Snow Leopard のセキュリティアップデートで PowerPC ソフトが動かなくなる

Snow Leopard のセキュリティアップデート

Snow Leopard のための個別のセキュリティアップデート「Security Update 2012-001」をダウンロードすると、Rosetta に依存している PowerPC ベースのソフトが壊れる現象が出ているという複数の苦情がある。Eudora 6、Acrobat Pro 7、Quicken 2007、Office 2004 などのソフトがクラッシュ、フリーズ、ないしは印刷不能などの予期せぬ振る舞いを示すという。

The separate Security Update 2012-001 download for Snow Leopard users is breaking apps that depend on Rosetta, according to complaints. Rosetta allows PowerPC-based apps to operate within Snow Leopard. Programs such as Eudora 6, Acrobat Pro 7, Quicken 2007, and Office 2004 will reportedly crash, freeze, or exhibit other unexpected behavior, such as failing to print documents.

当面の対策

アップルはこの問題について認識しているといわれるが、パッチを当てるのがいつになるかは不明。それまでの間ソフトを使う必要がある場合は２つのオプションしかない。最も極端なオプションは Snow Leopard を再インストールして v10.6.8 にアップデートするが Security Update 2012-001 は行なわないというもの。もうひとつは非公式ソフト「RosettaFix」を使ってアップデートした 2012-001 ファイルを元のバージョンに戻すもの。しかしこれでも Eudora 6、Acrobat 7、Photoshop CS2、AppleWorks 6 のようなソフトには依然として不具合が残るという。

Apple is said to be aware of the issue, but there is no timeline on a patch. People who need apps working earlier have two options, the most extreme of these being reinstalling Snow Leopard and updating to v10.6.8 while rejecting Security Update 2012-001. An unofficial app called RosettaFix may solve some problems by replacing files updated by 2012-001 with previous versions, but glitches persist in apps like Eudora 6, Acrobat 7, Photoshop CS2, and AppleWorks 6.

古きものは去れ

アップルは PowerPC のサポートから少しずつ手を引いている。PowerPC チップ搭載 Mac の最後の OS X バージョンが Leopard だった。Snow Leopard では Rosetta がデフォルトのインストールから外された。Lion では PowerPC ソフトのサポートが完全に終わっている。

Apple has gradually drifted away from PowerPC support. Leopard was the last version of OS X to run on Macs with PowerPC chips, and in Snow Leopard, Rosetta was left out of default installations. Lion has no support for PowerPC apps whatsoever.

いつもは OS X のアップデートには慎重で、周回遅れで様子を見ながら行なっているのだが、今回は誘惑に負けてしまった。

「iBooks Author」がなんとも輝いて見えたのだ。

矢も楯もたまらず急遽 Lion へアップデート、iBooks Author をダウンロードしたのだが・・・

結果は、シロウトには思うようには使いこなせず、やっぱり出版業のプロが使うソフトは違うと変に納得するハメになっている。

問題はその後・・・

Snow Leopard 時代にはなかったいくつもの不具合に遭遇することとなった。

その最たるものは Excel が使えなくなったことだ。筆者の Excel、Word とも「Office 2004」時代のものだ。

とりあえず iWork の Numbers を使わざるを得なくなったが、古い書類がダブルクリックで開けず、その都度アイコンを Numbers にドラッグ＆ドロップしなければならないので煩わしいことおびただしい。

おまけに書類を開いた感じがどうもいまひとつで、これまでのサクサク感がなくなったように思えてこれまたつらい。

もう一度 Snow Leopard へ戻すことを検討しようかと考えていた矢先に MacNN のこの記事に出会った。

進むに進めず戻るに戻れない、なんとも情けない状態になっている・・・

読者の Yoshimoto 氏、paprica 氏からのご教示。

こうすれば Excel の古い書類がダブルクリックで自動的に開ける。

・古い書類をクリックして［ファイル］→［情報を見る］

・［このアプリケーションで開く：］項目で Numbers をデフォルトにして［すべてを変更…］を押す

たしかにこれで Excel の古い書類がすべてダブルクリックで Numbers で自動的に開けるようになりました。

実は Numbers を使うのは今回が初めてだったのですが、こんなに簡単だったのですね。

これって Lion 以前の話で、いかにカジュアルユーザーとはいえこんなことも知らずにきたのですから、いやあお恥ずかしい・・・

AppleWorks の古い書類も Pages で自動的に開けることを「発見」しました。

セキュリティアップデート version 1.1

Snow Leopard の最新のセキュリティアップデートがもたらしたヒドい失敗を受けて、さっそくアップルは事態をコントロールした。昨金曜日、アップルは Snow Leopard Mac のために「Security Update 2012-001, version 1.1」をリリースした。

Suffering from bizarre errors related to the latest Snow Leopard security update? Apple’s already on top of things. On Friday, the company released Security Update 2012-001, version 1.1, for Snow Leopard Macs.

