iPad mini 発売直後に Dan Frommer が書いた印象記が今読み返してみても興味深い。

これぞ本格的な iPad

週末にたっぷり iPad mini を使ってみて、これこそ本格的な（real）iPad だということが分かった。スクリーンの鮮明さはイマイチだが、それ以外はすべて「クラシック」iPad より優れている。大方のひとにとってスクリーンの鮮明さは大きな妨げにはならないだろう。

My take after spending a bunch of the weekend with the iPad mini: This is the real iPad. With the exception of screen sharpness, everything about it is better than the bigger, “classic” iPad — and screen sharpness won’t be a deal breaker for the vast majority of people.

ベストセラーになる

ビッグサイズの古い iPad は今後も売れ続けるだろうと思う。時によってはその方が優れており、いずれはより軽く、より薄いものが出てくるだろうから。（将来いつの日か真の意味で大型の iPad をアップルがテストしてくれるといいと思う。それは楽しみだ。）しかし、誰もが iPad mini を買うようになったら、アップルにとって供給問題が起きて、人為的に販売を抑えるだろう。iPad mini はアップルタブレットのベストセラーになるだろうと思う。（それは iPhone に継いで２番目によく売れる製品になるだろう。）

I expect Apple to continue to sell the big, old iPad indefinitely: In some situations, it is superior, and it’s likely to get lighter and thinner sooner than later. (I’d even love to see Apple experiment with a really big iPad someday. That might be fun.) But once most people can buy an iPad mini — Apple will likely have supply issues well into next year, artificially limiting sales — I expect the iPad mini to become Apple’s best-selling tablet. (And its second-best selling device, period, after the iPhone.)

・その軽さこそ iPad mini の優れた点だ。使っていてもほとんど重さが気にならない。これは大きな違いだ。フルサイズの iPad は大スクリーンの贅沢品だ。しかしその重量と細密度はいささか使用上問題となるかもしれない。自分はほとんど毎晩のようにモノを読むのに iPad を使いながら眠りにつくが、ちゃんと持ち続けるにはかなりの努力が要る。（ウトウトしたときうっかり iPad 3 を落として顔や鼻にぶっつけると、そんな経験は２度としたくないと思う。）iPad mini ならちゃんと持ち続けられるだろう。だから他の場所でもいろいろ使う機会が増えるだろう。それこそが iPad の存在意義だ。

– The best thing about the iPad mini is its weight — it’s almost effortless to use, and that’s a big difference. The full-size iPad is more luxurious with its bigger screen, but its weight and density always made it a little tricky to use. I read on my iPad most nights to fall asleep, and even just holding it steady and upright requires actual effort. (The cracking blow of an iPad 3 falling onto my face and nose, after I’d drifted to sleep, is one I’d never like to experience again.) I feel more confident holding the iPad mini, which means I’m more likely to use it in more places — the whole point of an iPad.

・Retina iPad を半年も使ったあとだと非 Retina ディスプレイにはがっかりする。しかし十分そのトレードオフに値する。１年ないし２年後に Retina iPad mini が出たら、きっと買い換えるだろう。iPad は自分にとって主に読書用に使うが、Retina ディスプレイに勝る体験はない。（丁寧に印刷された本みたいだといっていいかもしれない。）しかし腕を伸ばした距離で見れば、iPad mini のスクリーンでも十分で、ガマンできないほどではない。小さい文字を読むのは困難だが、ズームして拡大するのはカンタンだ。再度言うが、劇的に持ち運びが容易になったことは十分に値する。

– The non-retina display is a bummer after spending half a year with a retina iPad. But it’s worth the tradeoff. I’ll definitely be replacing this with a retina iPad mini when they’re available, probably in a year or two. This is primarily a reading device for me, and there’s nothing like reading on a retina display. (Ok, a well-printed book, I guess.) But an arm’s length away, the iPad mini screen is good enough not to drive me crazy. Small text is hard to read, but zooming around is easy enough. Again, the dramatic increase in portability is worth it.

