Sources who declined to be named because they are forbidden to talk publicly about Apple’s plans tell AllThingsD that the company has been “borrowing” engineers from the OS X 10.9 team as part of an effort to double down on iOS 7. “Yes, yes — it’s essentially a repeat of the iPhone/Leopard scenario,” one source said, referring to Apple’s 2007 decision to pull engineers from OS X 10.5 to work on iPhone. “Not as much of a fire drill, though. It will ship on time.”

Ive になって初めてのアップデート

なんでまたアップルはエンジニアたちを掻き集めねばならないのか？ それは今回が相当大きいアップデートだからだ。インダストリアルデザイン担当上級副社長 Jony Ive が今やインターフェイスのデザインも総括しているので、アップルはソフトウェアとハードウェアを一体化したアプローチをとっているのだと複数のソースはいう。Ive がアップルのハードウェアにもたらしたスパルタ的でエレガントな美しさがこんどはソフトウェアにももたらされようとしているのだ。先週 9to5Mac の Mark Gurman が、iOS 7 では派手さよりシンプルさを重視する「フラットな」デザインがメインになると書いた。自分も複数のソースから、「派手さをなくした」（de-glitzed）のが iOS 7 だという似たような表現を聞いている。

So what is it about iOS 7 that has caused Apple to rally additional engineering resources? It’s a pretty big update. With SVP of Industrial Design Jony Ive now oveerseeing interface design, sources say Apple has adopted a unified approach to software and hardware design. And evidently the spartan, elegant aesthetic that Ive has developed around Apple’s hardware is now being brought to bear on its software, as well. Last week, 9to5Mac’s Mark Gurman reported that iOS 7 would feature a “flat” design that favors simplicity over flash. I’ve heard similar descriptions from sources who say iOS 7 is iOS “de-glitzed.”

脱 Forstall 化

“Put it this way,” said one source who has been briefed on iOS. “You know Game Center’s green felt craps table? Well, goodbye, Circus Circus.”

驚くことはない。「縫い目のついたレザーや木目調の華やかさといった skeuomorphic なデザインの主唱者だった Scott Forstall がアップルを去り、その分 Ive の役割が大きくなったので、iOS 7 にはペンキの塗り替えが必要なのだ」と自分が話をしたアップルの元および現従業員たちはいう。「必要とされていた脱 Forstall 化だよ」というものもいた。

Not a surprise, really. With Scott Forstall — an advocate for flashy, skeuomorphic design and its stitched-leather and faux-wood-grain flourishes — now gone from Apple, and Ive in an expanded role, the current and former Apple employees I’ve spoken to say iOS 7 was destined for a new coat of paint. As one said, “Sounds like a much-needed ‘de-Forstallization.’

デザインをいじるなら

しかし iOS 7 から skeuomorphic 的な光沢がすべてなくなってしまうワケではない。2007 年に iPhone が発表されて以来持っている OS のルックスはあまり変更されていない。アップルがデザインをいじるつもりなら、まさに今がその時だ。BlackBerry 10 や Windows Phone のモバイル OS には改善の余地がまだまだあるとすれば、アップルとしては iOS がホコリをかぶって見えるリスクをあえて冒すことはできないのだ。

Which is not to say that the design of iOS 7 is entirely about removing skeuomorphic gloss. Fact is, Apple hasn’t much changed the operating system’s look since the iPhone was introduced in 2007. If the company has good ideas for design tweaks, it’s about time it implemented them. With new mobile operating systems like BlackBerry 10 and Windows Phone proving that there’s plenty of room left for innovation in the market, Apple can ill afford even the risk of the perception that iOS might be getting dusty.

Apple’s challenge, then, is to overhaul the look and feel of the OS while retaining the intuitiveness that has made it so popular. “The key question here is whether those changes deliver on the core Apple promise of improving customers’ ability to make productive use of the device and deliver a clearly superior experience,” Forrester analyst Charles Golvin told AllThingsD. “Presumably they don’t need the flashy stuff to realize that vision.”

