Mac OS X 10.6.8 追加アップデートをして以来、いろいろと不具合が生じているが、どうやら原因の一部は Safari にもあるらしい。

「WebProcess」による Safari の不具合

Sa­fari はもう何年も私のデフォルトブラウザだった。他と比べてそのフレーミングやエルゴノミクス、ショートカットなどが気に入っていたからだ。しかし使うのを辞めざるを得なくなった。

For some years, Safari has been my default browser. I generally prefer its choices in framing and ergonomics and shortcuts over all others. But I’ve had to stop using it.

Safari の最近のバージョンは作り直されて、いくつかの作業を「WebProcess」と呼ばれるものに下請けさせている。これがうまくいっていないようなのだ。気付いた問題点は次のようなものだ。

In recent releases, Safari has been re-architected, with some of the work farmed out to a thing called “WebProcess”. This doesn’t seem to be working out that well. Specif­i­cally, I note that:

・タブからタブへの移動がのろく、システムの負担が増すといたずらに描き換えが起きる。

・Switch­ing from tab to tab is slug­gish, and when the sys­tem gets over­loaded, you get a lot of gra­tu­itous re­paints.

・システム CPU やメモリーを食っているものを読み出そうとすると WebProcess と Sa­fari の著しいプロセス処理［？］が起きる。

・The WebProcess and Sa­fari processes fea­ture promi­nently in read­outs of what’s con­sum­ing the sys­tem’s CPU and mem­ory.

・タブを数ダース開いたままに（あるものは数日の間、あるものは動的コードでいっぱいに）しておくと、システム全体がどんどん遅くなり、不安定になる。

・When you have a few dozen tabs open, some of them for days, and some of them being full of dy­namic code, the whole sys­tem gets in­creas­ingly slow and un­sta­ble.

たくさんのウインドウやタブを開いているとき

私も Safari for Mac について Bray と同じことを経験している。特にたくさんのウインドウやタブを開いているときのパフォーマンスが問題だ。まだ Safari から乗り換えるには至っていないが、あちこち代わりを探している。どちらかといえば Safari 5.1 は、Snow Leopard より Lion の方が悪くなるようだ。

I’m seeing the same things Bray is with Safari for Mac, particularly the performance problems when you have a lot of windows and tabs open. I’m not ready to switch yet, but I’m starting to shop around. And if anything, Safari 5.1 seems worse on Lion than it does on Snow Leopard.

Safari 5.1 のウインドウやタブを複数開いて、ブログを投稿している最中にビーチボールが回り始めると泣きたくなる。

これまではなかったのに、Mac OS X 10.6.8 追加アップデートをして以来の現象だ。

確かにググってみると、10.6.8 追加アップデートには WebProcess だけでなく（こちら、こちら）、いろいろと問題があるようだ（こちら、こちら）。

そもそも WebProcess って何なんだ？

WebProcess が原因だといわれてもどうしていいのか分からない。従前の Safari 5.0 に戻したものかどうか。

折角 Lion へアップグレードしようとしているのに悩ましい・・・

ノロノロの回避策はある

頼みもしないのに Safari 5 が勝手にページを再読み込みしてしまうことにイライラしていないだろうか？ それを回避する方法はあるのだ。それはそれでいくつか問題が生じるけれども。Safari のエクステンションがいくつか効かなくなるほか、新しいジェスチャーもいくつか機能しなくなる点だ。

Annoyed by Safari 5’s tendency to spontaneously reload pages when you didn’t ask it to? There’s a workaround for it, but it introduces a few problems of its own. Some Safari extensions will not work, and some of the new gestures won’t work either.

Safari の隠された「Debug」メニューを有効にして、デフォルトの「Use Multi-process Windows」オプションをオフにするだけでいい。こうして昨日 Safari を数時間使ってみた。Safari 5.1 の一般的なノロノロ状況（たくさんのウインドウやタブを開いているときの）は改善するようだ。 しかしこのモードでは、Safari エクステンションの大部分（少なくとも私が愛用しているもの）が使えなくなるので、私にとっては難がある。

What you do is enable Safari’s hidden Debug menu, and turn off the on-by-default “Use Multi-process Windows” option. I ran Safari like this for a few hours yesterday, and it seems to help with Safari 5.1’s general sluggishness (when you have a lot of windows and tabs open) too. But that fact that most Safari extensions (or at least the ones I care about) no longer work in this mode is a deal-breaker for me.

今日は「WebKit nightly builds」［日本語］へスイッチして試してみようと思っている。

そもそも「Multi-process Windows」とは何なのか。Sims の説明によれば・・・

ところで、「multi-process window」とはいったい何なのか？

So what is a “multi-process window” anyway?