・コイツにまったくキズがつかないようにするのは諦めた。コイツは私にとって「ガンガン使う道具」（“beater” iPad）だ。それは保護ケースなしで使うって意味だよ。地下鉄で使い、そのまま保護ケースなしにポケットに入れ、誰かに強くぶっつけられてもそれで構わない。バックパックに入れるときは布製ケース（あるいはスマートカバー）を使うかもしれない。しかし始終持ち運び、しょっちゅう使う iPad だということは多少のキズがついてもも構わないということだ。買い換えが必要になっても、ガマンできないほど高くつくワケではなくなった。（一番安い 16 GB/Wi-Fi のベースモデルを選んだのもそういうワケだ。）

– I’m giving up now on keeping this thing remotely scratch-free and perfect. This is officially my “beater” iPad. That means I’m going case-free, baby. I’m going to use it on the subway, I’m going to carry it unguarded in my pocket, and if I have to whack someone with it, so be it. I’ll probably keep it in a sleeve (or use the smart cover I bought) when I throw it into a backpack. But the plan is to make this thing my workhorse carry-around iPad, and if that means getting a little scuffed up, that’s okay. The replacement price, if necessary, isn’t too much to swallow anymore. (That’s one of the reasons I went with the cheapest, 16 GB/wi-fi base model.)

・iPad バージョンの Instagram を今ほど欲しいと思ったことはない。Twitter、iBooks、Instapaper などのまっさらな iPad アプリをとりあえず入れて使い始めたが、どれもすばらしい。しかし、Retina に対応していない iPhone 版の Instagram は実にヒドい。なんとかならないものか。

– I have never wanted an Instagram iPad app more badly than I do now. Pretty much every other iPad app looks great, and I’ve started fresh with a skeleton crew of apps — Twitter, iBooks, Instapaper, a few others, and that’s it so far. But the iPhone (non-retina) version of Instagram looks horrible on this thing. Let’s do this.

・数週間あるいは数か月使ってもなかなか答えが得られないと思われる大きな問題 — それは自分のガジェット生活のどこに iPad mini が収まるかという問題だ。もしもどちらも使うとしたら、iPad mini ではなく iPhone を使うのはどんな時か？ Retina iPad はいつ使うだろうか？（Retina スクリーンでの HD ビデオ視聴に勝るものはない。Planet も Earth も。）どちらの iPad も持ち運ぶことになるだろうか？（一方は LTE、もう一方はテザリングで使えるもの。）２年経つのにまだ信じられないほど早い MacBook Air はどうか？ １週間の出張はどうか、週末のお出かけ、通常の出勤時 — それぞれに相応しい組み合わせを考えるとしたら、多分どれも違ってくるだろう。iPad mini は電話により近いだろうか？ ビッグ iPad はラップトップにより近いだろうか？ みんなはどちらを買うだろうか？ 答えが出るにはしばらく時間がかかりそうだ。

– The big question, which I won’t know the answer to for a few weeks or months, is how the iPad mini will fit into my gadget routine. Where will I use my iPhone instead of my iPad mini if I have both? Where will I bring my retina iPad? (There’s still nothing like watching HD video on a retina screen. Planet. Earth.) Will I ever bring both iPads? (One has LTE, the other needs to tether.) What about my 2-year-old-but-still-unbelievably-quick MacBook Air? If I were to design my ideal technology kits for a week-long business trip, a Saturday around town, or a normal day of work, they’d all probably be different. Is the iPad mini too much like a phone? Is the big iPad too much like a laptop? Which do people want to buy more? That’s what we’ll eventually find out.

かつて自分が望んだもの

それはともかく、iPad mini を２４時間使ってみて、かつて 2008 年に私がガジェットに望んだもの（当時私が「iPod touch HD」と呼んだもの）にもっとも近いことに気がついた。

Anyway, the iPad mini, after a day’s use, is the closest thing I’ve found to the gadget I started wishing for in late 2008, which I’d called the “iPod touch HD.”

何のことか？ それはタブレットコンピュータのことだ。７インチないし８インチのマルチタッチスクリーンを備え、iPod touch のスクリーンの約４倍の大きさで、アップル OS X を内蔵する。iTunes の音楽や映画に Wi-Fi でアクセスでき、3G サービス（あるいは Wi-Fi/Bluetooth でテザリングしてインターネットにアクセス）のオプションがあり、App Store へもアクセスできる、そんなタブレットコンピュータだ。

What is it? A tablet computer with a 7- or 8-inch multi-touch screen — about four times the iPod touch screen area — with Apple’s OS X built in. This includes wi-fi access to iTunes for music and movies, optional 3G service (or wi-fi/Bluetooth tethering to an iPhone for Internet access), and access to the App Store. […]

それを何に使うのか？ iPhone でできるすべてのことに — ただし電話をかけることは除いて。コンピュータでできるすべてのことに — ただしいつどこにいても。そのほか、音楽を聞いたり、ビデオを見たり、ウェブサーフィンや、電子書籍・Instapaper の文章を読んだり、ゲームをしたり、ブログの原稿を書いたり、などなど。Photoshop や本格的なファイルシステムを必要とするものには使わない。それでも構わない。何故なら職場や家庭にコンピュータがあるのはそのためだから・・・

What will we use it for? Everything we use the iPhone for, except phone calls. And many things we use our computer for, except everywhere. This includes: Listening to music, watching videos, surfing the Web, reading e-books and Instapaper articles, playing games, writing blog posts, etc. We won’t use it for Photoshop or anything we need a real file system for. But that’s okay — that’s why we have a computer at work and at home.

