Microsoft absolutely hates this vision of tablet computing. Microsoft has always been first and foremost a PC company, and approaches every problem with a PC mindset. The company has made billions of dollars selling PC applications such as Microsoft Office, and it desperately wants that bonanza to continue in the mobile computing era. So the firm is highly motivated to create a tablet that doubles as a PC.

Microsoft’s Surface tablets have a funny shape and muddled user interface that make them a poor alternative to a full-fledged PC. And they’re too complex and expensive to be a serious alternative to an iPad or Android tablet. In its attempt to create a product that does everything well, it’s wound up with a product that’s not that good at anything. And its tablets are going to continue failing as long as Microsoft is convinced that it needs to create a tablet that’s also a PC.

iPad 風のフォームファクタに限る必要はない

ここで議論のため敢えて反対の立場［the devil’s advocate：悪魔の代弁者］をとってみたい。自分はもうマイクロソフトが iPad とは何か、何故人気があるのかということを十分理解していると思う。彼らが Surface Pro 3 を通していいたいのは、タブレットのフォームファクタ（形状）は必ずしも iPad 風なデバイスに限られない、本格的な PC にとっても優れたフォームファクタだということなのだ。

I’ll take the devil’s advocate position here. I think Microsoft now fully understands what the iPad is and why it’s popular. What they’re saying with the Surface Pro 3 is that the tablet form factor isn’t necessarily only for iPad-style devices, but that it’s a good form factor for full-featured PCs as well.

iOS 8 is likely to supercharge the functionality of Apple’s iPad with a new split-screen multitasking feature, according to sources with knowledge of the enhancement in development. These people say that the feature will allow iPad users to run and interact with two iPad applications at once. Up until now, each iPad application either developed by Apple or available on the App Store is only usable individually in a full-screen view.

とてもクールだ。ただしスプリットスクリーンモードにどうやって切り替えるのかとても興味がある。iPad で２つのアプリを並べるというのは言うは易しだが、その実装は容易ではない。今どこにいて次にどこに行くのか、絶対に混乱したり分からなくなることのない iPad のシンプルで素晴らしい機能を損なうことなく実装するのはとくに難しい。

Sounds cool. I’m very curious to see how you get into (and back out of) this mode, though. It’s easy to say you want to see two apps side-by-side on the iPad. It’s not easy at all to implement such a feature without losing the wonderful can’t get lost/can’t get confused about where you are or how you got there simplicity of the iPad today.

それもずい分昔の話だ。その後どんどん進歩している。マイクロソフトも進歩を許されるべきだ。

That was a long time ago. We’ve all moved on. Microsoft should be allowed to move on, too.

しかしどうやったらそう出来るのか自分には分からない。政府機関や銀行・病院のような退屈な大企業ではもっと古い Windows 2000 が未だに広く使われているのが現状だ。（Windows 2000 は当時としては素晴らしいものだった。しかしどんなものだったかといえば、Windows 2000 を搭載した自分の最初のコンピュータは初代 iPhone とほぼ同じ CPU パワーで、RAM 容量は全く同じだった。）

I don’t know how they can, though. I still see the even older Windows 2000 in widespread use, usually in government and big, boring businesses like banks and hospitals. (Windows 2000 was fantastic at the time, but to give you an idea of what that time was, the first computer I ran it on had approximately the same CPU power, and exactly the same amount of RAM, as the first iPhone.)

本当にサポートをヤメられるか

一般ユーザーはアップグレードには関心がない。Windows XP はまだ「ちゃんと動いている」。しかしアップグレードとなると残念ながら話は別だ。マイクロソフトは本当にセキュリティパッチを出さなくても済むだろうか？ いつかは出さざるを得なくなるのではないかと自分は思う。ともかくこうしてボットネット［botnet：悪意のある攻撃者に乗っ取られたコンピュータのネットワーク］が始まるのだ。

People just don’t care to upgrade. Windows XP still “works” for them, and the upgrades are different, which is bad. Can Microsoft really stop issuing security patches? I guess they have to at some point, but this is how botnets start.

A symbolic moment, this: in Q4 2013 the number of computers* sold by Apple was larger than the number of Windows PC sold globally. If you add Windows Phone to the mix they’re more or less exactly equal.

