グーグルは Google Reader の７月１日終了を明らかにした。

RSS の父と呼ばれる Dave Winer の「次回はちゃんとサービスにカネを払ってよ。そうすればちゃんと生き残れるんだよ。」（Next time, please pay a fair price for the services you depend on. Those have a better chance of surviving the bubbles.）ということばが印象的。

最もオモシロかったのは Marco Arment のコメントだ。

クライアントのイノベーションは停止した

今日の Google Reader は RSS クライアント同期の便利な手段だ。しかし iPhone が登場する前の 2005 年に発表されたとき、それまでのデスクトップ RSS クライアントの市場を完全に破壊してしまった。その後数年間 — iOS がデビューするまでは、クライアントのイノベーションは完全に停止した。iOS RSS クライアントの主なものは今でもまだ Google Reader にフィード検索および同期を依存したままだ。

Google Reader is a convenient way to sync between our RSS clients today, but back when it was launched in 2005 (before iPhones), it destroyed the market for desktop RSS clients. Client innovation completely stopped for a few years until iOS made it a market again — but every major iOS RSS client is still dependent on Google Reader for feed crawling and sync.

したがって Google Reader がなくなったあとの穴を塞ぐ必要があるが、ただちにこれという代わりはない。この十年間で初めて、RSS デスクトップアプリや同期のプラットフォームにおける本格的な革新と競争が可能になるワケだ。

Now, we’ll be forced to fill the hole that Reader will leave behind, and there’s no immediately obvious alternative. We’re finally likely to see substantial innovation and competition in RSS desktop apps and sync platforms for the first time in almost a decade.

すばらしいニュース

優れた代替手段が成熟して広くサポートされるようにまでの間は最悪かもしれないが・・・しかし長期的にみれば、これは間違いなくすばらしいニュースなのだ。

It may suck in the interim before great alternatives mature and become widely supported, but in the long run, trust me: this is excellent news.

自分はなくなっても全然寂しいとは思わない。そんなモノ使ったこともない。グーグルのようなビッグカンパニーの関心が自分のものと一致していて、すべての情報収集で信頼できるなんて、そんなことは信じないよ。

I won’t miss it. Never used the damn thing. Didn’t trust the idea of a big company like Google’s interests being so aligned with mine that I could trust them to get all my news.

メールボックス方式対大河方式

それに、ニュースを読むのにメールボックス方式が正しいとは思えない。未読の項目がいくつ残っているかなんてどうでもいいことだ。ニュースにはとうとうと流れる大河方式の方が好きだ。そんなすばらしい「大河」のセットを自分はいくつか持っている。それで十分ニュースやポッドキャストの情報を得ている。例えばこれ・・・

And besides, I didn’t think the mailbox approach to news was right. Who cares how many unread items there are. I like the river of news approach and I have a very fine set of rivers that keep me well supplied with news and podcasts. Have a look.

それなりに正当な対価を払って欲しいものだ

７月１日はさほど先のことではない。しかしなんとかなるだろう。次のときは、自分が頼っているサービスにはそれなりの正当な対価を払って欲しいものだ。そうすればバブルを乗り切るチャンスだってあるというもの・・・

グーグルが実名を使わせようとするわけ

［偽名か実名か・・・］

Google+ が実名使用にこだわって大量のアカウントを削除したため大騒ぎになった。

Robert Scoble は、Vic Gundotra［グーグルソーシャル部門担当上級副社長、マイクロソフト時代 Scoble の元上司］とやりとりで、次のように説明された［日本語］という。

・本名使用を義務づけていることはポジティブな雰囲気を作り出すためだと説明し、「レストランがシャツを着用していない人の入店を認めないのと同じことだ」と述べた。［CNET Japan 訳］

・Google+が本名使用を推奨する目的は、実際の名前や正式名にこだわっているのではなく、「一般名称の使用を義務づけて、奇妙な方法で自分の名前を綴る人々を排除することが目的だ。例えば、上下逆さまの文字や『god』のように明らかな偽名を使う人々だ」と説明した。［CNET Japan 訳］

グーグルがユーザーの実名を欲しがっているとしたら、それは単純にビジネス上の理由からだ。ユーザーのアカウントをグーグルのパートナー（銀行、小売店、スーパーマーケット、病院、航空会社など）からの購買行動と照合させることが可能になるからだ。グーグルのモバイル OS を使用している携帯電話の使用状況と照合させ、商売にすぐ使える形でユーザーの ID を提供し、そしてユーザーがインターネットで何をしているのかという（偽名で曇らされることのない）情報を彼らに提供するためなのだ。

There’s a very simple business reason why Google cares if they have your real name. It means it’s possible to cross-relate your account with your buying behavior with their partners, who might be banks, retailers, supermarkets, hospitals, airlines. To connect with your use of cell phones that might be running their mobile operating system. To provide identity in a commerce-ready way. And to give them information about what you do on the Internet, without obfuscation of pseudonyms.

簡単にいえば、実名の方が偽名より価値があるというわけだ。

Simply put, a real name is worth more than a fake one.

すべてはカネが絡んでいる。グーグルのソーシャルネットワークを使わせたいのも、Mark Zuckerberg のサービスを使わせたくないのもそのせいだ。彼らが求めているのはカネなのだ

That’s really what it’s about, money. That’s why they want you to use their social network, and why they want you to not use Zuck’s. Because they want the money.
