ほんとに１０インチなのだろうか

［スクリーンサイズは７インチ？１０インチ？］

筆者にとって iPhone は、机のマックから離れている間欠かせない存在だ。

胸のポケットに放り込んでおけば重さも大きさも気にならず、電車の中でもベッドの中でもいつでもチェックできる。

唯一の欠点は文字が小さいこと。とみに視力の衰えた筆者にとって iPhone に最適化したサイトは拷問だ。

せめて iPhone の倍の大きさのウェブ端末があればというのが筆者の切なる願い。

倍の大きさ（７インチ）なら、ほぼ洋書のペーパーバックの大きさ。これなら上着のポケットにいれて何処へでも持ち運べる。

しかしウワサのアップルタブレットはどれも１０インチのものばかり。１０インチでは上着のポケットに放り込むというわけにはいかない。

アップルタブレットはほんとに１０インチなのだろうか。

そんなときに興味深い記事をみつけた。iPod や iPhone の分解・修理に通じた Aaron Vronko［Rapid Repair CEO］のインタビューだ。

Vronko によれば、ウワサと違って最初にデビューするタブレットは１０インチではないというのだ。

３月に間に合うのは７インチだけ

Vronko：７インチと１０インチの２種類のスクリーンサイズがあるというウワサがいろんなソースからひっきりなしに出てくる。１０インチは十分な量手に入れることが不可能なこと、主要パーツの生産が間に合わないことから今年の前半に間に合うかどうか疑わしい。一方７インチならウワサの３月ないしは第２四半期初頭の出荷に間に合うだろう。

Vronko: There has been a steady stream of rumors from various sources indicating both a 7-inch and a 10-inch screen size. While the 10-inch is doubtful for the first half of this year due to insufficient availability or production of key components, a 7-inch could be ready by the rumored March or early second quarter ship dates.

バッテリーの制約からも７インチだ

７インチタブレットのスクリーン面積は iPhone の４倍だ。これまでのモバイル用 LCD ディスプレイは他の部品よりはるかに電力を消費し、バッテリーの持ちが非常に悪くなる。アップルの設計上の制約から考えればビデオでせいぜい５時間だろう。

A 7-inch tablet would have four times the screen area of an iPhone. A conventional mobile LCD display easily consumes more power than any other component of the device and would severely hamper battery life-maybe only five hours of video-given Apple’s preferred design constraints.

バッテリーの改善

iPhone で問題となったバッテリー問題を解決するため、アップルとしてはどうのような手を打つか？

How can Apple get around the battery life issues that have plagued the iPhone?

OLED の採用

Vronko：アップルは Microsoft、Samsung、HTC がやったように７インチタブレットでは AM OLED［active-matrix organic light-emitting diode：アクティブマトリックス 有機 EL］を用いることによって消費電力を抑えようとするだろう。使い方にもよるがこれによってバッテリーの持続時間は 40% から 75% 程度のびるだろう。

Vronko: Look for Apple to follow Microsoft, Samsung and HTC in using an AM OLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) display in their 7-inch tablet because of its ability to reduce power consumption. This could extend the battery life anywhere from 40 percent to 75 percent, depending on your usage.

ハイブリッド技術も

もう一つの方法としては、Pixel Qi が開発したハイブリッド技術がある。アマゾンの Kindle によって有名となった e-Paper 技術と組み合わせることによって従来型のほとんどの LCD スクリーンに応用することができる。

The other good option would be a new hybrid technology, which has been developed by Pixel Qi. The technology works by stacking e-Paper technology made famous by the Amazon Kindle onto a mostly conventional LCD screen.

ARM の Cortex-A9

これまでもたびたびウワサにのぼり、アップル幹部からほのめかされたこともあるように、PA Semi チームが SoC［System-on-a-Chip］プロセッサを開発中だ。アップルの未来のモバイル製品の中核にするためだ。７インチタブレットの SoC プラットフォームは、高速、低消費電力設計の最新の ARM CPU である Cortex-A9 を搭載することになるだろう。

It has been long speculated and even hinted at by company representatives that the PA Semi team is working on a System-on-a-Chip (SoC) application processor to serve as the heart of future Apple mobile devices. Expect the SoC platform in a 7-inch tablet to include twin CPUs of ARM’s latest high-speed and power saving design, the Cortex-A9.

強力なグラフィックスチップ

またタブレットは、ディスプレイの百万ピクセルを稼働し、3D ゲームやアプリケーションを問題なく処理するため非常に強力なグラフィックスの処理能力を必要とする。
モービル GPU 設計会社 Imagination Technology の長期ライセンスを最近取得したので、最新の PowerVR SGX545（あるいは SGX540）を採用することとなるだろう。

The device will also need significantly improved graphics processing power to drive up to a million pixels in the display and still render 3D games and applications without problems. After recently buying a long-term design license with mobile GPU designer Imagination Technology, expect this to be the recently unveiled PowerVR SGX545 or possibly SGX540.

iPhone 3GS の２〜３倍

これらデューアル CPU や、コアのアップグレード、設計改良によって、電力消費の効率はそのままでも、タブレットは最新の iPhone 3GS の２倍から３倍の能力を持つだろう。これらすべてが相まってバッテリ時間も延びるだろう。

The dual CPUs, other upgraded cores and improved design could give the tablet two to three times more horsepower than last summer’s iPhone 3GS, while keeping effective power consumption of the core system nearly unchanged. All of this contributes to longer battery life.

ずっと気に懸かっている問題だが、なにせ７インチは少数派だ。

しかし一歩一歩物事をすすめていくアップルのやり方をみれば、決してあり得ないことではない。

デスクトップも視野に入れながら、iPhone/iPod touch（3.5 インチ）と MacBook（１３インチ）の間を、まず７インチから段階的に埋めていくというのはそれなりに説得力もあるような気がするのだが・・・

「キャンバス」という名前はどうか？

［最新作を見にきて］

John Gruber がおもしろい指摘をしている。

ペンキをまき散らした招待状のデザインを見て、Cabel Sasser は月曜日に次のようにつぶやいた。そして Daring Fireball の少なからぬ読者から同じような考えのメールをもらった。

After looking at the paint-splattered invitation design, a few DF readers have emailed me with the same idea Cabel Sasser tweeted on Monday:

「アップルの招待状についてだが、こんな考えはどうだろうか。タブレットの名前が「キャンバス」（Canvas）だとしたら？」

“Regarding the Apple invite, and just throwing this out there: what if it’s called ‘Canvas’?”

招待状のデザインがなかったとしても、私はこの名前が気に入った。見た目がよく、響きもいい。それに、薄く、軽く、クリーンで、すがすがしく、白紙、その上に偉大なアート作品を描くのに適したもの・・・そんなぴったりの気持ちや考えを呼び覚ます。まさにこれは完璧な名前だ。

Even without considering the invitation design, I love this name. It looks good, it sounds good, and it evokes the right feelings and ideas: thin, light, clean, crisp, blank, the thing great artwork is made upon. It’s a perfect name.

John Gruber はいたくお気に召したようだ。

アップルタブレットについては既存の印刷メディアや映像メディアを活かすニュースしか聞こえてこないような気がする。「Creation」が何を意味するのか不思議だった。

もし「キャンバス」という名前なら、「最新作」（Our Latest Creation）というキャプションともよく響きあうし、タブレットを示すと思われる細い線もにわかに意味をもってくるように思えるのだがどうか・・・
