WWDC に相当するグーグルの開発者向け会議 Google I/O が終わった。

いろいろな反応の中で最も強烈なのは John Gruber ではないか・・・

グーグルについて書かれたものはどれも「グーグルをほかの他社と比べる」類いのバカげた話で、読む気にならない。これまで存在しなかった何か偉大なもの（great things）を我々は造り出すべきなのだ。ネガティブ思考では進歩はない。最も大切なものはゼロサムではない。まだいくらでも可能性はあるのだ。

Every story I read about Google is “us versus some other company” or some stupid thing, and I just don’t find that very interesting. We should be building great things that don’t exist. Being negative isn’t how we make progress. Most important things are not zero sum, there is a lot of opportunity out there.

よりベターなモノ

この偽善的な仲良し発言（kumbaya stuff）をグーグルファンは額面どおり受け取り、信じているようだ。しかしグーグルは iPhone の後に Android を作った会社だ。Facebook の後に Google Plus を作り、そしてこんどは Spotify の後に音楽サブスクリプションサービスを出すような会社だ。RSS リーダーの市場へ参入し、根こそぎにして、そして辞めていく。Gmail はどうかって？ Webmail と同じモノで、もっとベターというだけ。ウェブ検索だってそうだ。グーグル検索は何か新しいモノというワケではない。よりベターなモノというだけだ。たしかに格段に、はるかにベターではあるが、それでもベターというだけのことだ。

Google fans seem to eat this kumbaya stuff up, to really believe it. But Google is the company that built Android after the iPhone, Google Plus after Facebook, and now a subscription music service after Spotify. They entered the RSS reader market, wiped it out, and are now just walking away from it. Gmail? Webmail but better. Think about even web search: Google search wasn’t something new; it was something better. Way, way, way better, but still.

果てしなき野望

地図のことを考えてみよう。MapQuest その他が長年やってきた市場へ Google Maps が参入してきた。「これまで存在しなかった何か偉大なもの」などではない。すでに存在していたモノをよくしただけだ。グーグルは極端に競争心の強い会社だ。何度も既存の市場に参入して、ライバルをつぶした。それが悪いワケではない。資本主義ってそんなものだ。グーグルの成功は尊敬に値する。しかしグーグルを他と比較して考える（Google being pitted “versus”：グーグルが他のマネをしていると考える）のはバカげたことではない。グーグルはすべてを手に入れんとする。その野望には果てしがないのだ。

Consider maps. Google Maps entered a market where MapQuest and others had been around for years. That wasn’t something great that didn’t already exist. It was a better version of something that already existed. Google is a hyper-competitive company, and they repeatedly enter markets that already exist and crush competitors. Nothing wrong with that. That’s how capitalism is supposed to work, and Google’s successes are admirable. But there’s nothing stupid about seeing Google being pitted “versus” other companies. They want everything; their ambition is boundless.

歯に衣着せぬ Gruber 流にカチンとくるグーグル陣営も多いだろう。

案の定ただちに反論が出て、それに Gruber がまた反論している。

WWDC の後にはどんな言われ方をするだろうと気がもめる。

しかし Gruber が強烈だと思っていたら、もっとスゴいのがいた。Mat Honan の「グーグルアイランドへようこそ」（Welcome to Google Island）だ。（このスゴさを日本語で味わうには satomi 氏のご登場願わずばなるまい・・・）

この情報筋によれば、先週２人のトップは電話会談をしたという。両社の間では下級幹部レベルの討議も進行中だそうだ。

この情報筋は、特定の日取りは決めなかったものの、Page と Cook が翌週以降も話し合うはずだったと明かした。今週金曜日も会合が予定されていたが、理由は明らかでないが延期されと情報筋のひとりがロイターに明かした。

Page and Cook are expected to talk again in the coming weeks, though no firm date has been set, the sources said on Thursday. One of the sources told Reuters that a meeting had been scheduled for this Friday, but had been delayed for reasons that were unclear.

The two companies are keeping lines of communication open at a high level against the backdrop of Apple’s legal victory in a patent infringement case against Samsung, which uses Google’s Android software.

One possible scenario under consideration could be a truce involving disputes over basic features and functions in Google’s Android mobile software, one source said. But it was unclear whether Page and Cook were discussing a broad settlement of the various disputes between the two companies, most of which involve the burgeoning mobile computing area, or are focused on a more limited set of issues.