WWDC に代わるものはあるか

Instapaper を手放した Marco Arment に対する反応でいちばんオモシロかったのは John Siracusa のツィートだった。

錯乱状態になって

なんとかして WWDC のチケットを入手しようとしたのに出来なかった Marco Arment は、錯乱状態になって自分の代表作である iOS アプリを売り払い、残りの人生を Android 開発に賭けることにした。 — John Siracusa

Accidental Tech Podcast で歯に衣着せずいえる間柄の John Siracusa だからいえるジョークだが、直前のポッドキャストでも WWDC のチケットが入手できなかったらどうするという話で大いに盛り上がっている。

３０万人もいる世界の iOS・OS X 開発者のたった 1.5% しか出席できないのなら、いっそ WWDC なんかなくしてしまえという Daniel Jalkut のような意見だって出てくる。

それに対して Marco Arment が WWDC への熱い思いを語っているのが興味深い。

大きくなり過ぎた需要

アップルは WWDC［Worldwide Developers Conference：ワールドワイドデベロッパカンファレンス、世界開発者会議］に対する過剰ともいえる需要に対応すべく毎年新しいやり方を試みている。

登録したすべての開発者に、会議終了後速やかに WWDC ビデオが入手できるようにすることは既にやっている。それも入手時期が毎年早まっている。また定期的に小規模の開発者エバンジェリストチーム（Developer Evangelism team）を世界中に送り出して小規模の「Tech Talks」（１日間の無料ミニ WWDC みたいなもの）を開いている。また WWDC に出たことのない人を優先する措置も講じている。

They already make the WWDC videos available promptly after the conference to all registered developers — and every year, they come out faster. They already periodically send the small Developer Evangelism team around the world doing small “Tech Talks” (free, one-day mini-WWDCs, effectively), and they give attendance priority to people who haven’t attended WWDC.

だがそれでも十分ではない。

It hasn’t helped.

拡大するか回数を増やすか

WWDC の規模を大きくするか回数を増やして欲しいというのが開発者の希望だが、そのどちらも大きな問題がある。どうすればうまく拡大できるかというアイデアを Jeff LaMarche が説明しているが、アップルがそうするとは思えないし、たとえそうしても入手できるチケットの数がせいぜい２倍か３倍になる程度だろう。むしろ大きくなることで WWDC がダメになってしまうかもしれない。１分以内に売り切れるようでは入手できる可能性が大して増えるとも思えない。

Developers usually suggest expanding the conference or having more conferences throughout the year, but both of those have big problems. Jeff LaMarche explains why and proposes a sensible expansion idea, but I don’t think Apple would do it, and it would probably only increase the number of available tickets by two or three times at most — the additional scale may ruin the conference, and when you’re already selling out in less than a minute, it’s not going to make a huge difference to availability.

いっそやめてしまえば

Daniel Jalkut は WWDC そのものをやめてしまえという思い切った提案をしている。代わりに開発者がオンラインで入手できるリソースやドキュメンテーションを増やせばいいと。紙上論としてはもっともらしいが、それではアップルコミュニティの精神が損なわれてしまう。開発者向けリソースを増やすべきは当然だが　オンラインのリソースでは提供できない多くのものを WWDC は提供してくれるからだ。

Daniel Jalkut came up with the creative proposal of Apple ending WWDC entirely, then addressing our demands by significantly expanding the online developer resources and documentation. This sounds plausible on paper, but would crush the spirit of our community. Apple should certainly expand the developer resources, but WWDC provides a lot that online resources can’t.

WWDC has an energy. It’s a huge rally to juice developers’ confidence and enthusiasm for the platform. Every year, I’ve been filled with an insatiable desire to just make something the whole time, and that energy gives me a boost for months afterward.

終日没頭できる素晴らしさ

どうしても行きたいとみんなが思うのは、それが素晴らしいからだ。

The reason we all want to go so badly is because it’s great.

その１週間は出席することでその素晴しさを学ぼうとする。それだけが仕事になる。１週間は職場や家庭の義務から開放されて、終日セッションに時間を費やし、同じ業界のすばらしい友人や同僚に会い、テクノロジーやコミュニティ、カルチャーに没頭するのだ。

When you go, you’ve allocated that week to learning this stuff. That’s your only job. You leave most of your workplace and family obligations behind for a week so you can spend all day in sessions, meeting great friends and colleagues in the industry, and immersing yourself in the technology, community, and culture.

