マイケル・アーリントンが TechCrunch 上で熱心に推進してきたタブレット「CrunchPad」が、発表直前になって空中分解したのはご存知のとおり。

一方 Michael Arrington を閉め出した Chandrasekar Rathakrishnan は、１２月７日に製品名を CrunchPad から Joo Joo に変えて独自の発表を行なった。その発表直後に偽ジョブズ（FSJ：Fake Steve Jobs）が論点を辛辣にまとめている。

　ウーン、冗談だろ！Chandra がいうには JooJoo とは「マジックという意味だ」そうだ。そうなのか。そうなら「手品」でも「ごまかし」でもいいわけだ。製品名にそんな名前は使わないもんだろ。それに誰かがいってたぞ。JooJoo は doo-doo や poo-poo と同じ響きだって。オマエの製品をみんながそんな名前で呼ぶんだぞ。それってクソって意味だから、オマエの製品もそうなんじゃない。それより Doomed［不運の、最初から成功の見込みがない］って名前はどうだい？受けそうじゃないか。

そんなウワサが急浮上している。

ショックを受けた

アップルタブレットのウワサが出て久しいが、びっくりするほど値段が安いかもしれないというウワサが Diggnation のショーで浮上した。ショーが半分ぐらい進んだところで Kevin Rose（Digg の開設者）が、タブレットのウワサを「何か聞いていないの？」と相方にけしかけた。すると相棒の Alex Albrecht が、自分やみんなが考えているよりタブレットはずっと安いかもしれないとしぶしぶ認めたというわけ。

Apple’s long rumored tablet could have a surprisingly low price, based on an unusual rumor from the latest episode of Revision3 show Diggnation (viewable below). Following prompting from Digg founder Kevin Rose, who insisted his co-host “heard about something” related to the device, fellow presenter Alex Albrecht reluctantly claimed shortly before the halfway point of the show to know that the tablet would be less expensive than he and likely others would expect.

「値段がどんなに安くなりそうか聞いてショックを受けたよ」と Albrecht は答える。ただ冗談半分で本気かどうかは分らない。

“I was shocked at how cheap the price point was going to be,” he said, only half-teasing that he may or may not be serious.

Albrecht がリークするのはいつもとはやり方と違う。アップル製品のウワサを口にするのはいつもなら Rose だ。ひどい間違いもあるが、ここ数年は、事前に正確な情報を得ていたことを何度も証明した。2008 年の iPod nano の写真、iTunes 8、iPhone 3.0 のコピー＆ペーストなどだ。Albrecht 自身がウワサを入手したのか、それとも Rose の聞いている話を取り上げただけなのか分らない。Albrecht が住んでいるのはロスアンゼルスだが、Rose はサンフランシスコで、アップル本社により近い。

The leak would be unusual for Albrecht. Normally, Rose is the one most likely to float rumors about Apple products. Although he has occasionally been very inaccurate, in the past year he has in some cases had information in advance that has proven true, such as photos of the 2008 iPod nano, iTunes 8 and copy-and-paste in iPhone 3.0. It’s unclear if Albrecht came across information, if any, on his own or else had picked up any rumors second-hand from Rose. Albrecht normally lives in Los Angeles where Rose lives closer to Apple, in San Francisco.

［Wired iTablet Concept App］

アップルタブレットもまだ出ないのにそれに対応したアプリを Condé Nast（Wired の親会社）が出すというので話題になったのがつい数日前のことだ。

そのコンセプトビデオと称するものを他ならぬ Wired の Brian X. Chen が紹介している。

これが iTablet アプリだ

最初にこのニュースを伝えたのは Peter Kafka だった。彼は Condé が関係者に見せているタブレットアプリのデモビデオを一般にも公開するよう説得しているということだった。ということで、上のビデオは目下ニューヨークで行なわれている Wired ストアのプロモーションで撮影されたもの。写っているのは Wired の「iTablet」アプリだ。

All Things Digital’s Peter Kafka first reported that news, and he said he was trying to convince Condé to share a video demonstrating the tablet app. Well, here you go. The video above was shot at the Wired Store promotional event currently being held in New York. On display there is a concept video of Wired’s “iTablet” app.

