iPad の WiFi 問題

信頼すべき筋の情報によれば iOS 4.2 は遅れるようだ。iPad でゴールデンマスター（GM）を動かしている多くのユーザーが土壇場の今の時点になって Wi-Fi 接続の問題に遭遇しているためらしい。この問題は MacRumors フォーラム（こちら、こちら）、Twitter、アップル自身のディスカッションボードなどで広く取り上げられている。バグを写したビデオもある。

Basing on the information we got from a reliable source, it appears that iOS 4.2 has been delayed due to last-minute WiFi connection issues experienced by many users running the GM build on the iPad. The issues have been widely documented on MacRumors forums (here and here), Twitter and Apple’s own discussion boards, both by users and developers. You can check out a video of the bug in action below.

少なくとも１週間は遅れる

Wi-Fi の問題は１１月１日に GM がリリースされたことから生じた。アップルが明日にも GM の第二弾を出すかもしれないという話も耳にはいってくる。これにより少なくとも一週間はリリースが遅れるだろう。アップルは精力的にテストを行なっているようだが、公式リリースはテストの次の週までは出ないかもしれない。iOS 4.2 が感謝祭［注：１１月第４木曜日］まで遅れることはないと思うけれど・・・

Wifi issues came up with the GM build Apple released on November 1st. From what we’re hearing, Apple may release a second GM build as early as tomorrow to deal with WiFi issues. This will delay the release for at least a week while it is tested, but may not get public release until the following week as it appears Apple will be testing it vigorously. iOS 4.2 should, however, come out before Thanksgiving.

iPhone 3G のパフォーマンスは改善したか

予想どおり iOS 4.1 へのアップグレードがダウンロードできるようになった。

Macworld 誌がその第一印象をまとめている。

iPhone 3G に関連する部分だけを引用すると次のとおりだ。

一家の厄介者

前回の iOS 4 のときと同様、iOS 4.1 は iPhone 3GS や iPhone 4 だけでなく iPod touch の第２、第３、第４世代にも対応している。残念ながら iPhone 3G は一家の厄介者で、新機能の一部しか享受できない。iPad も同じく例外で、１１月にタブレット用の iOS 4.2 が出るまではこれらのメリットを享受できない。

Like iOS 4 before it, 4.1 is compatible with the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, as well as the second-, third-, and fourth- generation iPod touch models. Unfortunately, the iPhone 3G is the black sheep of the family here, as it only gets some of the features of the new software. And the iPad remains out in the cold until iOS 4.2 finally brings these features, along with the rest of iOS 4’s capabilities, to Apple’s tablet in November.

ほかにも iOS 4.1 は、論議を呼んだ iPhone 3G のパフォーマンスの低下問題も解決している。２年経ったこの機種は iOS 4 が出たことによって iPhone ファミリーの厄介者になった。マルチタスキングのような持てはやされる機能の恩恵を蒙ることができないからだ。しかもパフォーマンスの低下でスピードが遅くなり、信頼もおけなくなったことから、ユーザーに大きな苦痛を強いている。Philip Michaels［Macworld.com］は iOS 4 をインストールした iPhone 3G のことを「１日２箱を吸うヘビースモーカーが階段を上り下りしたとき」に例えている。

Apple also says that iOS 4.1 will fix another contentious problem: poor performance on the iPhone 3G. The two-year-old model of the iPhone has already gotten the short end of the stick with iOS 4, not receiving some of its much touted advancements such as multitasking. But slow and unreliable performance have only made the experience all the more painful. Macworld.com executive editor Philip Michaels described iOS 4 on the iPhone 3G as running “like a two-pack-a-day smoker after climbing a few flights of stairs.”

iOS 4.1 はそれなりに大部分の問題を解決したように思える。もっともハードウェア的にはアップルの他のデバイスより劣るため、その差を補うほどの改善ではないけれども・・・

iOS 4.1, for what it’s worth, seems to improve the problem in most respects, but it still can’t compensate for running on hardware that is a lot less powerful than what the current crop of Apple’s devices offers.

アップグレードしない理由はない

全体的に見て iOS 4.1 は十分アップグレードする価値がある。新しい機能についても、これまでの機能改善についてもそうだ。しかも無料なのだ。パフォーマンスが改善したことから、iPhone 3G ユーザーですら 4.1 の機能のいくつかが好きになるだろう。これまでの iOS アップグレード同様、最新バージョンにアップグレードしない理由はない。愛用機種が iPhone 4 ないし 3GS ならなおさらだ。

Overall, iOS 4.1 is a worthy update that packs both new capabilities as well as improvements to existing features—and all for free, too. With the performance improvements, even iPhone 3G users will find something to like in 4.1. As with most of Apple’s iOS updates, there’s pretty much no reason not to upgrade to the latest version, especially if your device of choice is an iPhone 4 or 3GS.

今回の iPod がらみの発表で一番待ちかねたのが iOS 4.1 へのアップグレードだった。

筆者の iPhone 3G を iOS 4 にしたことを何度も悔やんだが、元に戻す方法がないのだからひたすら次を待つより仕方ない。

今回もすぐ飛びついた。

筆者の場合は 99% がインターネットサーフィンなので、広告やサイドバーですぐハングアップする苦手のサイトをいくつかチェックしてみた。とりあえずは iOS 4 にする前のスピードが戻ってきた感じがする。

これでやっとネットサーフィンが快適になった・・・

iPhone 3G が重くなったらこうすればいいんだよ

iOS 4 にアップグレードした iPhone 3G の動作が重たくなったという苦情をあちこちで聞くようになった。パロったビデオまで登場する始末。

腰を上げたアップル

昨日のニュース［日本語］によれば、iOS 4 のアップグレードで iPhone 3G の動きが重たくなるという問題にアップルがやっと腰を上げた。Neowin 読者の情報によれば、簡単な方法で解決する。

After information surfaced yesterday that Apple is investigating sluggish performance on the iPhone 3G when running iOS 4, a Neowin reader posted what could be a quick and easy fix and the best part is, it actually works.

解決策

次のやり方でパフォーマンスの低下を改善できる。

設定 → 一般 → ホームボタン → Spotlight検索 → すべてのチェックを外す

こうすればバックグラウンドでのインデックス構築作業をストップすることができる。この効果は直ちに現れたと複数の読者が報告している。Neowin でも２台の iPhone 3G で別々に試してみたが確かにパフォーマンスの改善が見られた。

To remedy the sluggish performance (or at least one cause of it) go to “Settings->General->Home Button->Spotlight Search-> deselect every option” and this will stop background indexing on the phone. Several users reported that the fix showed immediate results and Neowin has observed improvements on two separate iPhone 3G devices.

すべての iPhone で効果があるわけではないが、少なくともアップグレードで重くなった iPhone 3G には明らかに効果がある。比較的簡単で、しかも試しても害がない。

While the fix may not work for all units, it is clearly working for some whose iPhone 3G has become sluggish after the upgrade. It’s a relatively simple fix and there is no harm to the device by testing it out.

品質管理の問題？

筆者の iPhone 3G も、スピードは遅くなるはよくフリーズするはで耐えられないほどだったが、てきめんに効果があった。

まだときどきフリーズするものの、ほとんどのイライラは解消された。カメラのシャッタースピードも大幅に改善された。
