完璧でないならない方がいい

Steve がウッドサイドで隣りに住んでいたときのことを覚えている。彼の家には家具がなかった。Steve を満足させる家具は世界中探してもないんだなと思い知ったものだ。彼にとっては完璧なものが得られないのならむしろない方がいいのだ。

I remember when Steve was my neighbor in Woodside, Calif., and he had no furniture. It struck me that there wasn’t furniture good enough for Steve in the world. He’d rather have nothing if he couldn’t have perfection.

本格的なアンドロイドフォーン Droid の登場によって、初めて iPhone と対等に比較できるスマートフォンが出現したように思える

iPhone との比較も花盛りで、Greg Kumparak（MobileCrunch）の渾身のレポートは読み応えがある。

この Droid がピンチ（pinching）に対応していないことについて興味深い議論が行なわれている。「ジェスチャーは技術ではなく言語だ」というのだ。

Droid にピンチがないのは何故か

「アップルが iPhone で用いているマルチタッチジェスチャーの特徴的なものは『ピンチ』（pinching）だ。とくに『ピンチでズーム』（pinch-to-zoom：拡大・縮小のピンチ）がそうだ。MobileSafari で拡大・縮小するのにピンチでズームを使う。写真を拡大・縮小するのにもピンチでズームを使う。地図を拡大・縮小するのにもピンチでズームを使う。」

ジェスチャーは特許ではない

個人的には技術革新に大賛成だ。そもそも特許を通じて獲得した技術革新によって発明家が利益を享受できるからこそ企業は技術革新を行なうのだ。しかし同時にまた、ジェスチャーは創造可能なものではなく、特許で押さえるべきものでものない。ピンチでズームは誰でも常識的にやることだ。それ以外のやり方が考えられるだろうか。アップルは何らかの形で特許を得たいと考える。マルチタッチをデバイスに認識させ、それに反応させる技術の特許が得たいのだ。しかしジェスチャーそのものを特許にすることがあってはならない。

Personally, I’m all about innovation. Allowing an innovator to benefit from his or her innovation through patents is what makes businesses innovate in the first place. At the same time however, gestures are not innovative, nor should they be patentable. Pinch-to-zoom is just common sense. How else would you do it with one motion? If Apple wants to patent something, patent the technology that allows the device to recognize multi touch and react to it, don’t patent the gestures themselves.

ジェスチャーは言語だ

ジェスチャーは言語と同じ扱いを受けるべきだ。タッチを用いるデバイスの手話言語みたいな扱いだ。必要とされているのはタッチ可能なデバイスで使われる共通なジェスチャーのセットなのだ。デバイスが異なれば使う言語も異なるということであってはならない。

Gestures should be treated as a language, like sign language for touch devices. We need a common set of gestures to interact with all touch enabled devices. I shouldn’t have to lean a different language just to use a different device.

ハイパーリンクの愚を繰り返すな

この状況は何年も前のハイパーリンクをめぐる騒ぎを思い起こさせる。ハイパーリンクのライセンスを得るべく BT は Prodigy はじめ１６の ISP（AOL を含む）とコンタクトをとらなくてはならないハメになったのだ。もしもアップルが同じやり方を踏襲して「ピンチでズーム」が「自分たちのものだ」と強制したりすることになれば、自分としてはジェスチャーに関する特許が（他社のものも含めて）すべて失われることを願うのみだ。

This situation reminds me of the hyperlink fiasco from many years ago when BT contacted Prodigy and 16 other ISPs, including AOL asking them to buy a hyperlink licence. If Apple goes down this path and tries to enforce pinch-to-zoom as “theirs” I would only hope it, as well as any other gesture parents, would lose.