Android をスーパーチャージする

グーグルが Motorola Mobility の買収に大枚をはたいた。そのニュースでネットは持ち切りだ。

これは Android をスーパーチャージするためであり、ライバルに対する競争力を高めるためだと Larry Page 自ら大見得を切った。

Android はオープンのまま

モトローラを買収しても Android をオープンプラットフォームにするという我々の決意は変わらない。モトローラは Android のライセンシーであり、Android はオープンのままだ。モトローラは別会社として運営される。Android の成功には多くのハードウェアパートナー（メーカー）が貢献した。これらメーカーと一緒にすばらしいユーザー体験を提供するため邁進するつもりだ。

This acquisition will not change our commitment to run Android as an open platform. Motorola will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open. We will run Motorola as a separate business. Android をスーパーチャージする

マイクロソフトやアップルの「反競争的脅威」を繰り返しているところをみると、どうやら先日の David Drummond の投稿は Larry Page の考えでもあったようだ。

ここで「反競争的脅威」とは「競争的脅威」と読むべきではないかと John Gruber はいう。

マイクロソフトとはトップ同士の話し合いも行なわれたが、最後はグーグルが振り切ったようだ。

この Larry Page の投稿に対しては賛否こもごも多くの意見が噴出している。

マイクロソフトとアップルを邪魔する消耗戦だという極端な意見から、アップルが特許ポートフォリオを強化したと評価するものまで多岐にわたっている。

しかし激しい競争にしのぎを削る端末機ビジネスにグーグルが踏み込むことに疑問をもつものも多いようだ。なかでも Henry Blodget の意見がおもしろい。

１）サムスンや HTC のような端末機メーカーはグーグルをライバルと看做すのではないか
２）ハードやソフトを一体化するアップル方式の方が PC 方式より優れていることを認めたことにならないか
３）マイクロソフトはしてやられたと思うのではないか
４）単なる防御的意味だけなのか、それ以上の意味があるのか
５）激しい競争にしのぎを削る端末機ビジネスに参入することを投資家はどう考えるか

１万 9000 人の新社員

さらにはグーグルに新しく１万 9000 人の社員が加わることになる。１万 9000 人もだ！ グーグルの社員総数は現在２万 9000 人にすぎない。60% も社員数が増加することになる。カルチャーの違いはもっと重大だ。グーグルはそんなマネジメントが出来るのだろうか？

Additionally, Google just added 19,000 new employees. 19,000! Google itself only has 29,000. Google just increased the size of itself by 60%–in a company in which culture is crucial. Does Google really have the management in place to manage that?

奇跡の可能性

確かにグーグルが Motorola Mobility をアップルに対抗できるライバルに育て上げる奇跡の可能性もないわけではない。Android の販売人にとどまらず、iPhone みたいに利潤たっぷりのマージンを上げるという奇跡の・・・

Yes, there’s a chance that Google could pull off a miracle here and transform the Motorola Mobility business into a direct competitor of Apple’s–in which Google gets not only Android distribution, but super-fat iPhone-like profit margins to boot.

大失敗の可能性も

しかし、ありそうな筋書きは、モトローラがこれまでのような二流の落伍者にとどまり、検索ビジネスでの輝かしい独占的地位に粗末な消耗品ハードを加えただけという結末になることだ。これじゃ投資家の気には入るまい。

Far more likely, Google will just continue Motorola’s mediocre also-ran status in the handset business, thus adding a big, crappy commodity hardware business to its glorious monopoly software business in search. And that won’t make investors happy.

結論。グーグルとしては大胆な動きだ。しかし解答より疑問の方が大きい動きだ。最終的には大失敗に終わる可能性すらある。

Bottom line, a bold move by Google. But one that raises a lot more questions and challenges than answers. And one that could end up being a major disaster.

新しいモバイル OS を選ばなくてもいいか

グーグルのパートナーたちがバカでない限り、つぎに選ぶべきモバイル OS を何にするか終日頭をひねったに違いない。

Unless Google’s partners are completely stupid, they spent most of the day figuring out which mobile operating system they will use next.

HP の webOS はどうか

サムスン、LG、HTC にとっては然るべき選択肢がないということが問題だ。しかしひとつあるかもしれない・・・それは HP の webOS だ。

The problem that Samsung, LG and HTC have is that there isn’t a good option available. But maybe there is — HP’s webOS.

