Justin Sullivan]

Last week I took a trip to Silicon Valley, zigzagging around to meet with start-ups, venture capitalists and the big technology companies that inhabit the area. My goal with these meetings was to get a glimpse of new themes and services consumers can expect to see soon.

Although everyone I met with was hard at work on exciting new products, I can’t really tell you about them. Why? Because there was another, more subtle theme coursing through the Valley that I didn’t expect to see: extreme secrecy.

Sure, a few of companies in Silicon Valley have always been tight-lipped about their upcoming products. I’ve seen this on previous trips. But during this fact-finding mission, most people I met with seemed to have adopted an Apple-style level of secrecy. I often felt like the President of the United States was in town and undercover Secret Service agents were posing as nerds.

During almost every company visit I was asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement, told “this conversation is off the record,” and I was escorted everywhere, including to the bathroom on more than one occasion.

At Google, a company that prides itself on openness, some buildings were on “lockdown” to ensure that upcoming products don’t leak. Later, a Google employee, who of course asked not to be named for fear of repercussions from their employer, told me the heightened secrecy was something new for the company.
“It’s a very delicate time in technology right now. Google is competing with everyone: Facebook and Twitter on a social level, Apple with mobile, Microsoft with search,” explained the Google employee. “Google has started to realize that they have to protect upcoming products and adopting secrecy has become necessary within the organization.”

I would tell you I visited Apple, but officially, I didn’t. People who visit the company are told not to check-in using location-based social networks for fear that they might blow their cover.

At one point I realized that a group of six chatty British men staying in my hotel were TweetDeck employees who had come to San Francisco after being acquired by Twitter last month. When I ended up on the same elevator as the men, I eagerly introduced myself as a technology reporter and the loquacious group went silent immediately. They wouldn’t even talk to me about the weather.

A few select companies opened their doors and proudly showed me around the offices and talked about new products and research — thanks Hewlett-Packard — but in contrast to my last trip, these were the exceptions, not the norm.

As technology companies continue to race to the top of their respective genres, this secrecy theme is likely to ratchet up even more. As for this blog post, it will self-destruct in 4, 3, 2…
