アマゾンの Kindle Fire のレビューがどっと登場している。
批判的なものが多いような気がするが、Instapaper の開発者 Marco Arment の強烈なレビューが話題になっている。

使う気にならない
Kindle Fire は本や雑誌、新聞を読んだり、ビデオを見たり、アプリやゲームをするのには適しているだろうと期待した。
I expected the Kindle Fire to be good for books, great for magazines and newspapers, great for video, and good for apps and games.
実際はそうではなかった。自分が２日間しか使っていないことは認める。だから長期間使ってみた印象ではない。しかし正直いって、いい印象は持てそうにない。これ以上使ってみたいという気にならないからだ。これは致命的だ。
In practice, it’s none of these. Granted, I’ve only spent two days with it, so I can’t share any long-term impressions. But I’m honestly unlikely to have any, because this isn’t a device that makes me want to use it more. And that’s fatal.

いろいろ試してみた
Kindle Fire で本の一部を読んだ。３冊の雑誌を読み、新聞を読んでみた。ゲームを２つやり、異なる２つのソースのテレビ番組を４本見た。Ｅメールのセットアップをしたら思わぬ時間がかかった。いい RSS リーダーは見つからなかった。うっかりして繰ったページが何ページも飛んでしまった。タップを繰り返しても始めはなにも起きなかったのに、アプリがいくつかクラッシュしたり、Fire 自体がクラッシュしてしまった。
I’ve read part of a book, three magazines, and a newspaper. I’ve played two games and watched four TV shows from two sources. I’ve also taken far too long to set up my email, failed to find a good RSS reader, turned a lot of pages accidentally, repeated taps that did nothing the first time, and crashed a few apps and the Fire itself.

Android の iPod touch
Fire はいわば Android 版の iPod touch といったところで、キャリア契約の縛りなしでも使える初めての手頃な価格の Android デバイスだ。
The Fire is an Android version, sort of, of the iPod Touch. It’s the first device available that’s inexpensive and offers Android in a somewhat reasonable package without a cellular contract.

どれにも使えない
でも私が言えるのはせいぜいそこまで。ゲームプレーヤとしてはダメ。アプリのプラットフォームとしてもダメだ。ウェブブラウザとしても、ビデオプレーヤとしても、そしてとてもガッカリしたことに Kindle としてもダメだ。
But that’s just about all I can say for it. It’s a bad game player, a bad app platform, a bad web browser, a bad video player, and, most disappointingly, a bad Kindle.
Instapaper のテストに必要なければ、突っ返してしまいたいところだ。
If I didn’t need the Fire for Instapaper testing, I’d return it.

安価な７インチ版タブレットということで期待が大きかったので、Kindle Fire につていはいろいろ気になることがある。
まずひとつは、Marco Arment がいうようにそんなにヒドいのかという点だ。
業界定番のモスバーグおじさんのレビューはどういっているだろうか。

モスバーグおじさんのレビュー
ハッキリさせておきたいのは、499 ドルのエントリーレベル iPad 2 と比べると Kindle Fire は能力も性能も劣るということだ。アプリは少ないし、スクリーンは小さい。バッテリーの持ちも悪い。ウェブブラウザは遅く、内部ストレージは半分、カメラもマイクもついていない。ユーザーインターフェイスもアップルのなめらかさに比べると融通が利かず、イライラさせられることもある。
To be clear, the Kindle Fire is much less capable and versatile than the entry-level $499 iPad 2. It has a fraction of the apps, a smaller screen, much weaker battery life, a slower Web browser, half the internal storage and no cameras or microphone. It also has a rigid and somewhat frustrating user interface far less fluid than Apple’s.

But the Fire has some big things going for it. First, the $199 price, though the Fire’s seven-inch screen is less than half the surface area of the iPad’s display. Second, the Amazon and Kindle brands, already known and loved for e-readers and more. Third, Amazon is the only major tablet maker other than Apple with a large, famous, easy-to-use content ecosystem that sells music, video, books and periodicals. The Fire can be thought of as a hardware front end to all that cloud content.
最後に、Fire はグーグルの Android OS をベースとしているという点では他のタブレットと同じでも、アマゾンは Android を見えなくしまうという大胆なやり方をした。ユーザーインターフェイスも、グーグルのアプリやサービスのほとんどを（グーグル app store も含め）退けた。Fire のソフトウェアは、すべてがアマゾンが販売するコンテンツとアプリのためのものであり、その購入を容易にするという点に絞られているのだ。
Finally, while the Fire, like many other tablets, is based on Google’s Android operating system, Amazon has taken the bold step of hiding Android. It shuns its user interface and nearly all of Google’s apps and services, including Google’s app store. The Fire’s software is all about the content and apps Amazon has sold you and the easy purchase of more.

