シリコンバレーのトップリーダーや故 Steve Jobs の友人たちは日曜夜地元のテクノロジーの巨人を追悼するため Memorial Church に集った。Jobs は膵臓がんとの長い闘いの後１０月５日に５６歳の若さで亡くなった。
Top Silicon Valley leaders and other friends of former Apple CEO Steve Jobs gathered in Memorial Church Sunday evening to honor the local tech giant. Jobs died on Oct. 5 at the age of 56 after a years-long battle with pancreatic cancer.

６時半のメモリアルサービスが始まる１時間半前には、黒い服を着たシークレットサービスが Main Quad［中庭］を空にし、教会の裏口を仕切り、儀式後のレセプションとディナーが行なわれる Cantor Arts Center［映像美術館］にセキュリティガードを配した。Palm Drive［大学へのメインストリート］では無許可の車の乗り入れが禁じられ、シャトルバスや黒塗りの SUV、ゴルフカートなど参列者をキャンパスの中央へ運ぶ車が列をなした。Oval から Cantor へ至る歩道にはキャンドルが並べられた。
Ninety minutes before the 6:30 p.m. service, black-clad Secret Service Guards cleared out the Main Quad, walled off the rear entrance of the church and guarded the Cantor Arts Center, which hosted a post-service reception and dinner. Palm Drive was closed to unauthorized traffic, and a fleet of shuttle buses, dark stretch SUVs and golf carts transported mourners to the center of campus. Candles lined sidewalks across the Oval leading to Cantor.

The memorial also drew national figures from the political arena, including Secretary of State Hilary Clinton and former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, former Vice President Al Gore and Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel. Gore is a board member at Apple and Jobs was a significant donor to Emanuel’s campaign.

Secret Service officials confirmed that Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, California Governor Jerry Brown and California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom also attended.

The memorial for Steve Jobs on the Stanford University campus Sunday night featured an intimate series of tributes from friends, colleagues and family.

「クレージーなひとたち」を朗読した娘
メモリアルの参列者によれば、Jobs 氏の娘のひとりが「The Crazy Ones」（クレージーなひとたち）の一節を朗読したという。The Crazy Ones はアップルの TV コマーシャルのひとつで、Muhammad Ali、Ted Turner、John Lennon などの伝説的人物に捧げられたものだ。（俳優 Richard Dreyfuss のナレーションによるものはこちら、Jobs 氏自身の未発表のナレーションはこちら。）
According to someone present at the service, one of Mr. Jobs’s daughters read the script from the Apple television commercial known as “The Crazy Ones,” part of an advertising campaign that saluted iconic figures like Muhammad Ali, Ted Turner and John Lennon (here is a clip of the original version of the commercial as narrated by the actor Richard Dreyfuss and an unaired version narrated by Mr. Jobs himself).

Larry Ellison

Larry Ellison, the Oracle chief and a longtime friend of Mr. Jobs, said their relationship consisted of walks in the foothills of Silicon Valley near their homes, the person at the service said. Mr. Ellison also offered a moment of levity when describing his Hawaiian vacations with Mr. Jobs. He said the trips always included four people: Mr. Jobs, his wife, Lauren Powell Jobs, Mr. Ellison and whichever woman Mr. Ellison — who has been married and divorced several times — was dating at the time.

Jonathan Ive

Jonathan Ive, Apple’s senior vice president for industrial design, spoke about working with Mr. Jobs. During brainstorming sessions, Mr. Ive said, Mr. Jobs would often come up with a lot of “dopey ideas,” along with good ones too.