その可能性を考えると・・・

ボクにとって一番興味深いのは３０秒過ぎのあたりで、インタラクティブグラフィックであることが分るところだ。この架空のフォーマットの可能性を考えるとなんともワクワクしてくるではないか・・・

To me, the most interesting part appears around the 30-second mark, where we can see an animated, interactive graphic. Exciting to think about the potential for this hypothetical new format, isn’t it?

ビデオに映っているものはＥブックらしい。アップルタブレットだといわれればそのようにも見える・・・

iPhone 発表のときも一部のベンダーに開発させた iPhone ソフトが併せて発表されたものだ。

iPhone がウワサどおり来年第１四半期に登場するのであれば、アップルタブレットについても同じような動きがあっておかしくはない。

Condé Nast といい、NY タイムズの失言といい、いよいよアップルタブレットの登場も間近ということか・・・

アップルタブレットが来年後半にずれ込むという台湾発のウワサが駆け巡っている。

発信元が的中率の低い DigiTimes なので、どこも半信半疑の扱いだ。

このウワサにとりあえずの感想を述べているひとが２人いる。ひとりは Ian Paul（PC World）、もうひとりは John Gruber だ。

Ian Paul は「アップルタブレットは死んだ」と次のように否定的だ。

（アップルタブレットをめぐる）ウワサがあまりにバカげたものになってきたので、ここらで真実と向き合うべきだ。アップルタブレットは死んだ。そもそもそんなものは存在しなかったのだ。

These rumors are getting so ridiculous that I think it’s time we accepted the truth: the Apple tablet is dead; in fact it probably never existed.

ハッキリさせようじゃないか。アップルタブレットは熱狂的アップルファンが造り出した蜃気楼なのだ。蜃気楼に近づいても、そこには何も存在しないことに気付くだけだ。同じように、その日が離れていればいるほど、決して来ることのない日までタブレットは美しく、明るく輝くのだ。それはすばらしい夢だ。しかし決して実現することはないのだ。

Let’s face it: the Apple tablet is a mirage created by legions of fanboys and tech dreamers. The closer you get to that mirage, the more you realize it’s not going to be there when you arrive. But then, off in the distance, an even brighter and more beautiful tablet is envisioned for a day that will never come. It’s a nice dream, but it’s just not going to happen.

DigiTimes の奇妙なウワサ

今日のビッグニュースは、DigiTimes のアップルタブレットが３月の予定から「2010 年の後半」までずれ込むという ニュースだろう。ディスプレイ部品の重要な変更があるからだというのだ。考えて欲しいが、アップルは一度として、ひと言も、新しいタブレットについて公式に発表したことはない。ましてや３月に出す予定だといったこともない。結局このニュースは、アップルがウワサのデッドラインを守れなかったという類いの話なのだ。

So the big news so far today is this report in DigiTimes stating that Apple has delayed its tablet from March until “the second half of 2010” because of significant changes to the display components. Keep in mind that Apple has never publicly said a damn thing, not a word, about any new tablet computer, let alone ever stated that it was due in March. This is one of those stories where what they really mean is that Apple has missed a rumored deadline.

しかし DigiTimes の記事をよくみると、とても奇妙に思えることがある。

But the details of DigiTimes’s report strike me as very odd:

なぜ２つのモデルが必要なのか

これは理解に苦しむところだ。なぜアップルは、まったく異なる種類のディスプレイで、しかもサイズが１インチだけ異なる、そんなモデルを２つも作らなければならないのか。iPhone が登場して３年目になるが、その間 iPhone のディスプレイは種類も形もたったひとつだけだった。２種類のディスプレイをアップルが発注することはあるかもしれないが、２種類のタブレットを出すことは決してないと言い切っていい。

This makes no sense to me. Why would Apple have two tablet models with entirely different displays that are only one inch different in size? We’re into the third year of the iPhone and there’s still just one single display type and form factor. Apple may well have placed orders for both these types of displays, but I say no way are both for tablet computers.