アップルのタブレットなら 1000 ドルはするだろうとみんなが考えたのを覚えているかい？ たった１年半前のことだ。みんなスポイルされちゃったんだよ。要すれば iPad のように動くガジェットなら 500 ドル以上するってことだ。参入のハードルはとても高いんだ。
Remember when everyone was sure that Apple’s tablet was going to cost around $1,000? That was 18 months ago. We’re spoiled. The fact of the matter is that the iPad behaves like a piece of technology that should cost more than $500. Apple set the bar very high.
ライバルが追いつくにはしばらくかかるだろう。世の中すべて「安物買いの銭失い」さ。
It’s going to take the competition a while to catch up. With most things in life, you get what you pay for.

《Update 2》次世代 Kindle Fire のウワサ（１１月２０日）
Kindle Fire についてもうひとつ気になること。次世代 Fire が出るというウワサだ。しかもそっちの方がホンモノだと・・・
この話は当初からあった。
今回の Fire はアマゾン内部の開発チームが作ったものではなく、外部にアウトソースしたものだという話をスクープをした Ryan Block がつぎのように述べている。

開発の遅れ
あ、それからもうひとつ・・・次世代のもっといいアマゾンタブレットが間もなく出そうだ。

Kindle チームはカラーのＥリーダーを間に合わせるため、RIM の PlayBook を利用したという話を昨日投稿した。急場しのぎに間に合わせるためだったといいかけたのだが、その後私が聞いた話はすべて開発が遅れていたことを裏付けている。（アマゾンが Kindle タブレットを今年始めに出そうとした話はもはや秘密ではなさそうだ。）
Yesterday I posted about how the Kindle teams used the RIM PlayBook to get a color e-reader product out the door (gdgt.com/discuss/the-amazon-tablet-will-look-like-…). I stopped short of saying they’re rushing it out the door, but by all accounts I’ve heard that it was indeed delayed. (It doesn’t seem like much of a secret now that Amazon seems to have been trying to get a Kindle tablet out a little earlier this year.)

ホンモノの第２世代が来春にも
ともかく、「当座しのぎのために」Kindle タブレットをクリスマス商戦に間に合わせるということをした結果、アーリーアダプターやクリスマスの買い物客は深刻な影響を受けることになりそうだ。私のソース（複数）によれば、Kindle タブレット（現在 Kindle Fire と呼ばれている）の第２世代は早ければ来年第１四半期に出るという。そうだ、それほどすぐに。もちろんこれは計画の話だ。第１世代製品の遅れが製品開発サイクルを狂わせてしまった。
Well, this delay to get the “stopgap” Kindle tablet out in time for the holiday season this year may have pretty serious consequences for early adopters and holiday shoppers: my sources tell me the second-gen Kindle tablet (or Kindle Fire, as it’s now been dubbed) will be out in Q1 of 2012 — yes, that soon. That was always the plan, but the delays of the v1 product have messed up Amazon’s release cycle.
もっと悪いことに、Quanta のものを利用しただけの第１世代と違い、第２世代タブレットこそアマゾンが本気で開発しているデバイスらしいのだ。
And what’s worse, the second tablet — which Amazon didn’t just take more or less off the shelf from ODM manufacturer Quanta — seems to be the device Amazon really believes in.

予定は未定だが
確かにハードウェアの世界には遅れがつきものだ。予定は遅れ、戦略も変わる。発表の見直しはいつものことだ。だからこの第２世代 Kindle タブレットも遅れるかもしれない。しかし予定どおりなら、初代タブレットの包装を解くいとまもおかず第２世代が登場することになりそうだ。自腹を切って買うのなら、しばらく買うのを待つんだけど・・・
Granted, in the hardware world there are often delays; timelines shift and cascade, strategies change, and launches get rejiggered all the time — so this true 2nd-gen Kindle tablet may be pushed back, too. One can rarely say with certainty that a product will get out on schedule. But if all goes according to plan, it looks like you’ll be seeing the second Kindle tablet not too long after you take the plastic off your first. If it was my money, I’d hold out a bit.

来年早々第２世代が出るとのウワサはその後も後を絶たない。Quanta に代わって Foxconn が受注したという話もある。
Kindle 自体もアップデートを重ねて今日の人気と信用を獲得したように、Kindle Fire の未来も侮れなさそうだ。