HP は Palm を買収した際に webOS を獲得した。誰に聞いてもそれは優れた OS だ。事実 HP はコンピュータや、プリンター、ハンドヘルドで webOS を使うつもりであることを隠さない。

HP acquired webOS when it bought Palm, and by all accounts, it’s a very good operating system. In fact, HP has made no secret that it plans to use webOS in computers, printers and handheld devices.

HP にとってチャンスではないか

HP の TouchPad が飛ぶように売れているわけではなさそうだ。ということはライセンスに興味を持つメーカーに HP がそのモバイル OS の売り込みをしないわけでもなさそうだ。

It doesn’t appear that HP’s TouchPad is flying off the shelves, so there seems to be no reason the company wouldn’t shop its mobile OS around to interested manufacturers for a licensing deal.

事実 HP がこの OS をライセンスできれば、マーケットでの地位を強化するのに役立つ。それだけではない。グーグルの地位を弱めるのにも役立つ。そんな動きをリードするのはアップルかもしれないが、HP としては初めてマーケットシェアを増やすチャンスが巡ってきたのかもしれない。

The fact is, if HP were to license the OS, it would strengthen its position in the market, but it would also weaken Google’s position. Apple would probably come out of such a scenario on top, but this could be the first step for HP to build a significant amount of market share.

どうやら新生グーグルでは Larry Page の意向が大きく働き始めたようだ。

ほんとはジョブズを初代 CEO にしたかった・・・

グーグルの共同創業者 Larry Page と Sergey Brin が CEO に雇いたいと考えていたのはアップルの Steve Jobs だった。

バカじゃないの

グーグル創業に関するブルームバーグテレビのドキュメンタリー「ゲームチェンジャー」を見て分かったことだ。それはこういう話なのだ。１２〜１３人の CEO 候補を面接したが気に入らなかった。そんなときたまたま Page と Brin がアップルに Jobs を訪問したのだ。

We learned this detail watching Bloomberg TV’s “Game Changers” documentary on the founding of Google.

The story goes that, after interviewing 12 or 13 candidates they didn’t like, Page and Brin happened to make something of a social visit to Apple and Jobs.

訪問から戻ったグーグルの共同創業者は投資家の John Doerr に会い、なぜ彼を雇ってはいけないか聞いたのだ。

After the visit, the Google cofounders met with investor John Doerr and asked him: why can’t we hire that guy?

実際の文言がどうだったか「ゲームチェンジャー」でははっきりしないが、どうやら「バカじゃないの？」的なことをいわれたらしい。

Game Changers doesn’t have the exact quote, but we figure he told Page and Brin something along the lines of, “are you nuts?”

その後、グーグルは Eric Schmidt に決めたのだという。

Later, Google settled on Eric Schmidt.

「ゲームチェンジャー」はオモシロい

「ゲームチェンジャー」にはその他つぎのような話についても触れている。

・アマゾンの創業者 Jeff Bezos はグーグルに対する大手投資家として２５万ドルを投資した。

・Schmidt が Burning Man［砂漠のヒッピー祭り］に参加したので Page と Brin は彼を好きになることにした。

・グーグルの IPO 前にプレイボーイのインタビューに応じたことが SEC との悶着を引き起こした。

Other stuff we learned:

• Amazon founder Jeff Bezos invested $250,000 in Google’s angel round.

• Page and Brin decided they liked Schmidt because he attended Burning Man – a hippie art festival out in the desert.

• An interview with Playboy during the “quiet period” leading up to Google’s IPO got the company in trouble with the SEC.

先日の Steve Jobs に引き続き、グーグル版の「ゲームチェンジャー」もなかなかオモシロい。

２人のためにスタンフォード大のネットワークがあわやダウンしかけたとか、Page と Brin の生い立ちから、最近の中国撤退、Android、プライバシー問題まで万遍なくカバーしていて、興味のあるひとにはおススメだ。

エンジニア肌の Page や Brin と、CEO の Schmidt とではいささか肌合いが異なるのも分かるような気がする。

そういえば、Burning Man に参加した Schmidt を Gawker がすっぱ抜いていたっけ・・・

Jobs の下なら、最近頻発する Eric Schmidt の問題発言やグーグルの人材流出などは起きていなかったかも・・・