その場にいなくても、知識や技術の恩恵の一部は得られるが、自宅で独りでビデオを見ていても実際に出掛けたときの興奮には及ばない。それに家でビデオを見ても、毎日朝から晩まで一週間の間それだけをやるワケではないので、それほど多くのものは見れないのだ。

Some of the academic and technical benefits can be had outside of that environment, but watching the videos alone at home doesn’t bring the spirit of actually being there. And since watching those videos at home is never going to be your all-day-every-day-for-a-week job, how likely are you to actually watch many of them?

大きなチャンス

それに、通常のコミュニティの規模も分裂して、ますます小規模の、独立したものになっているのに比べれば、まだまだ WWDC は大きな集まり（the big one）なのだ。みんなが毎年出席したいと思うもの、いちばん意義があるもの、アップルや他の多くのひとといちばん会う機会があるもの、しかも熱狂的なアップルキーノート — それは新しい OS や新しい機能、新しい API、そしてわれわれのアプリに新しいマーケットの可能性を与えてくれるものだ — で開幕する、そんな大きなチャンスなのだ。

And while the usual community has been disrupted and we’re likely to see continued growth of the smaller, independent conferences, WWDC is still going to be the big one: the one that most of us try to attend every year, the one that matters most, the one with the best access to the most people (Apple or otherwise), and the one that Apple kicks off with an enthusiastic keynote that excites us with new OSes, new features, new APIs, and potential new markets for our apps.

いつまでも・・・

アップルが WWDC への過大な需要にどんな形で応えようとも、多くのひとがアップルプラットフォームの開発をしたいと望む限り、またビデオやドキュメンテーションではホンモノに取って代われない以上、WWDC への需要はいつまでも存在し続けるだろう。

No matter what Apple does to address the extreme demand for WWDC, that demand will always be there as long as so many people want to develop apps for Apple platforms, and no amount of videos or documentation can replace the real thing.

ちょうどアップルも WWDC のチケットを入手できなかったひとのための方策を講じている。

ストレートな物言いをするひとが少なくなった今、Marco Arment のような率直な発言は貴重だと思う。

優れたソフトウェアエンジニアであり、Instapaper という優れたソフトにしてサービスを独りで開発・運営してきたにも関わらず、奢り高ぶることなく率直で謙虚なところは大好きだ。

これまでもずいぶん彼の書いたものを取り上げてきたが、分かりやすいことばで広く読者に — ときにはアップルに対しても — 語りかける彼の文章は、自分の立ち位置を十分意識した上でいちばん大切なことを発信していこうとする意欲に溢れているように見える。

Instapaper の重荷から解放されたせいか、ぐっと出番が増したようでこれからも楽しみだ・・・

アップルは本日、恒例の WWDC の幕開けとなるキーノートへメデイアを招待した。キーノートは６月１１日午前１０時より Moscone West で行なわれる。

Apple today invited media to a keynote kicking off its annual Worldwide Developers Conference. The keynote will be held at 10:00 am on Monday June 11 at Moscone West.

Tim Cook かどうかは不明

キーノートを行なうのが誰なのかアップルは明らかにしなかった。その栄誉はアップルの CEO が担うのが通例だ。Tim Cook 以外のアップル社員を登壇させて、新製品のデモや今後のアップル方針について説明をさせるのは前例がない。

Apple didn’t say who would give the keynote address, but typically its the company’s CEO that does the honor. It wouldn’t be unheard of for Tim Cook to invite other Apple employees on stage to give demos of new Apple products and explain Apple’s direction in the coming year.

