NeXT の時代から終始 Mac OS X に携わってきた Bertrand Serlet がアップルを去る。

なぜ今の時期に

Mac ソフトウェアエンジニアリングの上級副社長 Bertrand Serlet がアップルを去る。この１０年間彼は Mac OS X の何たるかを定義し、それを見直し、繰り返しアップデートしてきた。しかし今の時期に去るのはなぜか？

So Bertrand Serlet, senior vice president of Mac software engineering and the guy who spent the past decade defining, redefining and iterating Mac OS X, is leaving Apple. Why now?

計画的禅譲

アップルの公式説明は「彼が製品よりサイエンスにより注力したいから」というものだ。Serlet のマッドサイエンティスト的雰囲気や Xerox PARC および NeXT での経歴を考えればもっともらしく聞こえる。しかし OS X の次期バージョン Lion の登場を控えているこの時期の発表というタイミングはいささか妙に思える。しかしほんとのことをいえば、これは計画的禅譲なのだ。

The party line says he’s decided “to focus less on products and more on science.” That’s a plausible explanation, given Serlet’s mad scientist airs and background, which includes stints at Xerox PARC and NeXT. And while the timing of the announcement might seem odd–Apple is ramping up for the release of Lion, the next iteration of OS X–the truth of the matter is that this is a planned transition.

前触れはあった

昨年 Serlet の代わりに Craig Federighi が Lion のプレビューデモをやったのにはわけがある。Serlet が最近アップル株を手放したのにもわけがある。二人ともこの日のために準備していたのだ。複数の情報筋によれば、アップルにとって OS X の重要性がが小さくなったとか、これからの戦略について見解の相違があったからということではまったくない。

There’s a reason Craig Federighi, who is to take over Serlet’s role, handled demo duties for Apple’s Lion preview demo last year (see video below). And there’s a reason Serlet has been selling off Apple shares recently. They’ve been preparing for this day, which sources tell me is not at all the result of a spat over differences in strategic direction or the diminishment of OS X’s importance to Apple.

単なる役員交代

「とげとげしい関係なんてない」とアップルに近い情報筋のひとりは語る。「Bertrand はアップルを去る時期がきたと考え、Avie Tevanian（ソフトウェアエンジニアリングの前上級副社長）が彼に譲ったように、今度は彼が Craig に譲るだけの話だ。単なる役員交代というわけだ。」

“There’s no acrimony there,” one source close to the company told me. “Bertrand’s just decided it’s his time to move on. Avie (Tevanian, former senior vice president of software engineering) handed off to him and now he’s handing off to Craig. It’s just a changing of the guard.”

金字塔としての Lion

いいかえれば、ある意味 OS X が iOS に取り込まれ、スターとしての Serlet の地位に陰りが出始めたから去るのではない。彼が去るのは今がその時期であり、アップルにおける彼のレガシーの金字塔として Lion がふさわしいと考えるからこそ去るのだ。

In other words, Serlet isn’t leaving because because Lion heralds some subsuming of OS X to iOS and the setting of his star at Apple. He’s leaving because he feels it’s time and likely because Lion seems a perfect monument to his legacy at Apple.

Jobs との確執とは無関係という John Paczkowski の指摘はそのとおりかもしれない。

そうだとしても、ひとつの時代の終わりという感じは否めない。

NeXT から来たベテラントリオ（Avads “Avie” Tevanian、Bertrand Serlet、Scott Forstall の３人組）の上にも確実に時は過ぎているようだ。

Serlet がウインドウズ Vista を皮肉るビデオを改めて見ると、なかなかおもしろい人物だったように思われる。

最も重要なボス

アップルで働いた数年間、Bertrand は最も重要なボスだった。その後 2003 年にクビになった。多分彼のさしがねだろう。

For several years Bertrand was the most important manager in my life at Apple, before I was laid off in 2003, probably as a result of a decision he made.

目を白黒させた

Bertrand の最初の印象といえば、彼がしゃべるたび頭痛がしたことだ。98〜99 年頃だったと思うが、彼は次期 Mac OS はハードディスクを持たないコンピュータでも動くシンクライアント OS［thin client OS］になるだろうという話をしたものだ。みんなは目を白黒させた。

My first observation about him was that every time I had to hear him talk, I got a headache. That was back when he was telling us (around ’98-’99, maybe) that the next Mac OS was likely to be a thin client OS on a computer that had no hard disk. We rolled our eyes.

カルチャー戦争真っ最中

その後間もなく、経験を積んだアップルのソフトウェアエンジニアを前にして、間違いを犯さないでコードをカット＆ペーストする方法について講義してくれたものだ。自分のエンジニアとしての全キャリアの中で、このときほどバカにされたと感じたことはなかった。NeXT とアップルのカルチャー戦争は真っ盛りだっだ。

Pretty soon he was standing up in front of seasoned Apple software engineers and lecturing us on how not to make mistakes when cutting and pasting code. I said at that time that I had never felt so thoroughly disrespected as an engineer in my entire career. The NeXT/Apple culture wars were at their height.

嫌なヤツ

［その後 Bertrand とは直接に話をするのを避けるようになった。］いいたいことは、自分の目から見て、彼が一緒に仕事することなど考えられない嫌なヤツに思えたことだ。OS X の仕事を数年したが、2003 年にはクビになった。・・・

What I’m saying, from my point of view, he was an absolute bitch to work for.

And in 2003 after working with OS X for a few years, I was laid off. […]

Snow Leopard

その後、Snow Leopard のことを耳にしたときだった、Bertrand がやろうとしていたのはこれだったのかとやっと分かった。システムが本来必要とするもの（ユーザー機能ではなく）をリリースすることだ。Steve Jobs を納得させてその気にさせるには大論争が必要だったに違いない。ともかく Jobs は納得した。Snow Leopard の内部に隠された Grand Central Dispatch のような機能こそ、OS やアプリケーションのフレームワークにとって大きな飛躍だった。その時になって Bertrand に対して大きな敬意を感じたものだ。

And then, when I started hearing about Snow Leopard, I realized that this was what Bertrand had been aiming at all along: the release where the system — not the user features — really got what it needed. I suspect he had to win a big argument with Steve Jobs to get to that point. And he got there. Snow Leopard’s under-the-hood features, such as Grand Central Dispatch, were huge leaps forward in operating system and application frameworks technology. I gained a great deal of respect for Bertrand at that point.

今考えれば・・・

今になってみれば、素晴しい技術的洞察力をもちながら、NeXT より大きなグループを管理した経験をほとんど持たない比較的若い青年が、アップルと NeXT の陰謀と裏切りの中で、まだ不完全なビジョンを抱えて必死になっていたのだと思う。ほとんど知識のないアップルという会社にとって、なんとか真に重要な OS 技術をもたらそうとして・・・

With hindsight, I can look back at a relatively young man with brilliant technical insight and very little experience managing a group larger than the one at NeXT, clambering upward through the thicket of Apple/NeXT intrigues and of half-baked visions for Apple — a company he knew very little about — to find his way to do something really significant for OS technology at Apple.

今後の健勝を祈りたい。
