Ars Technica: “Ars reviews iOS 4: what’s new, notable, and what needs work” by Jacqui Cheng and Clint Ecker: 21 June 2010
The most exciting part about iOS 4 is really what third-party developers will do with the 1,500 new APIs. After all, the iPhone experience has become one that is almost defined by its apps, and Apple has opened up a new world of possibilities with its latest API offerings. As we go into the second half of 2010, we’re sure to see plenty of new apps that do creative things with Game Center, multitasking capabilities, the camera, and more.

Macworld: “Apple iOS 4 Smartphone Review” by Dan Moren: 21 June 2010
While formal benchmarking is tricky on the iPhone, my initial impression of iOS 4 on my iPhone 3GS is that it’s quite snappy — more so than version 3.1.3. The OS as a whole seems more responsive, but there are a couple of places where speed improvements are pronounced: in general, the Camera app running on an iPhone 3GS seems far zippier now than previously. Pictures get taken almost instantaneously, and I didn’t notice any of the sluggishness that has occasionally plagued iPhone 3.0.

Macworld: “Hands on with iOS 4 folders” by Dan Frakes: 22 June 2010
This example also illustrates another folder advantage: condensing your most frequently used apps into just one or two screens. Instead of having to swipe across five or six (or more) Home screens, accessing your favorite apps is now a matter of locating the appropriate folder on just one or two screens and then launching the desired app. Since I started using folders extensively, I’ve found that, whereas I used to regularly access nearly every one of my iPhone’s 11 visible screens, I’m now using mainly the first few.

furbo.org: “iPhone multitasking” by Craig Hockenberry: 21 June 2010
This sleight of hand makes it feel like you’re running many more applications than you actually are. It also explains how your iPhone can continue to have great battery life while you interact with many different apps. Most of your apps will be frozen and not using power: only the app on your screen is active. And even with audio, phone or GPS apps that are running in the background, you won’t be using more than one of those at a time (go ahead and try to listen to Pandora and the iPod apps at the same time!)

nikf.org: “8 Subtle Changes You May (Or May Not) Notice in iOS 4” by Nik Fletcher: 21 June 2010
Every time Apple releases a new OS update, be it on the Mac or iPhone, there’s a bucketload of smaller – lesser-spotted – changes that appear in the system. iOS 4 very much continues this trend, so whilst you’re busy perusing the new update today here’s 8 little changes you may (or may not) spot.

SuperSite for Windows: “Apple iOS 4” by Paul Thurrott: 21 June 2010
Apple’s fourth generation mobile operating system, renamed just before launch from iPhone OS 4 to iOS 4, is the standard by which all other mobile systems must be judged. And it’s a high bar: The iOS has matured from an amazing but deeply flawed platform to one that is both easy to use and achingly powerful. It’s so good, in fact, that’s it’s taken the rest of the mobile device industry years to catch up. (Only Google’s Android seems to have surpassed iOS in any meaningful way so far.)

Windows Phone Secrets: “Windows Phone vs. the world, part 1: Developers” by Paul Thurrott: 20 June 2010
To those who would argue that this is early days and that Microsoft’s documentation can only catch up, I’d say, wake up. When the iPhone debuted three years ago, it was a bolt of lightning in what was then a very immature smart phone world. Three years later, everything has changed, and the market in which Windows Phone will compete is vastly different. In 2010, it is not enough for Microsoft to provide what Apple had in 2007, and this is as true with developer tools and documentation as it is with anything else. Microsoft isn’t competing with the Apple of three years ago.
What we need, then, is not a trickle, but a fire hose. We need what Apple offers iOS developers. That’s the bar.

[iOS 4 Performance on iPhone 3G (Camera and Settings) – Flickr]
[iOS 4 Performance on iPhone 3G (Camera and Settings) – YouTube]

Oh boy. This is one laggy beast. iOS 4 is slow in most things when compared to OS 3.1.3 on an iPhone 3G (non-jailbroken). Although I haven’t noticed that much of a difference in performance as evident from the video, it makes one wonder whether the upgrade to iOS 4 is really worth it or not. You be the judge:
