アップルファンなら誰でも知っているビデオがある。例のマイクロソフトを散々こき下ろすビデオだ。

それは失われたと思われていたインタビュービデオの一部だった・・・

紛失したと思われてきたビデオ

元アップル社員だった Robert Cringely が PBS のために 1995 年に行なったインタビューで、Steve Jobs はマイクロソフトのことをこき下ろす。放映されたのはたった１０分足らずで、「Triumph of the Nerds: The Rise of Accidental Empires」の中で使われた。残りは輸送の途中で紛失したと長い間信じられてきた。それが１１月１６・１７日の劇場放映に向けて準備中だ。

Steve Jobs ripped Microsoft a new one back in 1995, when former Apple employee Robert Cringely interviewed his old boss for a PBS special. Fewer than 10 minutes of that crucial videotaped conversation made it into Triumph of the Nerds: The Rise of Accidental Empires, but the rest — believed to be lost in shipping — is now heading for movie theaters Nov. 16 and 17.

自宅ガレージで発見

そのタイトルは「Steve Jobs: The Lost Interview」（スティーブ・ジョブズ：失われたインタビュー）。インタビューの全体を含む、７０分の再映ものだ。Jobs の死後、「Triumph of the Nerds」を監督した Paul Sen がロンドン自宅のガレージでテープ発見した。

Billed as Steve Jobs: The Lost Interview, the 70-minute feature repurposes a copy of the full interview, which Triumph of the Nerds director Paul Sen discovered in his London garage last month when he went searching for the tape after Jobs’ death.

ビデオを修復

「テープは PAL-VHS 方式で、D1 マスターからプロの機材でダビングされた。とはいっても VHS は所詮 VHS なのでひどいものだ」と Cringely は発見後自分のブログで述べている。「それでも 1995 年以降ビデオ技術の発展はすばらしいので、テープに解像度を上げる秘術を施したわけだ。」

“The tape is PAL-VHS, dubbed on professional equipment from a D1 master, but VHS is still VHS, which is to say crappy,” Cringely said on his blog in a post about the discovery. “Yet video technology has come a long way since 1995, so we’ve been throwing resolution-enhancement voodoo at that tape.”

歯に衣着せぬライバル評

これはすばらしい再発見だった。ビデオソースは確かに１０年以上積もった埃でひどい状態になっていたけれど。１０年前のこのインタビューで Jobs は、アップル在職中に会った当時のテクノロジー世界のリーダーたちに対する歯に衣着せぬ思いを語っている。冒頭のクリップは、当初放映されたオリジナルからの抜粋だが、ゼロックス PARC を訪れてグラフィカルユーザーインターフェイスを初めて見たときの素晴しい瞬間を語っている。

lt’s a remarkable rediscovery, even though the quality of the source material, which gathered dust for more than a decade, leaves a little to be desired. The content of the decade-old interview offers a candid look at the tech world’s most successful leader, as caught between Jobs’ stints at Apple. In the clip above, an excerpt from the original PBS broadcast, Jobs describes the Eureka moment when he saw his first graphical user interface during a visit to Xerox PARC.

マイクロソフトもこき下ろす

修復されたインタビューには同じような場面がいくつも含まれている。その中で「Jobs はマイクロソフトの製品がいかにいい加減であるかひたすらこき下ろしている」と Landmark Theatres のプレスリリースは述べている。

There are many such moments in the newly restored interview, in which Jobs “sorely criticized Microsoft for making bad products,” according to a Landmark Theatres press release.

「これは基本的には編集を加える前のインタビューだ。普通ならデレビでは見られない代物だ」と Cringely はいう。「Steve にそんなすばらしいパフォーマンスをさせたのは自分だ」とも。

“[This is] essentially an unedited interview — definitely not the sort of thing you’d normally see on TV,” Cringely said. “It’s me coaxing Steve into a great performance.”

一般劇場で公開

レイティングなしの７０分もの「Steve Jobs: The Lost Interview」は、カリフォルニア州パロアルトを含む１７の都市の Landmark Theatres で二晩ずつ放映される。

Steve Jobs: The Lost Interview, unrated and running 70 minutes, will play the two-night run at Landmark Theatres in 17 cities including Palo Alto, Calif.

一般劇場での公開に適しているかどうかはともかく、とても興味のあるビデオだ。

一段落したところで YouTube にも投稿されると思われるので楽しみ・・・

例のこき下ろしビデオは長い間ナゾだった。Jobs がどんな場面で話したのかさっぱり分からなかったからだ。

Cringely のインタビューだと知ってなるほどと思った。

もうひとつのナゾも解けた。Cringely の辛辣な Jobs 評だ。

アップルを追われた Jobs が失意のどん底にあったことを踏まえた心理分析で、多分これまで書かれたものの中でいちばん辛辣ではないかと思う。

そんな分析ができたのも、このインタビューを含め当時の Jobs を直接知っていたからだった（？）・・・