WWDC 2012 — 発表即完売！

アップルが Macworld を撤退したあと唯一残った定期イベントが WWDC だ。

その WWDC が発表されたと思ったら直ちに売り切れた。

７インチ iPad は存在する：John Gruber

久しぶりに John Gruber がポッドキャストで思いっきりしゃべっている。

アップルラボには７インチの小型 iPad が存在するという話も飛び出した。

自分のポッドキャスト「The Talk Show」で、7.85 インチ iPad は発売されるのだろうかと相方の Dan Benjamin に尋ねられて、Gruber はつぎのように答える。［１時間 17 分ごろから］

7.85 インチ iPad はすでに存在する

う〜ん、分からないよ。ボクが知っているのは、アップルラボにはテスト用のヤツがあるってこと・・・ 7.85 インチで 1024×768 の iPad ・・・ 9.7 インチの iPad をちょっと小さくしただけのヤツ。アプリがちゃんと動くために、コンパイルし直すこともデザインし直すことも必要ない。そのまま小型化しただけの iPad だ。

“Well, I don’t know. What I do know is that they have one in the lab…a 7.85 inch iPad that runs at 1024×768… it’s just like the 9.7″ iPad shrunk down a little bit. Apps wouldn’t need to be recompiled or redesigned to work optimally on it. It’s just the iPad smaller.

Gruber：新しいやり方ではマージング［merging：複数のファイルやデータ、プログラムなどを決められたルールに従って一つに統合すること］や不一致は生じない。・・・しかしそれは同期の持つ技術的困難さをアップルが魔法のように解決したという意味ではない。

Gruber: The new way does not involve merging and conflicts. […] It doesn’t mean that Apple has magically solved the tech difficulties of syncing. […]

オフラインで加えられた変更がどんなものであれ、iCloud ではそんなダイアログは出ないだろうとボクは思う。不一致らしきものがあったとすると、サーバー上の iCloud はどれがベストか（アップルのいい方では「ホンモノ（truth）」か）を自ら判断する。「ホンモノはクラウドにある」（The Truth is in the Cloud.）と Steve Jobs がいったのはそういうことなのだ。iTunes はどれが正しいかを判断する。そういうことだ。その正しいものを iCloud は、異なるバージョンの存在する同じアカウント持つデバイスにプッシュする。だがここにトリックがある。もしそれが正しいものでなかったらどうなるかというわけ。サーバー側ではすべてのものが記憶されるだろう。バージョニング［versioning：バージョン管理］とほぼ同じだ。「住所録を調べなさい」といったダイアログが出るだろう。「前のバージョンから正しいものを選択しなさい」といったダイアログもあるだろう。それをユーザーが選択してクラウドへプッシュし、「これがホンモノだ」と教える。アップルはこれをそのままプッシュするのだ。

In iCloud I believe you will never be presented with such a dialog, no matter how much has changed in one of the instances while it was “offline”. The server-side iCloud, when there seemingly is a conflict, will make a decision and it will decide which one is the best (in Apple’s terms the “truth”). That is what Steve Jobs means when he says “The Truth is in the Cloud.” iTunes will decide which one is right and that’s it. iCloud will push that right one to any device that has this account that has a different version. But, here’s the trick – what happens if it’s not the right one? On the server side, it will remember all of the other ones, almost like versioning. There will be some sort of interface like “go and look at your contacts.” There will be some sort of way to say “show me previous versions and let me pick the one that is right”. You pick it and push it back up into the cloud and tell it “that’s the truth” and Apple will push it out.

iCloud がホンモノを決める

Gruber：アップルはそうはいっていないが、サーバー上の iCloud は公開されることのない不一致を検出したときはどれがホンモノかを決定する。iCloud は「ブラックボックス」みたいに機能するのだ。ほとんどの場合一番最後に行なわれた変更を採用するだろう。しかし、それを（あとで変更できるように）決めないままにしておく。重要なポイントはもし不一致があったとしても、異なるバージョンのすべてが記憶されるという点だ。もし「ホンモノでないもの」が選択された場合でも、元に戻って正しいものを選択することができる。今後はマージングや不一致はなくなるとボクがいったのはそういう意味だ。ユーザーが決める場合を除き、マージングや不一致については iCloud がベストの判断をするのだ。

Gruber: Apple won’t reveal it but iCloud, on the server, will determine the truth when it detects a conflict that will never be published. It will act like a “black box”. Most cases it will go by the most recently implemented change — it will be undefined. The key is that if there is a conflict, they will remember the different conflicting versions. If it picks the “wrong truth” it will be able to go back and get the right one. That’s what I mean when I say no more merging or conflicts. iCloud will make its best guess at merging & conflicts other than having you pick it.