Safari 5.1 の新しい機能のひとつは、基礎となっているエンジン「WebKit2」が新しいバージョンになったことだ。WebKit2 の新しいプロセスアーキテクチャでは、Safari はそれぞれ別の２つのプロセスから構成される。「UI process」（アプリケーションとしての Safari そのもので、アドレスバー、ツールバー、ブックマークバー、メニューなどを含む）と「web process」（実際のウェブページを読み込み、表示する独立のプロセス）の２つだ。

One of the new features in Safari 5.1 is a major new version of the underlying engine — WebKit2. Under WebKit2’s new process architecture, Safari consists of two separate processes — the “UI process” (the Safari application itself, including the address bar, toolbar, bookmarks bar, menus, etc.), and the “web process” (an independent process that loads and displays actual web pages).

multi-process window はアプリケーションのクラッシュ防止という観点から新たに採用されたらしいが、それがページの再読み込みに関係しているようだ。

それはさておき、早速 Sims の回避策にしたがってSafari の「Debug」メニューを表示させ［冒頭 Update 画像］、「Use Multi-process Windows」のオプションをオフにしてみた。

まだ数時間しか使っていないが、ページやタブを都合１００ほど開いてタブからタブへ移動してみても、再読み込みなしに移動できるようだ。

いつも使っていたエクステンションは使えなくなったが、ストレスが少なくなった分メリットが大きい。

HTML5 コーディングは大変

HTML5 が盛んに持てはやされるが、魅力的ウェブサイトを HTML5 でコーディングしようとするとウェブ開発者にとっては大変な作業になる。もうたくさんというわけで、２人のエンジニアがアップルを辞め、Y Combinator が資金を出すスタートアップ「Tumult」を設立した。ちゃんとした HTML5 オーサリングツールの恒常的不足を解決しようというのが設立目的だ。えっ、アドビの Creative Suite がウェブ開発のすべてだと思っていたの？

For all the talk of HTML5, web developers nowadays are still doomed to hard-coding pretty HTML5 websites. Deciding enough is enough, two engineers left Apple to found Tumult, a Y Combinator-funded startup. Their goal: Address a chronic shortage of decent HTML5 authoring tools. What, you didn’t think Adobe’s Creative Suite is the be all end all of web development?

Hype 誕生の理由

彼らの努力の結果が「Hype」だ。Flash プラグインを必要としないウェブで人目を引くアニメーションを作る際の苦痛をなくしようという全く新しい Mac アプリだ。共同設立者のひとりでアップルで Mail アプリのバックエンドを担当したエンジニアの Jonathan Deutsch は、Paul Hontz の The Startup Foundry インタビューでつぎのように語っている。

The result of their undertaking is Hype, a brand new Mac application taking the pain out of creating eye-catching animations on the web that don’t require the Flash plug-in. Jonathan Deutsch, one of the co-founders and former engineering manager for the Mail.app backend, explains in an interview with Paul Hontz’s The Startup Foundry:

「ヨーロッパ旅行から帰国したあと、様々の効果を使った美しいアルバムのような写真ウェブサイトを作ろうと考えました。しかし HTML5 でコーディングするのは悪夢のような経験でした。もっといい方法があるハズだ・・・そこから Hype のアイデアが生まれました。」

At one point after a trip to Europe, I wanted to make a photo website that would be as nice as a beautifully bound photo album, and use lots of effects. Coding this with HTML5 would have been a nightmare. There had to be a better way, and that’s how the idea for Hype was born.

アップルのエピソード

30 ドルの当初限定版は、いまや Mac App Store で最高の収益をあげるソフトだ。Deutsch はアップルで働く役得や興味深いエピソードについても語る。

The $30 download (limited introductory pricing) is already the top-grossing program on the Mac App Store. Deutsch also shared interesting anecdotes about the perks of working at Apple…

たとえば、新しく採用されたひとには新しいハードウェアが各人に付与される。（無料か割引価格かまでは語っていない。）また、アップルでよく聞かれる質問は「前にここで何度働いたことがある？」というもの。というのも、アップルは頭のいい連中をたくさん雇うが、そんな連中は途中で起業家精神に目覚め、辞めて自分のスタートアップを始めるからだ。スタートアップの多くは開始前に失敗するので、何人かは元の雇い主に戻ってくるというわけ。

For starters, each hire gets new hardware from the company (free of charge or discounted? He didn’t tell). He also tells that “at Apple the question is often ‘how many times have you worked here?’” because the company hires a lot of clever people who at some point discover the entrepreneur within and leave for their own startups. As many startups fail before even taking off, some of the people turn to their former employer.

