［What is iCloud?］
今年の WWDC は This is my next liveblog でフォローした。Engadget 時代と同じ１分遅れでリアルタイムに進行する。
しかし Steve Jobs のナマの声が聞けないので落ち着かない。改めてアップルのサイトでストリーミングビデオを見た。
冒頭に登場する Steve Jobs が痛々しいほどヤセているのが気になった。声も弱々しい。改めて彼の病状が気遣われる。
それでも後半にきて iCloud の段［78 分ごろ］になると、見違えるように熱がこもってくる。どれほど彼が iCloud に力を入れているか想像できるようだ。
今回も iCloud について的確な予測をした John Gruber が、WWDC 2011 について第一印象を簡潔にまとめている。

「格下げする」
［PC や Mac を格下げする］
今日のキーノートはてんこ盛りだった。たくさんのことが発表がされた。それぞれについて多くの議論がなされるだろう。しかしポイントは、デジタルハブとして iCloud が iTunes に取って代わると Steve Jobs が語った次のことばだ。「PC や Mac を単なるデバイスのひとつに格下げする（demote）」と。
Today’s was a jam-packed keynote. Apple announced a lot of news; there is much to talk and think about. But the key line was when Steve Jobs, describing iCloud replacing iTunes as your digital hub, said, “We’re going to demote the PC and the Mac to just be a device.”

ワイヤレスデジタルハブ万歳
iCloud は新しい iTunes だ。コードでつながれる（tethered）デジタルハブは死んだ。ワイヤレスデジタルハブ万歳というわけだ。iCloud が今後１０年を方向づけるとアップルは見ている。Mac/PC につながれた iTunes がこれまでの１０年を方向づけてきたように。
iCloud is the new iTunes. The tethered digital hub is dead; long live the wireless digital hub. Apple sees iCloud as shaping the next ten years the way the iTunes-on-your-Mac/PC digital hub shaped the last ten.

ネイティブアプリ
これは来るべき１０年についてグーグルが考えるビジョンとは根本的に異なる。どちらもデータはクラウドにあり、ネットワークに接続することによって何処からでもアクセスできる。しかしグーグルのビジョンはウェブブラウザ上で動くソフトウェアに関するものだ。それに対してアップルのビジョンは個々のデバイスで動くネイティブアプリに関するものだ。デスクトップであれ、タブレットやハンドヘルドであれ、アップルはこれらのネイティブアプリにかつてないほどコミットしているのだ。
This is a fundamentally different vision for the coming decade than Google’s. In both cases, your data is in the cloud, and you can access it from anywhere with a network connection. But Google’s vision is about software you run in a web browser. Apple’s is about native apps you run on devices. Apple is as committed to native apps — on the desktop, tablet, and handheld — as it has ever been.

ウインドウかスクリーンか
グーグルはブラウザのウインドウをベースに考える。アップルがベースにするのはスクリーンだ。この点こそ本日のキーノートについて今後１０年記憶すべきことなのだ。
Google’s frame is the browser window. Apple’s frame is the screen. That’s what we’ll remember about today’s keynote ten years from now.

保存 ＋ プッシュ
「同期」（sync）ということばが使われていない点に注目。今日のキーノートでも「同期」ということばは一度も使われなかったと思う。代わりに使ったことばは「保存」（store）と「プッシュ」（push）だった。
Note that they don’t use the word “sync”. I’m pretty sure they never once uttered “sync” during the keynote today either. The verbs they use are store and push.

iCloud のデータこそホンモノ
アップルが同期をピアツウピア（peer-to-peer）、すなわちすべてのデバイスが対等の立場であると考えている点がポイントだ。唯一の公式なデータ貯蔵庫（data store）である iCloud では、iCloud がそうなのだ。Jobs がステージで語ったように、iCloud のデータが「ホンモノ」（the truth）だ。したがって不一致や統合の問題も生じない。ユーザーの目に触れるのは iCloud がノースカロライナのサーバーに保存しているものなのだ。
The gist is that Apple considers syncing to mean peer-to-peer — something where every device is on equal footing. With iCloud, the is one official data store: iCloud’s. As Jobs put it on stage, iCloud’s data is “the truth”. This means no conflicts or merging. What you see is what iCloud has stored on a server in North Carolina.

つい個々の事実にかかずらって大局を見逃してしまい勝ちだが、さすが Gruber は大したものだ。

最後にちょっとだけ姿を見せたノースカロライナの巨大データセンターが個人的には大変興味深かった。
iDataCenter 内部の写真が公開されたのはこれが初めてだ。これからいろいろな情報が聞こえてきそうで楽しみだ・・・