アップルはいつものように「Mac OS X のセキュリティを高めるために全てのユーザーがアップデートすることを推奨する」としかいっていないが、ラスベガスの賭け流にいえば、このアップデートはとんでもない副作用をもたらした水曜日の Security Updated 2012-001 のバージョン 1.0 と差し替えるためのものだ。

In its usual fashion, Apple only says that the update is “recommended for all users and improves the security of Mac OS X.” But if we had to place a wager, Vegas-style, we’d guess that the update in question has been issued to replace version 1.0 of Security Updated 2012-001, released on Wednesday, which had some nasty side effects.

先に Snow Leopard のセキュリティアップデートを行なった多くのユーザーが、PowerPC Mac 用のソフトが使えなくなったことに気づいた。アップデートによって Rosetta 技術に致命的障害が引き起こされたためだ。

Many users who applied the security update on their Snow Leopard found they could no longer use applications designed for PowerPC-based Macs, thanks to the fact that the update wreaked havoc on files crucial to Apple’s Rosetta technology.

今回のバグフィックスによって問題は解決されたかに見える。しかし我々自身はまだ確認していない。読者の問題が解決したようならその旨教えて欲しい。

It seems likely that the update fixes that problem, although we haven’t yet confirmed it for ourselves. If the update fixes issues for you, let us know in the comments below.

しかしながら、Lion への最新のアップデートMac OS X 10.7.3 の問題、すなわち一部ユーザーが起動時や妙な CUI エラーに遭遇する問題が解決したかどうかは未だ不明だ。

There’s no sign, however, of an update to fix the issues with the latest Lion update, Mac OS X 10.7.3, which saw some users having problems launching applications or experiencing weird textures.

「Security Update 2012-001 version 1.1」は Software Update で行なえるが、アップルのダウンロードサイトにはこの原稿の時点ではまだ掲載されていない。

Security Update 2012-001 version 1.1 is available via Software Update, but as of this writing was not on Apple’s support downloads site.

バグフィックスの対応が早かったことは評価できるが、何が問題で何が解決されたのかよく分からないところに不安が残る。

これまでアップルのアップデートといえば、ほとんど盲目的に即実行してきたが、これからはひと呼吸おいて様子を見た方がいいのかもしれない・・・

WebProcess って何だ？

Mac OS X 10.6.8 追加アップデートをして以来、いろいろと不具合が生じているが、どうやら原因の一部は Safari にもあるらしい。

「WebProcess」による Safari の不具合

Sa­fari はもう何年も私のデフォルトブラウザだった。他と比べてそのフレーミングやエルゴノミクス、ショートカットなどが気に入っていたからだ。しかし使うのを辞めざるを得なくなった。

For some years, Safari has been my default browser. I generally prefer its choices in framing and ergonomics and shortcuts over all others. But I’ve had to stop using it.

Safari の最近のバージョンは作り直されて、いくつかの作業を「WebProcess」と呼ばれるものに下請けさせている。これがうまくいっていないようなのだ。気付いた問題点は次のようなものだ。

In recent releases, Safari has been re-architected, with some of the work farmed out to a thing called “WebProcess”. This doesn’t seem to be working out that well. Specif­i­cally, I note that:

・タブからタブへの移動がのろく、システムの負担が増すといたずらに描き換えが起きる。

・Switch­ing from tab to tab is slug­gish, and when the sys­tem gets over­loaded, you get a lot of gra­tu­itous re­paints.

・システム CPU やメモリーを食っているものを読み出そうとすると WebProcess と Sa­fari の著しいプロセス処理［？］が起きる。

・The WebProcess and Sa­fari processes fea­ture promi­nently in read­outs of what’s con­sum­ing the sys­tem’s CPU and mem­ory.

・タブを数ダース開いたままに（あるものは数日の間、あるものは動的コードでいっぱいに）しておくと、システム全体がどんどん遅くなり、不安定になる。

・When you have a few dozen tabs open, some of them for days, and some of them being full of dy­namic code, the whole sys­tem gets in­creas­ingly slow and un­sta­ble.