傾聴に値する議論だと思う。

アップルのマウスによってコンピュータの世界は一新した。しかしポインティングデバイスとしてのマウスはアップルの発明ではなかった。

iPhone の登場によってマルチタッチなしの世界は考えられなくなった。マルチタッチについてはかつて iPhone が登場した 2007 年のキーノートで Steve Jobs 自身が「ちゃんと特許で押さえてあるよ」（… and BOY have we patented it!）と誇らしげに語ったものだ。

米国時間１０月２０日のマックのモデルチェンジはスペシャルイベントがあってもおかしくない内容だった。

John Gruber の予想も Multi-Touch Trackpad Gadget を除いてすべて当たった。

印象的だったことが二つある。iMac のデザインと新しいマルチタッチマウスだ。

Jonathan (Jony) Ive 自身が語っているビデオがすばらしい。

Gizmodo につづいて Engadget も取り上げたこのビデオは必見だ。

モニターと一体化したデザインがオリジナルの iMac から変わらないこと、さらにそれを一歩押し進めて iMac そのものの存在を気にせずコンテンツに直接向き合える・・・そんなことを念頭においてデザインしたと Jonathan Ive が熱く語る。

“It’s just display… and no display.” ということばが印象的だ。

iMac が Cinema Display と一体化してしまった感がある。16対9 のワイドスクリーンは HDTV としても使え、この新しいデザインは究極のデザインとなった。

未来を塗り替えるマルチタッチマウス

個人的にはワンボタンマウスが大好きだった。ワンボタンはシングルタッチの必然的帰結だからだ。

しかし、iPhone の登場によってマルチタッチとジェスチャーの意味が大きく変わった。それがコンピュータの入力装置にどう反映されるのかたいへん興味があった。

ちょっとイカの寿司を思わせる新しい形の Magic Mouse は、マッキントッシュと共に登場したマウスを次の地平へと高める突破口となるだろう。

デスクトップ用の「Multi-Touch Trackpad Gadget」なるものへの興味もますます湧いてくる。

そして来年登場するアップルタブレットへの期待もますます膨らむ・・・

最近ではウェブサービスに事故が起きるたびに、クラウドコンピューティングに信頼性がない（欠ける）ためだとするのが技術メディアの傾向となっている。これに対してクラウド技術者やブロガーからは、これらの出来事は「クラウドの失敗」などではなく、クラウドコンピューティングの安全性とはまったく無関係だとする反論を招いている。

There’s a been a trend recently in which every outage of a web-enabled service is interpreted by the tech media as a reflection of the reliability (or lack thereof) of cloud computing. This in turn has prompted defensive reactions from some cloud technologists and bloggers, who counter that these incidents aren’t “cloud failures” at all and have nothing to do with whether cloud computing is safe.

今週あったスマートフォン Sidekick のデータ消失の大惨事は、クラウドコンピューティングの安全性に関する議論を再燃させている。InformationWeek はすべてのユーザーデータが失われたことについて「コードレッド級のクラウド大惨事」と評した。ZDNet は「これまであったクラウドコンピューティングの最大の事故のひとつ」と呼んだ。CNET はこの事故がマイクロソフトのクラウドコンピューティングに対する野望に「暗雲を投げかけるものだ」と書いた。Barron の Tech Trader Daily は「これでクラウドコンピューティングに対する大きな期待が大幅に後退する懸念がある」と述べた。

This week’s data catastrophe with the Sidekick mobile device has prompted fresh debate about cloud culpability. InformationWeek dubbed the apparent loss of all user data a “code red cloud disaster.” ZDNet called it “one of the biggest cloud computing disasters so far.” Cnet wrote that the incident “threatens to put a dark cloud” over Microsoft’s cloud ambitions. Barron’s Tech Trader Dailyﾊwrites that “you have to wonder if the high hopes about cloud computing just suffered a mammoth setback.”

