Why is the time on all Apple Watch ads set to 10:09:30? | Quora

Hamilton

In the early fall of 1926, the Hamilton Watch Company started the now common practice of setting all of their watches to 10:10:30. Previously many watch makers either chose random times or were using the “frown” with the watch set to 8:20:30, the 10:10:30 position connoted a smile. Just about all of the major watch maker standardize to this time for many reasons, primarily:

– The hands are not overlapping, so they’re fully visible displaying their styling
– The hands are symmetrical, humans prefer symmetry over asymmetry
– The logo of a watch is normally placed below the 12 and the hands of the watch are clear of this area
– Other displays in the watch, like secondary dials (stopwatch) and date are normally positioned at the 3, 6 or 9, will be visible

The Apple Watch is, well, a watch and Apple took great pains to richly create a unique and stunning analog time face experience. Even though one could use a digital watch face, Apple wanted to show the timelessness of the analog face. Apple chose the 10:09:30 time setting using the same foundations as the Hamilton watch company chose the 10:10:30 time in 1926. Apple second hand is a bit earlier then most watch makers for a number of reasons. Apple also broke from the standard Timex has used for decades, 10:09:36. I think Apple chose this time for reasons of symmetry, 10:09:30 looks better, it anticipates 10:10 and perhaps that in and of itself may be a deep symbolic meaning. Apple likes symbolic meanings.

Apple usually has a symbolic reason for just about all elements in their marketing and advertising. Some of it is more obvious then others. For example, the original iPhones had the time set to 10:42:00. I wrote about this in detail here: Brian Roemmele’s answer to History of Apple Inc.: In iPhone advertisements, why is the time always set to 9:42 a.m. on the clock?. This was the exact time that Steve Jobs announced the iPhone during the Macworld conference. They timed the presentation to the exact minute and when the iPhone was first displayed, it showed 9:42. This has since been changed to 9:41 for the iPhone 6 as this is the time that the iPad was announced. Some assert that the new iPhones are more iPad then iPhone.

Apple Watch

The Apple Watch will be released in the early spring of 2015 and will likely become iconic faster then even Apple has predicted. The Apple Watch analog watch face will be forever frozen with a symmetrical smile showing the world Apple Time 10:09:30 in the official images that will likely dominate advertisements.

What is Apple’s new Secure Enclave and why is it important? | Quora

★What is Apple’s new Secure Enclave and why is it important?

– A Seven Year Apple Odyssey That Ended At The Enclave

In the torrent of the billions of words already written about Touch ID very, very few people have really understood just how revolutionary this really is. Apple not only has developed one of the most accurate mass produced biometric security devices, they have also solved critical problems with how the data from this device will be encrypted, stored and secured. Apple Calls this the Secure Enclave and it is a relatively new concept.

– The World Of The Secure Enclave

– iPhone Gets Help From Extra ARMs

– The A7 Was Built For High Security

– How Does The Secure Enclave Work?

– The A7 Is Optimized For Secure Mobile Payments

Thus we can really see just how deep the security runs in DNA of the A7 processor. The deep level hardware based secure architecture is rather rock solid. It would require a rather large magnitude of hardware hacking to even attempt access to the data stored in the Secure Enclave.

– Additional Security

To use Touch ID you will also have to create a passcode as a backup. Only that passcode can unlock the phone if the phone is either rebooted (example full battery drain) or hasn’t been unlocked for 48 hours. This is a genius feature that is meant to set a time limit for criminals if try to find a way to circumvent the fingerprint scanner.

– Huge Developer Opportunity

There are dozens of applications and use cases on the roadmap and I am certain a developer economy will build around this amazing technology. One that is very clear is retail payments and Apple will have quite a number of unique ways they will solve real problems for merchants and iPhone users. I can say this aspect of Touch ID will be more magical then what we have seen thus far. There will be connections to iBeacons and the amazing technology Apple just acquired through Passif.

– Touch ID Is Paradigm Changing

Apple has taken a very slow and methodical approach with the release of Touch ID. We can see that there was a tremendous amount of amazing work that has gone into this project. All of this convergence took over seven years of very hard work. It includes many patent applications, the acquisition of AuthenTec, the selection of the A7 processor and the integration of the TrustZone suite all baked together into what we now know as Touch ID.

This has been a long journey that has only just been made public and I am rather certain that Steve Jobs would be quite proud.