WebKit レンダリングエンジンとしての HTML5

また Deutsch は、オープンソースの WebKit レンダリングエンジンに HTML5 を採用したり、Javascript を最適化させる仕事をアップルでしたことで高い評価を得ている。「HTML5 が新しいプラットフォームになったのはすばらしい。アップルは賞賛に値する」と彼はいう。モバイルブラウザの世界では WebKit が最も好まれるプラットフォームだ。一方デスクトップでは、片や WebKit、片やマイクロソフトや Mozilla 特有のレンダリングプラットフォームに細分化されていて、ウェブ開発を複雑化させる状況になっている。

He also credited HTML5 adoption and Javascript optimizations to the work Apple has done with the open-sourced WebKit rendering engine. “It’s great to see HTML5 as a new platform, and Apple deserves a lot of credit”, he said. WebKit is today the platform of choice for the vast majority of mobile browser, unlike on desktops where the fragmentation between WebKit on one side and Microsoft’s and Mozilla’s proprietary rendering platforms on the other complicates web development.

１０分でアップルについて話せといわれたら、それもオープンウェブとの関係についてといわれたら、どんな話をするだろうか。

John Gruber がそれをやっている。オライリーの「Web 2.0 Expo NY 2010」のプレゼンテーションだ。

「アップルが偉大なるウェブカンパニーであり、オープンウェブの提唱者であることを１０分で証明したい」ということばで始まったプレセンテーションが、成功しているかどうかはご自分の目でとくと確かめていただきたい。

ほんとのところ iPhone の実力はどの程度か：スマートフォンのブラウザ対決

iPhone の実力はスマートフォンの中でダントツなのか、それとも比較的優位にとどまるのか。

そんな疑問にヒントを与えてくれる興味深いテストがある。

iPhone 対抗策として RIM が満を持して投入した最新機種 BlackBerry Torch 9800 と iPhone、Android フォンのブラウザのスピード対決だ。

本当のところどうなのか

本当のところ新しい BlackBerry の Web ブラウザは、他社の最新機種のそれと比べてどうなのだろうか。自分でもその答えが知りたくて、BlackBerry Torch 9800、アップルの iPhone 4、それに最新の Android ベースのサムスン Captivate のブラウザ対決を行なった。Dieter の手を借りてそれぞれキャッシュを消去、３機種を一緒に並べて比較した。・・・

But how does the new BlackBerry web browser stack up to the latest and greatest devices from the competition? I wanted to know the answer to that myself, so with some help from Dieter we cleared the cache on the BlackBerry Torch 9800, Apple iPhone 4 and new Android-based Samsung Captivate and put the devices head to head to head in a one take, no messing around web browser shootout. […]

いい線いってる

さて結果はどうだったか？ うん、いいニュースと悪いニュースが半々だ。まず悪いニュースから。われわれのささやかなテストでは、BlackBerry Torch 9800 は iPhone 4 や Captivate に対して一勝もあげることができなかった。しかし、いい方のニュースは、なかなかいい線をいって、ひどくやられたという感じではなかったことだ。たった数秒の差で、古い BlackBerry のネイティブなブラウザに比べると大進歩だと思う。対決戦の結果を比較して、Dieter と私は次のような結論に達した。敵わなかった原因の大半はブラウザではなく、Torch の 624MHz プロセッサにあるのではないかということだ。iPhone 4 や Captivate に同じ 624MHz プロセッサを入れたら、たぶんやっつけることができたのではないか。あるいは Torch のプロセッサパワーを高めれば、競合機種に負けず劣らずだったのではないか、と。結論として、BlackBerry のブラウザは大幅に強化され、RIM が次世代ハードウェアをアップグレードすればスピードやパフォーマンスがより強力になる道が開けたのだといえる。あなた自身が機種対決を試みることはないだろうが、BlackBerry ブラウジングはたっぷり楽しめるだろう。

The results? Well… it’s a good news bads new thing. The bad news: in our little test the BlackBerry Torch 9800 couldn’t pull off even one victory against the iPhone 4 and Captivate. The good news is it held in there pretty darn well – close enough that I don’t think you’ll feel hard done. It’s a matter of a few seconds, which is a massive step forward from our old native BlackBerry web browser. Reflecting on the results post shootout, Dieter and I both agreed this is probably an area where the Torch’s 624MHz processor could be the culprit more than the web browser itself. If you put the same 624MHz into the iPhone 4 or Captivate the Torch would probably Torch them. Conversely, if you upped the processing power in the Torch it could probably match or better the competition as well. Final conclusion: it’s a massive upgrade to the BlackBerry web browser and it paves the way for even more speed and performance as we see RIM move up to their next generation of hardware. In the meantime, as long as you’re not doing head to head shootouts, you’ll now enjoy browsing on your BlackBerry a lot.
