アップルが買収した PA Semi については何が目的なのか憶測が絶えない。

Steve Jobs が PA Semi の技術に目をつけたことや、Snow Leopard の核心をなす Grand Central という並列プログラミングの話題が云々されたことも記憶に新しい。

ひょんなことから、また PA Semi の話が浮上している。

次世代 iPhone のプロセッサ

アップル「チップ」チームの上級マネージャ Wei-han Lien は　LinkedIn［ビジネス利用に特化した SNS］にちょっとした情報を漏らしている。次世代 iPhone のための ARM プロセッサ設計で忙しいといっているのだ。

Wei-han Lien, the senior manager of Apple’s chip team, dished out the morsel on LinkedIn, saying he’s busy at work crafting an ARM processor for the next-generation iPhone.

問題はどんなプロセッサかということだ。

以前からあったアップルとの関係

PA Semi のエンジニアは、強力なパフォーマンスの、電力消費量の小さいプロセッサを設計するのを専門にしている。アップルはインテルチップに移行する前、PA Semi のプロセッサを使うことも検討していた。I.B.M. や Motorola のチップとアーキテクチャが似ているため、ラップトップやデスクトップに使うことを考えたのだ。だから、PA Semi の役員はアップルがインテルを使うとプレス発表したことに大きなショックを受けた。アップルがインテルを選択したことで、PA Semi の事業は一夜にしてダメージを受けた。このため PA Semi としてはネットワークやストレージなどの新しいマーケットを開拓せざるを得なかった。

The engineers at PA Semi specialized in crafting processors with strong performance and very low power consumption. Before shifting to Intel chips, Apple flirted with the idea of placing the PA Semi processors, which were similar in architecture to the I.B.M. and Motorola chips, into its laptops and desktops. PA Semi officials were, in fact, shocked when they learned in the press of Apple’s decision to go with Intel. Apple’s choice crippled PA Semi’s business overnight and forced it to go after new markets such as networking and storage gear.

軍事技術への傾斜

新しい顧客として PA Semi はなんとか軍需製品のサプライヤーの注目を引くことができた。彼らは PA Semi チップの消費電力が低いことに注目したのだ。（一個当たりの電力消費は 20 ワット未満。）

While hunting for new customers, PA Semi also managed to attract the attention of military equipment suppliers who were intrigued by the low-power qualities of PA Semi’s chips. (They consume less than 20 watts apiece.)

国防省に詳しい筋によると、PA Semi のチップはミサイルや戦闘機のコンピュータ、偵察機器などに使われることになるという。

People familiar with the Defense Department’s intentions say that PA Semi chips are set to go into missiles, computers in fighter jets and surveillance equipment.

事前に知っていたら・・・

PA Semi のプロセッサが実際に軍事システムで使用されるかどうかは不明だ。私がインタビューしたひとの中には、PA Semi 取得に要したコストを十分に回収できるチップ販売収入を今後５年間であげることができるだろうというひともいる。しかし一方では、プロセッサに関する軍との密接な利害関係が、取得の発表後に浮上したことは、アップルにとって大変ショックだったというひともいる。というのも、資金の逼迫している PA Semi の資金源として、軍需関係が重要な役割を果たしていることを事前には知らなかったからだ。

It’s unclear how many of the PA Semi processors will make their way into military systems. Some people I interviewed suggested that Apple could well sell enough of the chips over the next five years to cover the cost of the PA Semi acquisition. Others, however, said that the intense military interest in the processor that arose following the announcement of the acquisition came as a shock, since they were previously unaware of any military deals significant enough to keep PA Semi, which was running out of money, afloat.

「それほどの関係があることをアップルが買収しようとした時点で知っていたら、アップルはそのオファーを受けなかっただろう」と Gwennap 氏［Linley Group グループのチップアナリスト Linley Gwennap］はいう。

“If there was that much business sitting there when Apple tried to buy them, they would have turned down the offer,” said Mr. Gwenapp [sic].

ニューヨークタイムズの John Markoff によるもので、アップルがチップ設計に乗り出すという Jobs のことばを引き出している。

マルチコア・プロセッサの問題

この方向［マルチコア化］に進むと、新しい並列チップ（parallel chips）をどうやって効率的にプログラムするかという問題が生ずる。コアの数が５つを超えると、業界ですら答がないと認めるほどだ。

The problem is that, having headed down that path, the industry is now admitting that it doesn’t know how to program the new parallel chips efficiently when the number of cores goes above a handful.

新機能は一時停止

月曜日の WWDC プレゼンテーションの後で行われたインタビューで Jobs 氏は次のように語った。「この５年間、我々は Mac OS X に数千を超える機能を加えてきた。だが、新機能を増やすことについては一時停止ボタンを押すことにした。」

“We’ve added over a thousand features to Mac OS X in the last five years,” he said Monday in an interview after his presentation. “We’re going to hit the pause button on new features.”

その代わり、アップルとしては彼いうところの「基本的機能」（foundational features）に焦点を絞ることにした。それこそまさに将来の OS にとって基礎となるべきものだ。

Instead, the company is going to focus on what he called “foundational features” that will be the basis for a future version of the operating system.

並列プログラミング

「プロセッサ業界は次から次へとコアを増やしている。しかしコイツをどうやってプログラムしたらいいのか誰も知らないのだ。２つのコアなら可能だ。４つならまあまあ、８つとなるともうお手上げ。」

“The way the processor industry is going is to add more and more cores, but nobody knows how to program those things,” he said. “I mean, two, yeah; four, not really; eight, forget it.”

Jobs 氏いわく、アップルは並列プログラミング（parallel-programming）の突破口を見つけたのだ。

Apple, he asserted, has made a parallel-programming breakthrough.

PA Semi の買収

ソフトウェアこそが問題なのだと彼はいう。アップルは４月に PA Semi というチップ会社を買収した。同社には Grand Central というコード名で知られる並列プログラミングの技術があり、Snow Leopard の核心はまさにその技術にあるのだ。

It is all about the software, he said. Apple purchased a chip company, PA Semi, in April, but the heart of Snow Leopard will be about a parallel-programming technology that the company has code-named Grand Central.

「PA Semi は iPhone や iPod 用の《システム・オン・チップ》（system-on-chips）の設計を行うのだ。」

“PA Semi is going to do system-on-chips for iPhones and iPods,” he said.

Grand Central

Grand Central こそ Snow Leopard の中核をなすものだと彼はいう。この方向に技術を転換することによって、いくつもの興味深い疑問が生じる。アップルとインテルのパートナー関係がどうなるかというのもそのひとつだ。

Grand Central will be at the heart of Snow Leopard, he said, and the shift in technology direction raises lots of fascinating questions, including what will happen to Apple’s partnership with Intel.

このインタビューには、グラフィックスプロセッサに関係する OpenCL の話も出てきて、なかなか興味深い。

Steve Jobs の眼差しは、iPhone プラットフォームの確立だけでなく、遥かその彼方にアップル独自のチップ開発にも向けられているようだ。
