２つのモデルを計画中

この数週間、我々はアップルの iPhone 事情に詳しいひとたちとあれこれ話をした。Lion と新 MacBook Air の７月１９日発表の話をもたらしたのがそのひとりだ。アップルのそれぞれ異なる部門と関係する３人の独立した個人がこの話のソースだ。とりわけ重要なのは、アップルが秋口に iPhone の２つのモデルを計画しているという点だ。ひとつは予想どおりの完全アップグレード版 iPhone 5、もうひとつは廉価版の iCloud iPhone だ。

Over the past few weeks we have chatted with a few people who are familiar with Apple’s iPhone plans. One source is the same from our June 28th report that gave us the the internal launch date of July 19th for Lion and the new MacBook Airs. We have three independent sources contributing to this report who are all connected to Apple in different capacities. The main takeaway is that Apple intends to launch two iPhone models in the fall with a full upgraded iPhone 5 as expected, as well as a cheaper iPhone which will be the iCloud iPhone.

薄くて軽くて速い iPhone 5

アップルは新しい iPhone のためのスペシャルイベントを計画している。iCloud iPhone がイベントのビッグサプライズだというのが我々の複数ソースの一致した意見だ。事情に詳しいひとりによれば、実際に別々の２つのモデルが現在生産中だという。iPhone 5 は（iPad 2 のアップグレードと同じような）薄くて、速くて、軽いという現在のウワサと合致する。iPad 2 を動かしている A5 チップを搭載し、GSM と CDMA の双方がひとつのモデルで可能になる Qualcomm のワイヤレスチップを搭載する。iPhone 4 のデザインから生じたアンテナ問題を回避するためデザインには小幅な変更が付け加えられる。ひとりのソースによれば、4G LTE は含まれないという。第１世代の LTE ベースバンドプロセッサとそれをサポートするチップセットはプリント基板のサイズを大きくなるので、薄くて軽いという考え方に合わないからだという。

Apple is planning to hold a special event to launch the new iPhones, and the sources agreed that the iCloud iPhone will be the big takeaway from the event. One person familiar with the matter indicated that there are indeed two distinct models currently in production. The iPhone 5 is expected to align with existing rumors to be thinner, faster, and lighter similar to the upgrade for the iPad 2. The A5 chip that powers the iPad 2 will be on board as well as Qualcomm’s wireless chip allowing for GSM and CDMA to be in one model. There will be a new design that will offer small changes in response to the antenna problems of the iPhone 4 design. One source indicated that 4G LTE will not be included because the first-generation LTE baseband processor and supporting chipset would require Apple to increase the size of the printed circuit board which conflicts with the thinner and lighter mindset.

独自の価値を持つ iCloud iPhone

クオリティのアップグレードが iPhone 5 だ。しかしイベントの主役は廉価版の iCloud iPhone だ。アップルとしては安価な iPhone を提供したいが、他と比べてダントツの大きなマージンも確保したい。そこでアップルは、搭載する Flash メモリーを減らすことにしたのだと複数のソーソはいう。Flash メモリーの価格そのものも低下している。iSuppli が行なった iPhone 4 のコスト分析を見ると、ストレージは全製造コストの 15% だ。3GS についても同じだ。何百万台という製造ユニットから 15% 削減できることの意味は大きい。iCloud モデルのユーザーは、iPhone 自体にはあまりデータを保存せず、iCloud を大幅に活用すると思われる。このことは iCloud 自体を価値のある機能とするのに役立ち、アップルのエコシステム全体を利用する動機にもなる。

The iPhone 5 will be a quality upgrade, but the star of the show will be the cheaper iCloud iPhone alternative. Apple wants to offer a lower priced iPhone while still maintaining their industry leading profit margins. According to our sources, Apple is going to do this by using less on board Flash memory which are also falling in price. When looking at the iSuppli cost breakdown of the parts of the iPhone 4, the storage accounts for 15% of the cost to build the device, and that’s true for the 3GS as well. Reducing 15% of the cost across millions of units is a substantial savings. The iCloud model will be for users who will want to use the iCloud heavily for storage, and keep a lot less on the iPhone itself. This will also help Apple make iCloud a feature by itself and reason to use the entire Apple ecosystem.