しかし一方では、Sidekick 騒動は「クラウドの失敗」などではないと主張するアナリストもいる。Redmonk の James Governor は、Twitter でつぎのようにつぶやいた。「サービスの停止がすべていまいましいクラウドの失敗であるわけがない。T-mobile の失敗は典型的なデータセンターにおけるものであって、Force や AWS などといったクラウドインフラで生じたものではない。データのバックアップをしなかったが故にデータを失ったのなら、それはクラウドの失敗ではない。」

But some analysts argue that the Sidekick snafu isn’t a “cloud failure” at all. “Every outage is not a frigging cloud outage,” Redmonk’s James Governor writes on Twitter. “The T-mobile failure is at a traditional data center – its not running on Force, AWS, or other cloud infrastructure is it? If someone doesn’t back up their data and loses it I don’t call that a cloud failure.”

Martin Glassborow at StorageBod agrees, saying the Sidekick incident “should not be seen as a failure of the Cloud; it’s not! It’s the failure of a centralised service which was apparently run by incompetents! It is yet another lesson that if you only have a single copy of your data; you might as well only have no copies of your data. So if you are archiving and deleting, you better make sure that you have two copies of the archive or at least the ability to recreate that data.”

But one leading cloud blogger thinks the cloud is fair game on this one.

“Many of the cloud pundits out there will try to tell you that the Sidekick service isn’t a cloud application,” writes Reuven Cohen at Elastic Vapor. “Let’s call it what it is, it’s a cloud app – your data when using a Sidekick is hosted in some else’s data center. In the most basic terms, if I choose a device such as a mobile phone that requires me to use some else’s data centers for storing my personal data, I expect it to be at the very least backed up automatically, and preferably I should have the ability to do so myself. It appears that neither was an option for T-Mobile Sidekick customers.”

Sam Johnston disagrees. “While I know that this analogy is inconvenient for some vendors it works and it’s the best we have: Cloud is resilient in the same way that the electricity grid is resilient. Power stations do fail and we (generally) don’t hear about it,” he writes. “Similarly datacenters fail, get disconnected, overheat, flood, burn to the ground and so on, but these events should not cause any more than a minor interruption for end users. Otherwise how are they different from ‘legacy’ web applications?”

ジグソーパズルのピースがある程度詰まってくると大きな絵が見えてくる・・・そんな感じがする最近のアップルのウワサだ。

まずひとつは、アップルの特許申請。両手の１０本指を使ったマルチタッチへの対応だ。

Covering the history of Apple and mice in great detail, the publication speculates that the re-engineered mouse represents the interplay of hardware and software. It should feature a touch sensitive surface and a bunch of multi-touch actions programmable in a Preferences app, including the iPhone-esque flick scroll gesture with a familiar rubber band effect when you reach the top of a list.

Some Apple watchers have already concluded that the new multi-touch Mighty Mouse allows cursor motion through finger dragging rather than moving the entire device on a surface. 不満の多いマイティーマウス

Many users hate its scrolling ball that looses precision after just a few months of use. Most Mac users I know buy a Logitech mouse when they get a new Mac system, refusing to bother with Mighty Mouse. It’s ironic since Apple put the mouse on the computing map 30 years ago, when Steve Jobs first spotted the technology in Xerox’s labs.

少しずつ進化させる

マイクロソフトの Windows 7 にもその中核にはマルチタッチがあるが、アップルは少しずつ進化させてきた点が異なる。まず iPhone や iPod touch で導入、MacBook のマルチタッチトラックパッドでさらに一歩を進め、ウワサされているこのマルチタッチマイティーマウスに至ったというわけだ。

John Gruber が口を開いたのでいよいよマックが一新される気配濃厚だ。

Engadget の記事が始まりだった。

「FCC への申請に Bluetooth のキーボードとマウスが含まれることを Engadget が見つけた」というものだ。

My updated if-I-were-a-betting-man wagers for upcoming Apple hardware announcements: all-new iMacs, all-new low-end (plastic) MacBook, new keyboard and mouse, speed-bump/price-cut Mac Mini update. Scratch that previous bet on Blu-ray in the iMacs, though — it was in, but now it’s out. Hope you like the iTunes Store if you like HD movies.