マイクロソフト CEO の後任がやっと決まりそうな気配だが、マイクロソフトの顧客についての Marco Arment のコメントがオモシロい。

変化が嫌いな顧客

マイクロソフトの顧客は変化が嫌いだ。彼らは自分たちが欲しいものを — 自分たちの望みどおりに、サプライズなどなしに — 手に入れることに慣れている。そうでなければ彼らはガマンできないのだ。

Microsoft’s customers don’t like change. They’re accustomed to getting everything they want, exactly as they want it, with no surprises. They won’t tolerate anything else.

古いバージョンも継続しろ

マイクロソフトがあまりに違ったものをリリースすれば、法人顧客は単に買うことを拒否するだけでなく、古いバージョンを未来永劫売り続けるよう要求する。そしてマイクロソフトは常に屈服する。ほかに出来ることなどないのだ。彼らは法人顧客から — 収益が漸減する世界で Windows や Office の新バージョンへの移行コストが増加する法人顧客から — アップグレードによる収入をあげようと必死なのだ。

If Microsoft releases anything too different, enterprise customers will simply refuse to buy it, demanding that Microsoft keep selling the old version indefinitely. And every time, Microsoft caves, because what else are they going to do? They’re desperate for upgrade revenue from business customers who see diminishing returns and increasing transition costs with each new version of diminishing returns.

ソフトウェアの巨人が昨年リリースした Windows 8.1 にはブート時に Metro インターフェイスをバイパスするオプションが含まれていたが、近々行なわれる Windows 8.1 のアップデートではこのオプションがデフォルトで有効になる、とマイクロソフトの計画に詳しいソースが The Verge に明らかにした。Update 1 の多くの変更と同じく、この後戻り措置はキーボードとマウスを使うユーザーの OS を改善するためだという。

While the software giant originally released Windows 8.1 last year with an option to bypass the “Metro” interface at boot, sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans have revealed to The Verge that the upcoming update for Windows 8.1 will enable this by default. Like many other changes in Update 1, we’re told the reason for the reversal is to improve the OS for keyboard and mouse users.

かつてないほどの抜本的革新

マイクロソフトが抜本的な変化を行なえないのではない。Windows 8 は Windows 95 以来のもっとも大胆な動きというだけでなく、決して悪いものではない。素晴らしいものではないかもしれないが、決して悪くはない。マイクロソフトはユーザーインターフェイスをかつてないほど抜本的に革新したのだ。

It’s not that Microsoft is incapable of making radical changes. Not only was Windows 8 the most bold move they’ve made since Windows 95, but it wasn’t even bad. It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t bad. Microsoft truly innovated with the UI to a greater extent than we’ve ever seen from them.

新しいバージョンの採用はひどいものだった。PC メーカーは（Vista のときのように）Windows 7 へダウングレードできることを謳った。Surface タブレットの売れ行きも惨めなものだった。Windows 8 はマイクロソフトの歴史の中でも最大の失敗だった。

Adoption has been abysmal, PC manufacturers are advertising Windows 7 downgrades as features (much like they did from Vista to XP), and the Surface tablets have sold very poorly. Windows 8 has been one of the biggest disasters in Microsoft’s history.

メディアやアナリストに当時いわれたことや、普通に考えられるすべてのことをマイクロソフトはやった。アップルのようになれと誰もが圧力を加えた。だからマイクロソフトはそうしたのだ。

They did everything that the press, analysts, and prevailing wisdom at the time were telling them to do. Everyone was pressuring them to be more like Apple, so they tried.

マイクロソフトがヘマしたことが問題なのではない。（いくつかヘマをやらなかったワケはないが。）マイクロソフトがアップルではなく、マイクロソフトの顧客がアップルの顧客ではなかったことが問題なのだ。マイクロソフトは顧客にアップル的な姿勢を売り込もうとしたが、顧客のほとんどはアップル的姿勢を望まず、容認もしなかった。彼らはアップルの顧客ではなかったからだ。

The problem isn’t that they botched it (although they did, in some ways). The problem is that Microsoft isn’t Apple, and Microsoft’s customers aren’t Apple’s customers. They tried selling a more Apple-like attitude to their customers, most of whom don’t want and won’t tolerate an Apple-like attitude. That’s why they’re not Apple customers.

マイクロソフトの顧客は、常に望みどおりのものを要求し、常にそれを獲得してきた。それが PC ビジネスの低・中層に仕えることの現実であり、まさに法人ビジネスの現実なのだ。

Microsoft’s customers have always demanded, and will always get, exactly what they ask for. That’s the reality of serving the low- to midrange-PC business, and it’s sure as hell the reality of the enterprise business.