［Apple – Annual Trends］

日本の有価証券報告書にあたる「Form 10-K」は毎年 SEC に提出される。Form 10-K は企業動向のチェックに欠かせない基本的資料だ。一般株主向けに作成されるアニュアル・レポートはこれを簡略化したもの。

あまり注目されなかったが、アップルの Form 10-K に触れた興味深い記事がある。

７０％増の設備投資

最近アップルが SEC に提出した Form 10-K には興味深いデータが載っている。2010 会計年度に１９億ドルの設備投資［Capex：capital expenditures］が計上されているのだ。これは前年の１１億ドルに比べ７０％増となる。いったいアップルは何を計画しているのだろうか。

Here’s an interesting data point from Apple’s recent 10-K filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission: The company has budgeted $1.9 billion in capital expenditures for fiscal 2010. That’s 70 percent more than the $1.1 billion it spent in 2009. What does Apple (AAPL) plan to do with those additional funds?

アップルは 10-K の中で「2010 年度において約１９億ドルの公共投資を予定しており、その内訳は小売店鋪が４億ドル、会社設備、インフラ、工作機械および製造設備が１５億ドルである」と述べている。

According to its 10-K, the company “anticipates utilizing approximately $1.9 billion for capital asset purchases during 2010, including approximately $400 million for Retail facilities and approximately $1.5 billion for corporate facilities, infrastructure, and product tooling and manufacturing process equipment.”

「工作機械および製造設備」の意味は？

これは前年に比べ大幅増の広範囲な投資となると Caris & Company のアナリスト Robert Cihra はいう。「興味深いことに、今年の Form 10-K には『工作機械および製造設備』という文言が含まれているが、これはアップルがこれまでのやり方を変えて特定の製品ないしは部品をインハウスで製造する可能性があることを示している」と Cihra は本日付けの顧客へのレポートで述べている。「さらには、アップルが（ノースカロライナ州の）新しいデータセンターに巨額の投資を行なうことを示している。同センターは iTunes/iPhone アプリのサポートから新しいクラウドコンピューティングに至るまであらゆることに対応できるものだ。」

That’s a wide range of potential applications–wider, in fact, than it has been in years past, as Caris & Company analyst Robert Cihra notes. “Interestingly…this year’s 10K added wording for purchases of ‘product tooling and manufacturing process equipment’ which could imply Apple reversing course to actually build certain products/components in-house,” Cihra said in a note to clients today. “Beyond that are signals of Apple investing in massive new data center capacity (e.g., North Carolina) that could support anything from iTunes/iPhone Apps through new ‘cloud computing.’”

さまざまの可能性

この話は信憑性が高いように思える。アップルのような会社なら、１９億ドルの設備投資資金の使い道はいろいろ考えられる。確かに iTunes TV のサブスクリプション・サービスにはかなりの投資が必要だろう。タブレットの製造だってそうだ。そういうことに投資されるのかどうか、そもそも何かに使われる可能性があるのかどうかは今後を見守る必要がある。ひょっとして Steve Jobs の夢である「究極のコンピュータ工場」にアップルは全額投資するかもしれないのだ。

Sounds plausible. After all, there’s a lot a company like Apple could do with an additional $1.9 billion in capital expenditures. Certainly, an iTunes TV subscription service would require some investment. A tablet/slate device might as well. Whether that’s where this money is headed–if it’s headed anywhere at all–remains to be seen. Who knows, perhaps Apple intends to blow it all on CEO Steve Jobs’ dream of the “ultimate computer factory.”

結局７０％増の設備投資という以外は確たるものがあるわけではない。

しかし、来年登場するというアップルタブレット、自社でチップを設計する PA Semi、米東岸（ノースカロライナ）で進行するデータセンター、意欲的なアップルストアの展開、複数デバイス間の同期システムや RFID 関連の特許出願、さらにはどんどん積み上がるキャッシュなどを考え合わせると、2010 年がアップルにとって何か大きな年になることだけは間違いなさそうだ。

ジグソーパズルを埋めるピースがこれからも次々と出てくるに違いない。

2010 年は楽しみな年になりそうだ。

完璧でないならない方がいい

Steve がウッドサイドで隣りに住んでいたときのことを覚えている。彼の家には家具がなかった。Steve を満足させる家具は世界中探してもないんだなと思い知ったものだ。彼にとっては完璧なものが得られないのならむしろない方がいいのだ。

I remember when Steve was my neighbor in Woodside, Calif., and he had no furniture. It struck me that there wasn’t furniture good enough for Steve in the world. He’d rather have nothing if he couldn’t have perfection.