たくさんのウインドウやタブを開いているとき

私も Safari for Mac について Bray と同じことを経験している。特にたくさんのウインドウやタブを開いているときのパフォーマンスが問題だ。まだ Safari から乗り換えるには至っていないが、あちこち代わりを探している。どちらかといえば Safari 5.1 は、Snow Leopard より Lion の方が悪くなるようだ。

I’m seeing the same things Bray is with Safari for Mac, particularly the performance problems when you have a lot of windows and tabs open. I’m not ready to switch yet, but I’m starting to shop around. And if anything, Safari 5.1 seems worse on Lion than it does on Snow Leopard.

Safari 5.1 のウインドウやタブを複数開いて、ブログを投稿している最中にビーチボールが回り始めると泣きたくなる。

これまではなかったのに、Mac OS X 10.6.8 追加アップデートをして以来の現象だ。

確かにググってみると、10.6.8 追加アップデートには WebProcess だけでなく（こちら、こちら）、いろいろと問題があるようだ（こちら、こちら）。

そもそも WebProcess って何なんだ？

WebProcess が原因だといわれてもどうしていいのか分からない。従前の Safari 5.0 に戻したものかどうか。

折角 Lion へアップグレードしようとしているのに悩ましい・・・

ノロノロの回避策はある

頼みもしないのに Safari 5 が勝手にページを再読み込みしてしまうことにイライラしていないだろうか？ それを回避する方法はあるのだ。それはそれでいくつか問題が生じるけれども。Safari のエクステンションがいくつか効かなくなるほか、新しいジェスチャーもいくつか機能しなくなる点だ。

Annoyed by Safari 5’s tendency to spontaneously reload pages when you didn’t ask it to? There’s a workaround for it, but it introduces a few problems of its own. Some Safari extensions will not work, and some of the new gestures won’t work either.

Safari の隠された「Debug」メニューを有効にして、デフォルトの「Use Multi-process Windows」オプションをオフにするだけでいい。こうして昨日 Safari を数時間使ってみた。Safari 5.1 の一般的なノロノロ状況（たくさんのウインドウやタブを開いているときの）は改善するようだ。 しかしこのモードでは、Safari エクステンションの大部分（少なくとも私が愛用しているもの）が使えなくなるので、私にとっては難がある。

What you do is enable Safari’s hidden Debug menu, and turn off the on-by-default “Use Multi-process Windows” option. I ran Safari like this for a few hours yesterday, and it seems to help with Safari 5.1’s general sluggishness (when you have a lot of windows and tabs open) too. But that fact that most Safari extensions (or at least the ones I care about) no longer work in this mode is a deal-breaker for me.

今日は「WebKit nightly builds」［日本語］へスイッチして試してみようと思っている。

そもそも「Multi-process Windows」とは何なのか。Sims の説明によれば・・・

ところで、「multi-process window」とはいったい何なのか？

So what is a “multi-process window” anyway?

Safari 5.1 の新しい機能のひとつは、基礎となっているエンジン「WebKit2」が新しいバージョンになったことだ。WebKit2 の新しいプロセスアーキテクチャでは、Safari はそれぞれ別の２つのプロセスから構成される。「UI process」（アプリケーションとしての Safari そのもので、アドレスバー、ツールバー、ブックマークバー、メニューなどを含む）と「web process」（実際のウェブページを読み込み、表示する独立のプロセス）の２つだ。

One of the new features in Safari 5.1 is a major new version of the underlying engine — WebKit2. Under WebKit2’s new process architecture, Safari consists of two separate processes — the “UI process” (the Safari application itself, including the address bar, toolbar, bookmarks bar, menus, etc.), and the “web process” (an independent process that loads and displays actual web pages).

multi-process window はアプリケーションのクラッシュ防止という観点から新たに採用されたらしいが、それがページの再読み込みに関係しているようだ。

それはさておき、早速 Sims の回避策にしたがってSafari の「Debug」メニューを表示させ［冒頭 Update 画像］、「Use Multi-process Windows」のオプションをオフにしてみた。

まだ数時間しか使っていないが、ページやタブを都合１００ほど開いてタブからタブへ移動してみても、再読み込みなしに移動できるようだ。

いつも使っていたエクステンションは使えなくなったが、ストレスが少なくなった分メリットが大きい。

なぜ今の時期に

Mac ソフトウェアエンジニアリングの上級副社長 Bertrand Serlet がアップルを去る。この１０年間彼は Mac OS X の何たるかを定義し、それを見直し、繰り返しアップデートしてきた。しかし今の時期に去るのはなぜか？

So Bertrand Serlet, senior vice president of Mac software engineering and the guy who spent the past decade defining, redefining and iterating Mac OS X, is leaving Apple. Why now?