２年契約だと iCloud iPhone は無料？

Apple is aiming for a $400 final price for the iCloud iPhone as compared to the typical $600 iPhone price, which the iPhone 5 will cost. The carrier subsidization will bring the cost to consumers down to free with a 2 year contract for the iCloud iPhone with the same $199 iPhone cost for the iPhone 5. To achieve the lower cost for the iCloud iPhone, Apple will use many of the same internal parts from the iPhone 4 since they’re readily available in their supply chain already, and have gone down a bit in cost. When looking at iSuppli you can see how the same parts drop in price from the 3G to 3GS to 4. The iPhone 5 will include many new parts including processor, flash memory, and both cameras. The iCloud iPhone will be using the same internal parts from the iPhone 4, but will use a slightly different external design with an aluminum back panel similar to the iPad 2. Apple will go away from the relatively more expensive glass back panel. Also, the stainless steel band is speculated to be gone with simply a curved aluminum back, again like the iPad 2.

One of our contacts is familiar with the design of the iPhone 4, and says that Apple is cutting the cost of making an iPhone 4 without sacrificing any of its qualities. The main cost cutting will come from Apple reducing on board storage, using a smoother yet cheaper aluminum back and siding, and already having a majority of the supplies on hand. The result will be a cloud based iPhone experience that is unique in the market that will be accessible to a large percentage of users because of the price point.

Our source’s main point was that Apple’s iPhone line will share similarities with their MacBook line with the iCloud iPhone like the MacBook Air and the iPhone 5 as the MacBook Pro. The two different models were the main reason Apple pushed back the launch window, and are now operating under a launch period of the last week of September. The difference at first sight will be quite noticeable with the iCloud iPhone looking like a small iPad. We would like to thank the three independent people who contributed to this report, and they have asked to remain anonymous.

iPhone のローエンドモデルとは

どうやら９月には２種類の新しい iPhone が出ることは間違いなさそうだ。新デザインのハイエンドモデルに加えて、それとは別のローエンドモデルだ。

ウワサの中心は専らハイエンドモデルだが、重要なのはローエンドモデルの方だと Seth Weintraub がいっている。

ローエンドモデル vs ハイエンドモデル

今現在まったく異なる２つの iPhone が市販されている。 iPhone 3GS と iPhone 4 だ。iPhone 4 はハイエンドモデル、iPhone 3GS はより安価なモデルだ。

まったく新しいローエンドモデルが必要

そうとも思えない。iPhone 4 の価格では安い Android フォンに太刀打ちできないからだ。iPhone 4 の価格は現在 600 ドル以上する。それが一夜にして半額になるとは考えられない。現在の 3GS ですら価格の点では競争にならない。Android との競争に打ち勝つためにはまったく新しいローエンドモデルが必要だ。

I’m not so sure. For one, the price of an iPhone 4 isn’t going to compete with cheap Android phones in any way. Apple is currently selling them for over $600. They aren’t going to cut the price in half overnight. The 3GS doesn’t currently compete on price either. I think that to compete on price with Android, Apple has to make a totally new low end phone as well.

iPod touch がヒント

それはどんなものになるか？ そのヒントを与えてくれるのが iPod touch だと思う。iPod touch のスクリーンは iPhone 4 と同じ解像度だが、IPS 方式［In-Plane Switching：日立が開発した液晶ディスプレイの一形式］ではないので視角によって表示ムラができる。（ビデオ参照）

What’s it going to be? I think a good place to start looking is the curent iPod touch. The iPod touch has the same resolution screen as the iPhone 4 but with poor(er) viewing angles because the screen doesn’t have In-Plane Switching. (video below)

背面カメラは iPhone 4 より一桁劣るほか、GPS はなく、RAM も少なく、バッテリーの持ちも悪い。

Also, the back camera is an order of magnitude worse than the iPhone 4′s, it doesn’t have GPS, has less RAM and the battery doesn’t last quite as long.

それに当然「電話」機能はない。

…and obviously the iPod lacks the “phone” bits.

229 ドルの iPod touch

それでも「もう少しで iPhone になる」iPod touch は、店頭価格 229 ドル（ディスカウントなら 200 ドル以下）で結構売れて大きな利益を上げている。電話会社と２年縛り契約のない 650 ドルの iPhone 4 と比べてもそうだ。登場して１年以上経つこの iPod touch プラットフォームを利用すれば、安価な iPhone を作れないわけではないと私は考える。

But Apple somehow makes a lot of money selling this “almost iPhone” for just $229 retail (and under $200 at discounts) vs. the $650 that the iPhone 4 fetches without a plan. It doesn’t seem infeasible to me that Apple could use the iPod touch platform that debuted a full year ago to build a cheap iPhone device.

iPhone lite それとも iPhone Air？

Here’s how:

iPod touch と同じハードを使う。GPS/3G ベースバンドチップと電話の配線、３メガピクセルのカメラを加える。そうすれば iPhone lite の 99% は出来上がりだ。iPhone Air と呼んだっていい。

Start with the same hardware. Add the GPS/3G baseband chips and some phone wiring and a solid 3 megapixel camera and you are 99% of the way to an iPhone lite. iPhone Air? Whatever.

