ガジェットサイトのナンバーワン Engadget が興味深い数字を載せている。モバイル機器毎に見たアクセス内訳だ。
Engadget にはモバイル用に特化した「m.engadget.com」というサイトがある。しかし、当然のこととしてそれぞれのモバイル機器に最適化したサイトがあるわけではない。
ところが・・・

数字を調べてみて愕然とした。

2008 年の数字で、Engadget サイトへモバイル機器からのアクセス総数のうち 95.8% が iPhone、iPhone 3G および iPod touch によるものだった。［フルサイトに対するもの。モバイル向けサイト m.engadget.com に対するものは含まない。］・・・ そこで、我々としては iPhone に最適化した「i.engadget.com」（ベータバージョン）を新たに立ち上げることとした。

予想外に大きい数字
トラフィックの大部分がアップルによるものだと聞いても私は驚かない。 モバイル機器からのインターネットアクセスの大部分は iPhone によるものだと AT&T がいったのを覚えているから。しかし、Engadget という技術に詳しいハイエンドユーザーの場合、一般に比べてアップルの占める割合は低いだろうと思っていた。ハイエンドユーザーは、一般と比べてはるかに沢山のモバイル機器を駆使してウェブアクセスするに違いないからだ。もっとメジャーなサイトもデータを公開して、モバイル機器によるアクセスのうち iPhone がどのくらいの割合を占めるか分かったらおもしろいと思う。
It doesn’t surprise me that Apple is driving most of this traffic; we know from AT&T that the iPhone is driving the vast majority of mobile Internet usage. But I would have thought that Apple’s dominance would have been somewhat lower with Engadget’s tech-savvy crowd, who are far more likely to have tried surfing from the other devices on the list than most people. It will be interesting to see just how much the iPhone rules mobile traffic as more mainstream sites share their data.
