後３か月を経た古い「iPhone 5」のスペックをベースとする新 iPod Touch を待つだけだったかもしれないことを考えれば、次ぎに来るイベントにより期待が増すという状況が生まれているのだ。

No one outside Apple’s top ranks knows whether the iPhone 5 (or whatever they’re going to call it — or them, if there are two new models, not just one) was planned for a fall release all along, or whether it slipped and was originally intended for a June/July release. But whatever the reason, it hasn’t hurt iPhone sales in the interim, and it has created a situation where the company’s upcoming event is more anticipated than it would have been if we were only expecting a new iPod Touch based on specs from a three-month-old iPhone 5.

クリスマスはずらせない

年末商戦の製品ラインアップを決める秋のイベントはアップルにとって大変重要だ。カレンダーの任意の日付が来たからではなく、準備が整ったときに新製品を発表するのをアップルとしては好む。アップルが Macworld Expo キーノートをやめたのはそういうわけだった。今年ソフトウェアだけの WWDC キーノートを恐れずやったのもそういうわけだ。しかしクリスマスだけはずらすわけにはいかない。毎期アップルは記録的利潤と収入を更新している。しかしアップル製品がいちばんよく売れるのは年末商戦なのだ。目に見えなくても iOS デバイスの至る所に「クリスマスプレゼント」と書かれているのだ。

The fall event is important for Apple because it’s the one where they set their product lineup for the holiday quarter. The company prefers to announce new products simply when they’re ready, not when some arbitrary date on the calendar arrives. That’s why they stopped doing Macworld Expo keynotes. They showed this year that they’re not afraid to do a software-only WWDC keynote. But they can’t move Christmas. Apple is breaking profit and revenue records quarter after quarter. But Apple’s best-selling products sell best during the holiday quarter. iOS devices have “Christmas gift” written all over them.

ついにメディアイベントの日付に言及したのは AllThingsD［WSJ］だった。

１０月４日で決まり

１０月４日火曜日だ。

Tuesday, October 4.

事情に詳しいソース（複数）によれば、それが目下アップルが次回のビッグメディアイベントを計画している日だ。そこで技術の巨人は人気の次世代 iPhone を発表するだろう。

That’s the day Apple is currently expected to hold its next big media event, according to sources close to the situation, where the tech giant will unveil the next iteration of its popular iPhone.

前任者の Jobs のように、彼の右腕で後継者に選ばれた Cook が、今後のアップルのすべてのビッグメディアイベントのメインプレゼンターとなるだろう。

So, like his predecessor and as Jobs’s right-hand man and chosen successor, Cook is expected to be the main presenter at all big Apple media events going forward.

もちろん Jobs 自身が登場するかどうかも興味のあるところ。イベント直前の健康状態を見て決定されるだろうけれど・・・

What will be interesting to see, of course, is if Jobs himself will also make an appearance, which is something that is likely to be determined by his health in a decision that will made very close to the event.

開催場所は本社講堂 Apple Town Hall

アップルに近い筋（複数）によれば、１０月４日（AllThingsD が最初に報道）に予定されているイベントはクパティーノのアップル本社で行なわれるという。

Sources close to the company say the demonstration — currently scheduled for Tuesday October 4, a date first reported by AllThingsD — will be held at Apple’s campus in Cupertino, California.

どうして？ ハッキリは分からない。過去には Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) のような広い場所でビッグな新製品が発表されたものだが、今回は予定が定まらずにそんな場所が予約できなかったのかもしれない。あるいはまた新しく CEO になった Tim Cook の初めてのプレスイベントには打ち解けた場所がふさわしいと考えたのかもしれない。あるいはまた単に YBCA が予約済みだったせいかもしれない。理由がなんであれ、次世代 iPhone は１０月初めアップルの Town Hall 講堂でお披露目されることとなる。

Why? That’s not entirely clear. Perhaps the release date was too much of a moving target to risk booking a large space like Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA), which has hosted a number of big product unveils in the past. Perhaps, the company felt a more intimate venue was best for newly installed CEO Tim Cook’s first media event. Perhaps YBCA was simply already booked. Whatever the reason, the world will get it’s first look at the next iPhone at Apple’s Town Hall Auditorium in early October.