iBooks の持つ意味

Dan Benjamin：キミはこれが事実だと知っているのか、それとも単なるキミの見解なのか？

Gruber：これは事実だ。しかし iBooks がその具体例に違いないという点については、自分としては間違いないと考えているが、事実とまでは知らない。iPhone と iPad にある同じ iBook をオフラインで読む場合、iPhone で何ページか読み、さらに iPad で異なる部分を何ページか読んで、その後オンラインにして「read state」や「current page state」を iTunes サーバーに同期しようとしても、iBooks ではダイアログはなにも出てこない。

Gruber: I know this. What I don’t know but I beleeve, again, is that I think iBooks is an example of this in action. If you have the same iBook on the iPhone and iPad and take them both offline and flip a couple of pages on the iPhone then flip a different number of pages on the iPad, and them put them both online and they go to sync their “read state” or “current page state” to iTunes servers, iBooks never presents you a dialog. […]

自動バックアップの思わぬ効用

小ちゃな小鳥ちゃん［little birdie：アップル内部の情報筋］の話によると、iPhone 交換のためアップルストアを訪れる顧客の 50% は、最初にアクティベーションしたとき以来 iTunes につないでバックアップしたことがないのだという。だからアップルストアのジーニアスたちが iCloud に大興奮なのだとこの小鳥ちゃんはいう。

A little birdie says that about 50 percent of Apple Store customers who need to get their iPhones swapped have never plugged them into iTunes after the initial activation and sync. This is a big reason, according to this birdie, for why Apple Store Geniuses are excited about iCloud.

バックアップ恐怖症

バックアップ恐怖症のひとはいったん iOS デバイスをアクティベートした後は iTunes に触らずに済むことになる。それでも何らかの形で電源につないでリチャージする必要はあるわけで、それが WiFi ネットワークに接続可能なので、つなぐことで iCloud の自動バックアップのスイッチが入ることになる。もちろん App Store からひとつずつアプリを手動で再インストールすることも可能だが、iOS で購入したメディアやデータとなるとそれを復元する方法はまったくない。ユーザーが MobileMe に加入していない限り（あるいはグーグルのヒドい住所録シンクを利用していない限り）、住所録についても同じことがいえる。

Backupophobes can get away with never touching iTunes after activating an iOS device. But folks obviously need to plug them into some kind of power source to recharge which, combined with a reachable WiFi network, is what triggers iCloud’s automatic backup feature. Sure, these customers can manually reinstall apps one by one from the store, but they have no way to recover any of their data or media purchased on the device. That holds true for contacts, too, if users didn’t sign up for MobileMe or even Google’s free (and, in my experience, terrible) contact sync.

iOS のへその緒

バックアップしないひとが 50% もいるという低い数字でも私は驚かない。（もっと多くのユーザーが時たまではあっても iTunes に接続しているハズだが。）しかしこれが事実だとすれば、コンピュータユーザーのバックアップについていわれているいかなる数字よりずっと低いことに興味がある。私を含めて多くのユーザーが iOS のへその緒であるコードを切るようアップルに求めてきた。iCloud のような自動的解決方法が出来るまでアップルがそれ待ってくれたことに感謝したい気持ちだ。

I’m surprised to hear this number pegged so low at 50 percent (I assumed more users plugged into iTunes at least infrequently). If true though, I find it interesting that it is still much lower than just about any statistic you will hear about how many traditional computers users backup. People have been asking Apple to cut iOS’ umbilical cord for some time (and before the iPad), myself included. But I’m glad Apple waited until it had an automatic solution in place like iCloud.

iOS と OS X の違いはたいしたことなくなる

Mac は「格下げされた」というが、iOS デバイスが Mac と同格になったのだと私は考えたい。iOS がよちよち歩きしていた状態は終わったのだ。アップルが「Mac OS X」から Mac を落としたのは当然だ。私の予想では、OS X 次期バージョンのウワサがどっと増えるだろう。多分 iOS と OS X の違いはたいしたことなくなる。多分（エヘン！）マイクロソフトが Windows 8 でやったのと同じようになるだろう。［注］

Some will say that the Mac was “demoted”. I prefer to say that iOS devices have been brought on par with the Mac. The toddler stage for iOS is over. Unsurprisingly, Apple dropped the “Mac” from “Mac OS X.” Over-reading the tea leaves, I’m sure this will prompt speculation about the next version of OS X, in which I believe the distinction between iOS and OS X will become negligible. Perhaps to the point of (gasp) validating Microsoft’s Windows 8 approach.