安価な世界モデル

こんなモデルを作れば、iPhone 4 より薄く、しかもほとんどスペックの変わらない iPhone が 299 ドルで出来ることになる。しかももっといいことがある。

Apple could make this device, one that is thinner than an iPhone 4, with most of the same specs, for $299. But here’s the best part:

それは米国および世界の４つ（10？）のすべてのネットワークで利用できる世界モデルになり得ることだ。すでにアップルは Verizon iPhone と iPad で Qualcomm Gobi チップを採用している。

This iPhone could be a world phone that works on all four (10?) US networks and abroad. Apple already has Qualcomm Gobi chips in its Verizon iPhone and iPad.

電話会社に競争させる

この商品をどう位置付けるか、アップルはその考え方を変えると思う。iPod を売るようにして iPhone を売るのだ。Apple Store でも、Amazon でも、空港のキオスクでも・・・。そしてケースメーカーのように電話会社にもサービスの価格や質で競争させる。AT&T のネットワークで使えるが、その対応が悪ければ Verizon や Sprint に行けばいい。アップルが reprogrammable SIM［機種変更可能な SIM カード？］の検討を始めてかなりの時間が経つ。それはローエンド路線への転換も可能にする。これまでで最も売れる iPhone が欲しいのなら、電話会社は行動に移して、顧客のために一生懸命競争すべきだ。価格は下がり、顧客のオプションも増える。さらに多くのひとがアップルのエコシステムに加わる。

I think Apple changes how it positions this device. It just sells this iPhone like it sells iPods in Apple Stores, at Amazon, in kiosks at Airports. Let the carriers all compete on price and quality of service like case manufacturers do. It works on AT&T but if they aren’t treating you right, you can go hook up with Verizon or Sprint. Apple has been working on reprogrammable SIMs for some time but could just go in a low-tech direction as well. If the carriers want the most popular iPhone ever, they play ball and they compete hard for customers. Prices drop, options open up for consumers. More people join the Apple ecosystem.

この iPhone がプリペイドのネットワークで使えることがとても重要だ。Sprint の Virgin だと月額 25 ドルでデータ通信は使い放題だ。音声電話プランなんて必要にもならない。3G データプランと VoIP アプリが一つか二つ（Facetime？）あれば済んでしまう・・・

Most importantly, it would work on prepaid networks like Sprint’s Virgin, which charge $25/month for unlimited data. Heck, maybe you don’t even need a voice plan. Just 3G data and a VoIP app or two (Facetime?)

Sure, carriers could buy these things up, subsidize them and give them away free. But monthly subsidies add up quickly. I think a lot of US customers are sick of 2-year plans. A $300 iPhone could smash the hold that carriers have on US customers.

More than that, it could put Apple back in the driver’s seat. Apple’s iPod didn’t grab most of the market until Apple made some concessions: It made iPod Windows PC-compatible with a USB cord instead of Firewire. Suddenly everyone could own one. After that, the iPod’s popularity soared and Apple owned the market.

iPhone でも「iPod の力」を示せるのだ。

This could be iPhone’s “iPod moment”.

初代 iPhone を出して以来アップルが多くの収益を上げたことを考えてみよう。音楽、着信音、アプリ、書籍、映画、テレビ番組、それに今度は iCloud・・・アップルのエコシステムに加わるというのはそういうことなのだ。電話会社に縛られない iPhone が出せれば、そこからもさらにアップルは収益をひねり出せる。大衆マーケット向けのデバイスを出せば、今よりもっとカネを稼げるという点がポイントなのだ。

It also helps to consider that Apple makes a lot of money after the original iPhone purchase. Music, ringtones, apps, books, movies, TV shows, and now iCloud are all part of joining the Apple ecosystem. With an iPhone that is able to move from carrier to carrier, Apple could conceivably take some cash off the top there too. The point is, Apple could make so much more than it does currently with a mass market device.