計画的禅譲

アップルの公式説明は「彼が製品よりサイエンスにより注力したいから」というものだ。Serlet のマッドサイエンティスト的雰囲気や Xerox PARC および NeXT での経歴を考えればもっともらしく聞こえる。しかし OS X の次期バージョン Lion の登場を控えているこの時期の発表というタイミングはいささか妙に思える。しかしほんとのことをいえば、これは計画的禅譲なのだ。

The party line says he’s decided “to focus less on products and more on science.” That’s a plausible explanation, given Serlet’s mad scientist airs and background, which includes stints at Xerox PARC and NeXT. And while the timing of the announcement might seem odd–Apple is ramping up for the release of Lion, the next iteration of OS X–the truth of the matter is that this is a planned transition.

前触れはあった

昨年 Serlet の代わりに Craig Federighi が Lion のプレビューデモをやったのにはわけがある。Serlet が最近アップル株を手放したのにもわけがある。二人ともこの日のために準備していたのだ。複数の情報筋によれば、アップルにとって OS X の重要性がが小さくなったとか、これからの戦略について見解の相違があったからということではまったくない。

There’s a reason Craig Federighi, who is to take over Serlet’s role, handled demo duties for Apple’s Lion preview demo last year (see video below). And there’s a reason Serlet has been selling off Apple shares recently. They’ve been preparing for this day, which sources tell me is not at all the result of a spat over differences in strategic direction or the diminishment of OS X’s importance to Apple.

単なる役員交代

「とげとげしい関係なんてない」とアップルに近い情報筋のひとりは語る。「Bertrand はアップルを去る時期がきたと考え、Avie Tevanian（ソフトウェアエンジニアリングの前上級副社長）が彼に譲ったように、今度は彼が Craig に譲るだけの話だ。単なる役員交代というわけだ。」

“There’s no acrimony there,” one source close to the company told me. “Bertrand’s just decided it’s his time to move on. Avie (Tevanian, former senior vice president of software engineering) handed off to him and now he’s handing off to Craig. It’s just a changing of the guard.”

金字塔としての Lion

いいかえれば、ある意味 OS X が iOS に取り込まれ、スターとしての Serlet の地位に陰りが出始めたから去るのではない。彼が去るのは今がその時期であり、アップルにおける彼のレガシーの金字塔として Lion がふさわしいと考えるからこそ去るのだ。

In other words, Serlet isn’t leaving because because Lion heralds some subsuming of OS X to iOS and the setting of his star at Apple. He’s leaving because he feels it’s time and likely because Lion seems a perfect monument to his legacy at Apple.

Jobs との確執とは無関係という John Paczkowski の指摘はそのとおりかもしれない。

そうだとしても、ひとつの時代の終わりという感じは否めない。

NeXT から来たベテラントリオ（Avads “Avie” Tevanian、Bertrand Serlet、Scott Forstall の３人組）の上にも確実に時は過ぎているようだ。

Serlet がウインドウズ Vista を皮肉るビデオを改めて見ると、なかなかおもしろい人物だったように思われる。

最も重要なボス

アップルで働いた数年間、Bertrand は最も重要なボスだった。その後 2003 年にクビになった。多分彼のさしがねだろう。

For several years Bertrand was the most important manager in my life at Apple, before I was laid off in 2003, probably as a result of a decision he made.

目を白黒させた

Bertrand の最初の印象といえば、彼がしゃべるたび頭痛がしたことだ。98〜99 年頃だったと思うが、彼は次期 Mac OS はハードディスクを持たないコンピュータでも動くシンクライアント OS［thin client OS］になるだろうという話をしたものだ。みんなは目を白黒させた。

My first observation about him was that every time I had to hear him talk, I got a headache. That was back when he was telling us (around ’98-’99, maybe) that the next Mac OS was likely to be a thin client OS on a computer that had no hard disk. We rolled our eyes.

カルチャー戦争真っ最中

その後間もなく、経験を積んだアップルのソフトウェアエンジニアを前にして、間違いを犯さないでコードをカット＆ペーストする方法について講義してくれたものだ。自分のエンジニアとしての全キャリアの中で、このときほどバカにされたと感じたことはなかった。NeXT とアップルのカルチャー戦争は真っ盛りだっだ。

Pretty soon he was standing up in front of seasoned Apple software engineers and lecturing us on how not to make mistakes when cutting and pasting code. I said at that time that I had never felt so thoroughly disrespected as an engineer in my entire career. The NeXT/Apple culture wars were at their height.