ひとつにつなぎ合わせる

モバイル世界の勝負はまたもや変化したわけだ。アプリの数（４２万５千の iOS アプリ）、App Store やハードウェアはもはや関係ない。（ひとつひとつがいかにすばらしいサービスであっても）、それぞれをひとつにつなぎ合わせて初めて意味があるのだというまごう方なき事実をアップルはいっているのだ。パズルのピースは誰でも集めることが出来る。しかしそれを組み合わせて大きな絵にするには技術が要るのだ。

The mobile game has changed (again). It’s no longer about app counts (425K by latest count for iOS), app stores or hardware. Apple is making the compelling case that none of this matters without the knitting (a robust services layer) tying each piece together. Anyone can put puzzle pieces in a bag, but it takes a certain skill to assemble the total picture.

Apple TV は問題児

私にとって Apple TV は問題児（elephant in the room）だ。Photo Stream 以外さしたる変化はなかった。秋のイベントではもっといろいろあって欲しい。

Apple TV was, for me, the elephant in the room. Other than Photo Stream, no new features have been publicly announced for it. Hopefully, more to come here, especially going into a Fall event.

過去の遺産に決着をつける

Jason Snell［Macworld.com］が WWDC を総括しているのがオモシロい。

これまでのアップルの過去の遺産（弱点）を清算し、意欲的な新しい一歩を踏み出したのが WWDC のキーノートだった。まるでゴッドファーザーの一場面を思い出させるようだったというのだ。

初めて iOS 5 を見直す

iOS は最初の iPhone が出荷された 2007 年以来のものだ。その後アップルは気が狂ったように次々と新しい機能を追加してきた。iOS 5 にも新しいものは多々ある。しかし 2007 年時点では意味があったけれど今日では明らかに時代遅れとなってしまった機能を、アップルが見直そうとしているように思えるのは今回が初めてではないか。

The iOS has been with us since the day the first iPhone shipped in 2007, and in the intervening years Apple has been furiously adding new features. With iOS 5 there’s still a lot that’s new, but it feels like the first time that Apple has doubled back to fix features that made sense back in 2007 but are clearly antiquated today.

見直しリスト

現在の通知機能（push notification）は、別々のポップアップアラートが出たり、アンロックするとスタックがホームスクリーンから消えてしまうなどメチャクチャだ。しかし iOS 5 に Notification Center を取り入れたことで完全に見直された。Safari on the iPad はいまやタブ・ブラウジングをサポートする。Reminders アプリのおかげでとうとう To-Do リストもシステムサポートされた。カメラアプリも写真を撮るのにやっとハードウェアボタンが使えるようになった。修正され、見直されたものをリストアップすると非常に長いものになる。

The current system of push notifications (individual pop-up alerts and a stack on the home screen that’s dismissed when you unlock it) is a mess, but it’s been completely overhauled in iOS 5 with the introduction of Notification Center. Safari on the iPad now supports tabbed browsing. There’s finally a built-in to-do list, courtesy of the Reminders app. The Camera app finally lets you press a hardware button to take a picture. The list of fixes and re-thinks is remarkably long.

最大の見直し iCloud

最大の見直しについてはまだ触れていないかった。iCloud、すなわちアップルのオンラインサービスの最直近の見直しだ。MobileMe が必ずしも失敗作だったわけではない。しかしそれとほとんど同じものを無料で提供する他のウェブサービスには太刀打ちできなかった。アップルファミリーの厄介者を片付けるには死んでもらうしかなかったのだ。

And I haven’t mentioned the biggest re-think of all: the latest reboot of Apple’s online service, iCloud. MobileMe wasn’t a bad product, though it always had a hard time competing with other web services that offered most of its functionality for free. But for Apple to settle all family business, it had to die.

