《Update》足りないのは信頼じゃなくて容量だ

iOS 8.0.1 のアップデート騒動があったせいか iOS 8 の普及率が伸び悩んでいる。
１０月５日現在の普及率は 47% であることが開発者向けのサポートページにひっそりと示されている。２週間前と比べても１％しか増えていないそうだ。

アップルのアップデートを信頼しなくなった？
非常に心配だ — 時たましか利用しないユーザーがアップルのメジャーな iOS アップデートをもはや信頼しなくなったことの予兆ではないかと。去年１０月時点の iOS 7 の普及率は 70% 台で、その前年の iOS 6 よりも早かった。
Very worrisome — a canary-in-the-coal-mine indicator that casual users no longer trust Apple with major iOS updates. Last year the number for iOS 7 adoption was in the 70s in October, which was a faster adoption rate than iOS 6 the year prior.

John Gruber が昨日のコメントを訂正している。
「アップルを信頼しなくなった」と書いたら読者から Daring Fireball 始まって以来のＥメールや Twitter が殺到したらしい。「アップグレードしたかったのに容量が足りなかった」と。

最大の原因について私が間違えたことは明らかだ。自明な答えを見落としていた。iOS の OTA（Over The Air）アップデートには 5 GB の空き容量が必要だという点だ。それだけスペースに空きのあるひとは少ない。どうしていいか分からず、なんとかしたいとまでは思わないのだ。
But it’s very clear that I was wrong about what the primary factor is. The simple answer was staring me right in the face. It’s all about the over-the-air update requiring 5 GB of free storage space, and many people not having that much free space, and not knowing how or simply not wanting to deal with it.

空き容量を作る方法を一般ユーザーは知らない

iOS 8 の OTA アップデートには 5GB の空き容量が必要だ。多くのひと、とくにアイコンバッジが表示されないとアップデートしないひとには 5GB の空き容量なんてない。そんなひとはコンピュータにつなげば iTunes がアップデートやってくれるなんてことは知らない。また写真やビデオをコンピュータにダウンロードすれば空き容量が作れることも知らないのだ。
iOS 8 OTA update requires about 5GB of free space on the device. Most people, especially those who wouldn’t update until they get the badge on the settings app, don’t have 5GB free on their iPhone. They have no idea they can plug their iPhone into their computer and iTunes will update it. They don’t know they can free up space by downloading their pictures and videos to their computer.

OTA アップデートソフトの手直しが必要
これはアップルにとって深刻な問題だ。何故なら（8 GB はもちろん）16 GB デバイスのユーザーが自分で容量を増やす方法はないからだ。iOS 8 にアップデートできないデバイスでも OTA ソフトが許すならそうしたいと思うだろう。少ない容量でもアップデートできるようにアップルが OTA ソフトを手直ししないかぎり、iOS 8 の普及率は永久に停滞するかもしれない。
This is a serious problem for Apple, because all those 16 GB devices (let alone the 8 GB ones) aren’t going to suddenly gain more free storage space on their own. A lot of these devices might never get updated to iOS 8, but would if the OTA software worked. Unless they can rejigger the OTA software update to require less free space, iOS 8’s adoption rate might lag permanently.

iPhone ベースモデルの容量を増やすべき
なぜエントリーレベルモデルの容量がたった 16 GB のままなのか理解できない。
But I don’t understand why the entry level storage tier remained at a meager 16 GB. […]
iOS 自体でも約 4 GB を占めるので、まっさらの 16 GB デバイスでも残りはたった 12 GB だ。なんとしてでもアップルは新しい iPhone ベースモデルの容量を 32 GB に引き上げる措置を講じるべきだ。ましてやたった 8 GB の新しいモデルを売るなんて許し難い。
iOS itself takes up about 4 GB, so these 16 GB devices only have about 12 GB free right out of the box. If there is any way that Apple could have brought the base model storage up to 32 GB with the new iPhones, they should have. And it’s inexcusable that they’re still selling new devices with only 8 GB of storage.
