Gadget-retailing giant Radio Shack unveiled the TRS-80 Model I at a press conference at New York’s Warwick Hotel 35 years ago today, on August 3, 1977. (The company didn’t call it the Model I at the time: Like Apple’s Apple I, it only became the I after a II was introduced.)

Harry’s valentine to the TRS-80 strikes a chord with me. I’m a few years younger than he is; I was 7 when the TRS-80 went on sale. The man I knew through our local Big Brother program introduced me to his a year or two later, and when I asked whether it could play games, he told me, “Sure, if you write them.”

Trash-80 とは呼ばないで

特定の年代のひとの多くにとって、TRS-80 は思い出の中で特別な場所を占めている。Harry がいうように、Trash-80［ゴミ・エイティ］とは呼ばないでほしいものだ。

So yeah, for many of us of a certain age, the TRS-80 will always occupy a spot in our hearts. And as Harry says, please don’t call it a Trash-80.

初めてのパソコンが TRS-80 だった筆者にとってはとてもうれしい記事。

TRS-80 は 1970 年代末から 1980 年代初めにかけて、Apple II や Commodore PET 2001 と並ぶパソコン御三家の製品のひとつだった。

アップルストアが登場する遥か昔に、全国展開した Radio Shack の全国チェーン店で販売されていたのは考えてみればオドロキだ。

文箱の底から：TRS-80 のことなど

溜まりにたまった古い書籍や書類をきれいサッパリ捨てることにした。

捨てきれずに残しておいたものばかりだが目が見えないのではしょうがない。いつ死んでもおかしくない身ではなおさらだ。

そのまま捨てるには忍びないので、いくつかは記録に残しておきたい。

まず最初はマックユーザーになる前の時代のもの。いわば「私のマック前史」だ。

生まれて初めて買ったパソコンが Tandy Radio Shack のTRS-80 だった。

アップルやコモドールと並ぶ当時のパソコン御三家のタンディが出したものだった。

モノクロスクリーンで記憶媒体はカセットテープというレトロなシロモノ。

ホビースト相手のラジオキットを売る Radio Shack のイメージが抜けず、”Trash-80″ と呼ばれたりもした。

ベーシック（BASIC）を搭載しているだけで、ソフトなんてなにもない。

ベーシックはこの本（362 ページ）で覚えた。これが筆者のバイブルだった。続編にもお世話になった。

サブルーチン（subroutine）というものを知ったのもこのときだった。

ただひたすらベーシックのプログラムを打ち込んではゲームを走らせた。

当時銀座のタンディショールームに置かれていたのが TRS-80 ユーザー向けの月刊誌「80micro」だった。理屈は分からなくても打ち込みさえすれば動くプログラムがたくさん載っていた。

上の写真は手許に残っていた 1983 年の特集号。594 ページもあって、ブログラムと解説がいっぱい。

パーソナルコンピュータとはベーシックのことだった。