Android フォンや HP WebOS フォンのセットアップは信じられないほどカンタンだ。ユーザー名とパスワードを入力するだけ。メールや住所録、カレンダーも自動的に設定される。電話を新しく替えるときは、古いデータは自動的に復旧される。iPhone や iPad の場合はもっと込み入ったことになる。iPhone/iPad ユーザーがすべて MobileMe を使っているわけではないからだ。99 ドル払った者だけの特権なのだ。

When you set up an Android phone or one running HP’s WebOS, getting up and running is incredibly easy: enter in your user name and password. Your e-mail, contacts, and calendars are automatically configured, and if you’re replacing an old phone, all your old data is automatically restored. The iPhone and iPad experience was much more complicated, because Apple couldn’t count on MobileMe being there for every iPhone and iPad user—only the ones who paid $99 for the privilege.

iCloud ですべてが変わる

無料の iCloud ですべてが変わる。初めて使うとき iPhone を Mac につなぐようユーザーにいわなくても済む。セットアップはめちゃカンタンになる。アップル ID さえ入力すれば、住所録もブックマークも、メール、カレンダーやその他も自動的にアクセスできる。長い間 iOS の弱点とされてきたものがこれでなくなるのだ。

With iCloud being free, everything changes. Not only will this allow Apple to stop asking you to plug in your iPhone to a Mac before you use it, but it makes set-up vastly simpler. You can put in your Apple ID and automatically gain access to your address book, browser bookmarks, e-mail, calendars, and the rest. It boots one of iOS’s longstanding weaknesses right out the door.

iCloud を中心に据えた

さらに重要なことは、iCloud を OS X および iOS と徹底的に統合したことにより、いまやハードウェア・ソフトウェア総合体（hardware/software synthesis）の一部となり、アップルが更なる偉大な製品を作ることを可能にする点だ。コアビジネスに加えてオンラインサービスを行なうことの意味を、アップルが理解していたかどうか私には分からない。しかし iCloud はアップルの付加的部分にはならないだろう。iPhone、iPad、Mac のすべてのユーザーが体験できる、アップル体験の普遍的部分になるのだ。

More importantly, deeply integrating iCloud into OS X and iOS means that it’s now part of the hardware/software synthesis that is at the core of Apple’s ability to build great products. I’m not sure Apple has ever understood what it means to be an online-services company, selling various online features off on the side of Apple’s core business. But iCloud isn’t going to be some ancillary part of Apple: it’s going to be everywhere, part of the experience of every iPhone, iPad, and Mac user.

厳しい試練

これまでアップルのオンラインサービス（eWorld、iTools、.Mac、MobileMe）がパッとしなかったことを考えると、懸念はいくつもある。しかし iCloud は結局大成功に終わると思う。アップルを代表するフロントであり、中枢であり、脇役ではないからだ。いまや iCloud は OS や物理的ハードウェアと並ぶアップル製品の枢要な部分となった。それは隠しようのないことだ。iCloud の使い勝手（iCloud experience）は、アップルが造り出したすべての製品と同じように、これから厳しい試練を受けることになるのだ。

Given Apple’s shaky history with online services (eWorld, iTools, .Mac, MobileMe), this might be cause for some serious concern. But I think iCloud will end up being a big success, specifically because it’s now front and center, rather than off to the side. There’s nowhere for it to hide; iCloud will be just as much a part of Apple’s products as the operating systems and the physical hardware. The iCloud experience will be subject to the same brutal scrutiny as all the other aspects of Apple’s product-creation process.

自ら選んだ道

途中さまざまな障害もあるかもしれないが、アップルはそれを乗り越えるだろう。いや、乗り越えなければならない。

There might be some bumps along the way, but I believe Apple will get this right. In fact, Apple must get this right.

これはアップルが自ら選んだ道だ。古い遺産を清算し、新たなビジネス路線を打ち出すのだ。その過程は流血の惨事とはならないだろうが、ゴッドファーザーですら分かるような攻撃的手法をとるだろう。

This is the path Apple has chosen: It’s getting rid of its old liabilities and striking out in bold new business directions. Although Apple tends to settle old scores without shedding as much blood, it’s still an aggressive approach that even the Godfather would have understood.