嫌なヤツ

［その後 Bertrand とは直接に話をするのを避けるようになった。］いいたいことは、自分の目から見て、彼が一緒に仕事することなど考えられない嫌なヤツに思えたことだ。OS X の仕事を数年したが、2003 年にはクビになった。・・・

Snow Leopard

その後、Snow Leopard のことを耳にしたときだった、Bertrand がやろうとしていたのはこれだったのかとやっと分かった。システムが本来必要とするもの（ユーザー機能ではなく）をリリースすることだ。Steve Jobs を納得させてその気にさせるには大論争が必要だったに違いない。ともかく Jobs は納得した。Snow Leopard の内部に隠された Grand Central Dispatch のような機能こそ、OS やアプリケーションのフレームワークにとって大きな飛躍だった。その時になって Bertrand に対して大きな敬意を感じたものだ。

And then, when I started hearing about Snow Leopard, I realized that this was what Bertrand had been aiming at all along: the release where the system — not the user features — really got what it needed. I suspect he had to win a big argument with Steve Jobs to get to that point. And he got there. Snow Leopard’s under-the-hood features, such as Grand Central Dispatch, were huge leaps forward in operating system and application frameworks technology. I gained a great deal of respect for Bertrand at that point.

今考えれば・・・

今になってみれば、素晴しい技術的洞察力をもちながら、NeXT より大きなグループを管理した経験をほとんど持たない比較的若い青年が、アップルと NeXT の陰謀と裏切りの中で、まだ不完全なビジョンを抱えて必死になっていたのだと思う。ほとんど知識のないアップルという会社にとって、なんとか真に重要な OS 技術をもたらそうとして・・・

With hindsight, I can look back at a relatively young man with brilliant technical insight and very little experience managing a group larger than the one at NeXT, clambering upward through the thicket of Apple/NeXT intrigues and of half-baked visions for Apple — a company he knew very little about — to find his way to do something really significant for OS technology at Apple.

事情に詳しい情報筋によると、TUAW の話は細部まで正しいそうだ。Snow Leopard は来年１月の Macworld に向けて鋭意準備中であり、OS について特段大きな変化はないという。専らパフォーマンスに注目、スピードアップと安定性強化に注力するという。アップルはこのところ（そして将来においても）より小型で、より薄く、より持ち運び可能なデバイスに焦点を絞っていることを考えると、これは実にピッタリの動きだ。MacBook Air や iPhone、iPod touch にしても、また未発表の秘密のデバイスにしても、バッテリー持続時間をもっとのばすことが必須だ。まさにこの点こそ、この数年間で他社に差をつけたいとアップルが考えているところなのだ。なお、Snow Leopard が今年の WWDC で発表されるかどうかについては、我々の情報筋は確証を持っていない。

People familiar with the situation have confirmed to us that TUAW’s details are true—Snow Leopard is currently on track to come out during next January’s Macworld, and it will not contain major OS changes. Instead, the release is heavily focused on performance and nailing down speed and stability. With Apple’s current (and future) focus on smaller, thinner, and more mobile devices, this move makes perfect sense. Things like the MacBook Air, iPhone, iPod touch, and other mysterious devices that have yet to be announced need better performance for better battery life, and that’s definitely something Apple wants to excel at in the years to come. Our sources did not note whether Apple planned to discuss Snow Leopard at this year’s WWDC.

A big part of the effort, from what I’m hearing, is unifying the various branches of OS X at Apple: Mac OS X, iPhone OS, Apple TV, etc.

ピッタリの名前

この新しい OS の名前「Snow Leopard」は実に打ってつけだ。Leopard に似てはいるがもっとクールで、特定の環境に適応している。Steve Jobs がこの OS について話すとき、バーション番号をいわずに［Snow Leopard という］名前だけで呼んでも驚きはしないだろう。

But the name of this new release, which I’ve heard from several sources, fits perfectly: Snow Leopard. Like Leopard, but cooler, and adapted for a specific environment. I wouldn’t be surprised if Steve Jobs doesn’t even mention the number 10.6, and refers to the OS only by name.

モスコーニセンターの内部写真もぼつぼつウェブに出始めた。

CrunchGear が載せた会場のバナー写真によれば、どうやら今後は「OS X Leopard」、「OS X iPhone」と呼ぶことになるらしい。

だとすると、新しい OS の登場はますます本当らしく思えてくる。

WWDC のサプライズは iPhone だけではないということか・・・