かつて考えたものの半額

もっとも顕著な違いは、当時そんなものを買おうとすれば、「MacBook と iPhone の中間の価格 — 本本来そうあるべき価格 — すなわち 600 ドル、メモリーを増やしたりすれば 700 ドル」で買えればラッキーだろうと考えていたことだ。iPad mini のエントリー価格は 329 ドルだ。私が想像した価格の半分だ。（そこそこのライバル機種ならもっと安い。）これってスゴいことだ。

Perhaps the most impressive part: Back then, I thought it’d be lucky to be able to buy one of these things for “for $600, or $700 with more memory. Halfway between the MacBook and the iPhone, right where it belongs.” The iPad mini starts at $329 — half the price I’d imagined. (And its so-so competitors are even cheaper.) That’s pretty nuts.

実際使ってみたら、iPad mini の方が「本格的（本来そうあるべき）」iPad に思えたというところがオモシロい。

iPad mini が「本来そうあるべき iPad」に思え、これまでの iPad が「ビッグ iPad」に見えたという視点の変化が興味深い。

実は筆者もウェブ端末としての iPad については長い間７インチサイズを待ち望んでいた。ペーパーバックのサイズ（洋書）が理想的に思えたからだ。

当初から２種類のモデルがあるというウワサに期待をつないだり、１０インチが間違いなさそうだとなった段階でもまだ７インチに未練があった。

価格も 1000 ドル以下でどこまで下げられるかという点が関心の的だったが、家電普及の分岐点である 600 ドルを希望しつつも、ムリだろうなという感じを強く抱いたものだった。

１０インチ、499 ドルという第１世代モデルの登場で、期待と失望が半々で交錯した。

そう考えれば、iPad mini によって全ての願望が実現したことになるのだが・・・

技術的な問題

複数の読者から質問を受けた。どうやら iPad mini の方が優れたフォームファクターらしいというのなら、なぜアップルはオリジナル iPad でそのサイズを採用しなかったのだろうか、と。私の考えるところ、いくつかの要因があると思う。第１に、そうしたくても技術的にできなかったのだと思う。2010 年に発表されたオリジナル iPad は iPad 2 と比べてもかなり厚かった。当時薄くできなかったということは、小さくすることも — 同じ価格帯では — 出来なかったのだと思う。

I’ve been asked by several readers why, if this is a seemingly better form factor, Apple didn’t go with this size for the original iPad. I think there are several factors. First, I don’t think they could have, technically. The original iPad in 2010 was pretty thick compared even to the iPad 2. If they couldn’t make it thinner then, I don’t think they could have made it smaller either — not at the same price points.

新しいコンセプトのマシン

第２に、薄さや重さを別にしても、新しいコンセプトとして消費者に iPad を所有したいという気を起こさせるには 9.7 インチの方が優れていたのではないかと思う。発表当時、オリジナル iPad に対する最大の不満は「なんだ、大きな iPhone か」というものだった。より小さい 7.9 インチディスプレイを採用していたら、不満は一層大きくなっただろう。また、物理的サイズを大きくすることは、デベロッパに対し iPhone に最適化していたアプリの iPad バージョンを作らねばという気持ちに一層させたのではないだろうか。

Second, thinness and weight aside, I think the 9.7-inch size was better to start with conceptually, to establish the iPad in consumers’ minds as something they might want to own. The biggest complaint about the original iPad upon its unveiling was that it was nothing more than a “big iPhone”. That would have been an even bigger complaint if they’d launched with the smaller 7.9-inch display instead. The bigger difference in physical size made it even more likely that developers would do the work to create iPad-optimized versions of their iPhone apps, too.

繰り返される iPod の物語

さらにまた一週間使ってみて、前の週よりなお、大方のひとにとっては iPad mini のサイズの方がベストであるという一層の確信を得た。１０年前の iPod の物語がまた繰り返されることになるのだ。

Another week in, though, and I’m more convinced than even a week ago that the iPad Mini is the best size for most people. It’s last decade’s iPod story all over again.
