Apple-1 は組み立て部品キットとして発売された。冒頭の写真はそれをアフターマーケットのキーボードと木製ケースでカスタマイズしたもの。
その Apple-1 が、なんとクリスティーズのオークションに出されるという。

アップルの創業者 Steve Jobs が両親のガレージで作った最初のアップルコンピュータが売りに出される。それも目の飛び出るような 15 万ポンドという値段で・・・
The first ever Apple computer that company founder Steve Jobs sold from his parents’ garage is up for sale – for a whopping £150,000.

This example will be the first ever to be sold by a major auction house when it goes under the hammer at Christie’s of London.

組み立てキット
Apple-1 はパーツを組み立てるだけでいい最初のコンピュータだった。ただしモニターやキーボードは付いていなかった。
The Apple-1s were the first fully pre-assembled computer to be produced, but even so did not come with a monitor or keyboard.
これら初期のコンピュータは博物館やコレクターにとって垂涎の的だ。
Museums and a new breed of collector are desperate to get their hands on these early examples.

Early geeks would have had to part with $666.66 (£410) to buy one of the first Apples.

Its designer, Steve Wozniak, liked repeating digits – and it was sold to a local shop for $500 plus a one-third mark-up.

Julian Wilson, from Christie’s, said: ‘Before the Apple-1 you would have to put together your own motherboard and would need soldering skills.
「この見本こそ iPod や iPad、iPhone の先駆者なのです。箱から出せばすぐ使えるものでした。それがオリジナルコンセプトだったのです。」
‘This is the forerunner of the iPod, iPad and iPhone. It worked straight out of the box, which was the original concept.

「アップルの血統はこのモデルに遡ります。200 台余りが作られましたが、現存するのはその 1/4 にも満たないでしょう。」
‘Apple’s lineage can be traced back to this model and as far as we know there were about 200 made and perhaps a quarter survive.

ここから歴史は始まった

‘Steve Jobs sold these from his parents’ garage and there is a growing appreciation of the history of computing – and this is where home computers started.

Who was the high bidder? According to Affaritaliani.it, an online Italian newspaper, it was Marco Boglione, an Italian businessman who likes to collect tech-related paraphernalia.
火曜日のクリスティーズオークションでは Apple-1 のほかにもハイテク製品が出品された。第1次世界大戦で使われた Enigma 暗号機は 10 万 7000 ドルで落札された。
The auction of the Apple-1 was part of a series of high-tech auctions that took place on Tuesday through Christie’s. An Enigma cipher machine, which was used to encrypt secret messages during World War I, was also auctioned off, fetching $107,000.
