Apple Goes Behind The Scenes Of Its New Spaceship Campus [Video]

A video detailing the creation of Apple Campus 2 was released this morning featuring glimpses of the Spaceship’s architectural achievements in natural ventilation, renewable energy, trees regrowth, and other revolutionary tech that’s will make it one of the best office buildings in the world.

The video also features interviews of the people behind the campus, like architect Norman Foster, who tells the story of how Steve Jobs recruited him for the job of building Apple Campus 2 and how the project didn’t start as a circular building but grew into that as the intensive project progressed.
Apple’s new ‘spaceship’ headquarters has been a long time in the coming, with Steve Jobs presenting the plans to the Cupertino city council back in 2011, but work has finally begun. KCBS eye-in-the-sky reporter Ron Cervi took the above Instagram photo, showing that demolition work on the site is now underway.

The Mercury News was given an exclusive look at a model of Apple Computer’s circular new corporate headquarters, proposed to be built on a 175-acre plot of land bounded by North Wolfe Road and East Homestead Road.
The structure, proposed to be completed sometime in 2015, would feature solar panels covering the roof, an underground parking structure and be camouflaged by thousands of new trees planted on the grounds. The final vote on the development proposal goes before the Cupertino City Council on Oct. 15.
To anyone who has visited the current “campus”, it’s obvious that Apple has outgrown it some time ago. It’s also obvious given the increase in headcount and operational expenses over time as can be seen below:

実際的見地からいっても、同じ場所に倍近くの人数を統合したくなる気持ちは分かる。
One can understand why, from a practical point of view, they want to consolidate what amounts to at least twice as many people back into one place.
But there is also a more subtle reason and it has to do to a fundamental distinction: Apple is a functional organization. Unlike almost every other large company it’s not organized in “divisions” which have responsibility for “a business” in the sense of profit or loss. At Apple most people or teams are assigned a function like “design”, “engineering”, “sales” etc. When a product is being built, they are assigned to that effort. When the product is complete, they go to another product.
This is not a matter of hypothesis. Not only have we heard rumors of how one product was delayed (e.g. OS X) because the teams were busy finishing another (iOS), but Adam Lashinsky’s work (sanctioned by Apple as it was) revealed the structure almost two years ago.
This structure may seem obvious to those working in small companies, but it’s completely unheard of in large companies. The nearest comparison to this structure is a military organization. There you have Infantry, Armor, Aviation etc. These groups are assigned (in a combined fashion) to a particular effort or battle and then go back to the barracks when done.

Another example is the way movies are made. Disney famously built his company around the same principle.
Seen from this perspective, the architecture of their proposed campus makes perfect sense. If it was a divisional structure then each division could live in its own building or campus. In fact, each division would not have much to talk about to any other division. But as a functional organization Apple needs to move people quickly between projects. It needs to re-configure itself frequently. Being in the same building means they can do this much more efficiently.
This is why there needs to be one building and this is why the shape chosen is probably optimal: each point within can be reached with minimal routing. The fact that it’s aesthetically pleasing is a coincidence.
Given that comforting sanity check, I measured the diameter of the Apple spaceship as 1615 ft, plus or minus a few ft., depending on where one places the ruler. That’s a radius of 807.5 ft.

新しい本社ビルを Jobs は「宇宙船」と呼ぶ。これまで世界各地ですばらしいアップルストア建てた経験を生かしてこのランドマーク的建造物を建てるのだという。駐車場は地下にし、例えば WWDC のようなイベントにも使われるホールを備える。巨大なホールだけでなく、一度に 3000 人を収容できるカフェテリアも計画するという。
Jobs called the new building “a spaceship” and said Apple will use its experience in building retail store masterpieces to construct this “architectural landmark”. Parking underneath, the building would perhaps be used for events like the WWDC – Jobs mentioned that it would have a large auditorium and a single cafeteria that could seat 3,000 at a time.

Jobs いわく、敷地部分の植栽は倍増し、少年時代を過ごしたシリコンバレーのようにアンズの果樹園も育てるという。「ビルに平面ガラスはいっさい使わず、すべて曲面ガラスにする。世界中でアップルストアを作った経験から、建築用の巨大なガラスを作る方法を知っている。このビルのために特別な曲面ガラスを使用したい。ビルの周囲はすべて曲面にするつもりだ・・・とてもクールだ。」
Jobs says he wants to double the trees on the site and put up an apricot orchard, just like where he grew up in the Valley. Jobs also said, “There is not a straight piece of glass in this building, it’s all curved. We used our experience making retail buildings all over the world now, and we know how to make the biggest pieces of glass in the world for architectural use. And, we want to make the glass specifically for this building here. We can make it curve all the way around the building… It’s pretty cool.”
He wants to generate his own power using natural gas and other greener and more efficient fuels and use the grid as backup. They plan to break ground next year and to move in by 2015.
“Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir men’s blood and probably themselves will not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will never die, but long after we are gone will be a living thing, asserting itself with ever-growing insistency. Remember that our sons and grandsons are going to do things that would stagger us. Let your watchword be order and your beacon beauty. Think big.”