本格的なアンドロイドフォーン Droid の登場によって、初めて iPhone と対等に比較できるスマートフォンが出現したように思える

iPhone との比較も花盛りで、Greg Kumparak（MobileCrunch）の渾身のレポートは読み応えがある。

この Droid がピンチ（pinching）に対応していないことについて興味深い議論が行なわれている。「ジェスチャーは技術ではなく言語だ」というのだ。

Droid にピンチがないのは何故か

「アップルが iPhone で用いているマルチタッチジェスチャーの特徴的なものは『ピンチ』（pinching）だ。とくに『ピンチでズーム』（pinch-to-zoom：拡大・縮小のピンチ）がそうだ。MobileSafari で拡大・縮小するのにピンチでズームを使う。写真を拡大・縮小するのにもピンチでズームを使う。地図を拡大・縮小するのにもピンチでズームを使う。」

ジェスチャーは特許ではない

個人的には技術革新に大賛成だ。そもそも特許を通じて獲得した技術革新によって発明家が利益を享受できるからこそ企業は技術革新を行なうのだ。しかし同時にまた、ジェスチャーは創造可能なものではなく、特許で押さえるべきものでものない。ピンチでズームは誰でも常識的にやることだ。それ以外のやり方が考えられるだろうか。アップルは何らかの形で特許を得たいと考える。マルチタッチをデバイスに認識させ、それに反応させる技術の特許が得たいのだ。しかしジェスチャーそのものを特許にすることがあってはならない。

Personally, I’m all about innovation. Allowing an innovator to benefit from his or her innovation through patents is what makes businesses innovate in the first place. At the same time however, gestures are not innovative, nor should they be patentable. Pinch-to-zoom is just common sense. How else would you do it with one motion? If Apple wants to patent something, patent the technology that allows the device to recognize multi touch and react to it, don’t patent the gestures themselves.

ジェスチャーは言語だ

ジェスチャーは言語と同じ扱いを受けるべきだ。タッチを用いるデバイスの手話言語みたいな扱いだ。必要とされているのはタッチ可能なデバイスで使われる共通なジェスチャーのセットなのだ。デバイスが異なれば使う言語も異なるということであってはならない。

Gestures should be treated as a language, like sign language for touch devices. We need a common set of gestures to interact with all touch enabled devices. I shouldn’t have to lean a different language just to use a different device.

ハイパーリンクの愚を繰り返すな

この状況は何年も前のハイパーリンクをめぐる騒ぎを思い起こさせる。ハイパーリンクのライセンスを得るべく BT は Prodigy はじめ１６の ISP（AOL を含む）とコンタクトをとらなくてはならないハメになったのだ。もしもアップルが同じやり方を踏襲して「ピンチでズーム」が「自分たちのものだ」と強制したりすることになれば、自分としてはジェスチャーに関する特許が（他社のものも含めて）すべて失われることを願うのみだ。

This situation reminds me of the hyperlink fiasco from many years ago when BT contacted Prodigy and 16 other ISPs, including AOL asking them to buy a hyperlink licence. If Apple goes down this path and tries to enforce pinch-to-zoom as “theirs” I would only hope it, as well as any other gesture parents, would lose.

傾聴に値する議論だと思う。

アップルのマウスによってコンピュータの世界は一新した。しかしポインティングデバイスとしてのマウスはアップルの発明ではなかった。

iPhone の登場によってマルチタッチなしの世界は考えられなくなった。マルチタッチについてはかつて iPhone が登場した 2007 年のキーノートで Steve Jobs 自身が「ちゃんと特許で押さえてあるよ」（… and BOY have we patented it!）と誇らしげに語ったものだ。

Apple is working on some sort of tablet computer, which has reportedly been eating up much of Steve Jobs’ time.

だからアップルのエンジニアたちが製造工場のあるアジアとアメリカとの間を飛行機で頻繁に往復しているというのも頷ける。

So it makes sense that Apple engineers would be spending more time on planes lately, shuttling between the U.S. and Asia, where its manufacturing occurs.
