CES の間は出展していないアップルの動向について注意が必要だ。

CES 開催初日には Mac App Store をぶっつけてきた。初日のダウンロードが 100 万本を超える大成功だという。

もうひとつは Verizon の iPhone・・・

１月１１日のスペシャルイベント開催について Jim Dalrymple が第一報を報じている。

Verizon のスペシャルイベント

Verizon Wireless は、2011 年１月１１日に開催されるスペシャルイベントへの招待状を限られたメディアに金曜日送付した。

Verizon Wireless on Friday sent an invitation to select press to attend a special event on January 11, 2011.

The Loop が受領した招待状によれば、イベントはニューヨークで開催される。アップルについて招待状は何も触れていないが Verizon iPhone がらみかもしれない。アップルのスペシャルイベントはクパティーノのアップル本社で行なわれるのが通例だ。

The Verizon event will be held in New York, according to the invitation received by The Loop. While it doesn’t mention anything about Apple this could be the Verizon iPhone. Typically, Apple’s special events are held on the company’s campus in Cupertino, Calif.

イベントはニューヨークのリンカーンセンターで１１時から開催される。

The event will take place at the Lincoln Center in New York at 11:00 am.

スペシャルイベントの招待状

さあ、これがそうだ。Verizon は来週の１月１１日（火曜日）にニューヨークのリンカーンセンター（フレデリックローズホール）でスペシャルイベントを開催する。テーマについては触れていないが、Verizon に近い筋によれば、例の長い間ウワサされていた Verizon iPhone の発表だという。問題は Verizon の Lowell McAdam［社長兼 COO］と一緒にアップルの Steve Jobs が舞台に登場するだろうかという点だ。たしかに Verizon iPhone は大きな関心を呼んでいるが、所詮一キャリアの発表に過ぎない。しかも昨年モデルの iPhone だ。もし新しいハードウェアが出るといったそれ以上の話なら、間違いなくイベントはクパティーノないしサンフランシスコで行なわれるハズだ。

And there it is: Verizon will hold a special event at New York City’s Lincoln Center (Frederick P. Rose Hall) on Jan. 11–next Tuesday. No details on its focus, but sources close to the company tell me this will indeed prove to be the long-rumored Verizon iPhone announcement. Question now is will Apple CEO Steve Jobs join Verizon President and COO Lowell McAdam onstage to make it. Remember, while there’s an enormous amount of interest in the Verizon iPhone, this really isn’t much more than a carrier announcement — for last year’s iPhone. If it were more (e.g., a hardware announcement), you can bet the event would be in Cupertino or San Francisco.

間違いなく Verizon iPhone の発表だ

招待状画像のひどい JPEG 圧縮ぶりをみると、キャリアのセンスのなさが一目瞭然だ。

The horrendous JPEG compression on the invitation nicely conveys the sense that the carriers can’t do anything right.

招待状には iPhone のことは触れられていないが、しかしこれは間違いなく Verizon iPhone の発表だと言い切っていい。なおひと言、Gizmodo は招待状を受け取っていない。

It doesn’t say anything about the iPhone, but trust me, this is the iPhone-on-Verizon announcement. One tell: Gizmodo didn’t get an invitation.

John Paczkowsk が Verizon イベントに Steve Jobs が出席するとの続報を出したが、John Gruber はそれを否定している。

なぜニューヨーク？

来週火曜日の Verizon iPhone 発表イベントが Verizon 主催でニューヨークで行なわれ、アップル主催でクパティーノで行なわれないのはなぜか？ その理由に対する私の考えではこうだ。「来週イベントを行う」とアップルがいうと、ビッグニュースと新製品をみんなが期待することをアップルはよく承知している。もしアップルがこのイベントを主催すれば、予期される Verizon との取り決めだけでなく、新しい iPad やもしかしたら iPhone 5 まで発表されるのではないかという憶測で手がつけられなくなるだろう。今回はアップル新製品の発表はない。我々専門家は CDMA iPhone 4 が GSM iPhone 4 とは異なるものであることを理解している。しかし一般消費者の目には、同じ iPhone でキャリアが異なるだけとしか分からない。アップルとしては何を見せたらいいのか？ 何をデモすればいいのか？

So why is next Tuesday’s announcement of the Verizon iPhone a Verizon-hosted event in New York and not an Apple-hosted event in Cupertino? Here’s my theory. Apple is fully aware that when they say “We’re having an event next week” that people expect big news and a new product. If they were hosting this event, speculation would be rampant that it would involve a new iPad and maybe an iPhone 5, in addition to the expected Verizon deal. There is no new Apple product, though. We nerds know that a CDMA iPhone 4 is a different device than the GSM iPhone 4, but from a consumer perspective, it’s the same phone but just works on a different carrier. What would Apple show? What would there be to demo?

冷静に振る舞う

こういう場合アップルは、キャリアが異なるだけと冷静に振る舞うのだ。いいニュースだが、ビッグニュースではないというわけだ。アップルにとってのポイントは、「Verizon を iPhone キャリアに加えることができてよろこんでいる」ということに尽きる。

This is the sort of thing where Apple needs to play it cool, and act like this is just another carrier. Good news, but not big news. The bottom line from Apple is going to be something like, “We’re delighted to add Verizon as an iPhone carrier”. That’s it.

AT&T を悪くいえない

それにもし Verizon がステージで自分たちのネットワークが AT&T より優れていると自慢したければ、アップルとしてはその場にいるわけにはいかない。アップルは AT&T をやめて Verizon にするわけではないのだ。Verizon のイベントなら Verizon は AT&T をけなすことができる。アップルのイベントならそうさせるわけにはいかない。

And if Verizon wants to do some on-stage bragging about the ways that their network is better than AT&T’s, Apple can’t really be a part of that. Apple is not leaving AT&T for Verizon. They’re adding Verizon as a peer to AT&T. Verizon can disparage AT&T at a Verizon event. Apple couldn’t let them do that at an Apple event.

Jobs の出席はない

だから Jobs が出席するとしたらそいつはオドロキだ。出席するのは Phil Schiller か Greg Joswiak（それとも Tim Cook もあり？）だろう。しかし John Paczkowski は Jobs が出席するといっている。

So, I’ll be surprised if Jobs is there. I think it’ll be Phil Schiller or Greg Joswiak (or, who knows, maybe even Tim Cook?). But John Paczkowski reports that Jobs will appear:

「100% 確実というわけではないが、複数の情報筋によれば、事情が許す限り、Jobs が McAdam と一緒にニューヨークの壇上に現われ、Verizon の端末ラインナップに iPhone を加える発表に立ち会うだろうという。」［AllThingsD］

“While the appearance isn’t 100 percent assured, sources in a position to know tell me that, barring any unforeseen circumstances, Jobs will likely join McAdam onstage in New York when he announces the addition of the iPhone to its handset lineup.”

それも間もなく分かることだ。
