否定論者は悔しがってツメを噛むかもしれない。なぜって、アップルが OS X から如何にして iOS へ移行するつもりか iMac と MacBook を使ってはっきりと説明しているからだ。これぞ大ホームランだ。デスクトップとして使った iMac を、すぐその直後に巨大な iPad として使う様子を想像してほしい。このドリームマシンで iGames をやったらどうか。両面見開きの本をこれで読むとしたらどうか。信じられない！ ついにアップルはマックの OS X がどうやって iOS と共存できるかその秘密を明らかにした。これぞ百聞は一見に如かずだ。
The naysayers will have to eat crow on this one, because Apple’s method of transitioning from OS X to iOS is clearly outlined for both the iMac and MacBook – and it’s a grand slam home run. Imagine having an iMac on your desktop one minute and a gigantic iPad the next. Imagine playing iGames on this dream machine – Wow! Imagine reading a double-page book on this – Unbelievable! Apple takes the mystery out of how OS X could finally co-exist with iOS on a Mac and you’ve got to see this one to believe it.

Patently Apple サイトがヨーロッパの特許申請（2009 年９月申請、2010 年１月公開）から興味深い事実を明らかにした。その特許申請には、普通に使えばデスクトップ、角度を変えればタブレットに変化する iMac touch の詳細が説明されているのだ。
The website Patently Apple has uncovered some European patent filings filed in September 2009 and first published in January 2010. The document outlines a system for an iMac touch, a device that acts like a standard desktop computer in one orientation and a tablet in another.

傾斜角を感知して
そのアイデアというのはこうだ。直立した角度では普通の iMac ないしはフラットスクリーンモニターとして使い、マウスおよびキーボードでコントロールする。傾斜角にすると加速度計が起動して、Mac OS X から iOS へと移行し、マルチタッチモードになるというものだ。
The idea is that when the device is in the upright position, like a standard iMac or flatscreen monitor, it can be controlled using a mouse and keyboard. When reclined, an accelerometer will trigger advanced multi-touch mode and switch the operating system from Mac OS X to iOS.

iPhone/iPad もコントロール
モード/OS 間をシームレスに移行する方法ほか、iMac touch から iPhone/iPad を周辺機器としてコントロールするやり方も特許には詳述されている。
In addition to seamlessly switching modes/operating systems, the patent information also details a system that would allow peripheral control of an iPhone or iPad from the iMac touch.

スーパーデバイス
２つの OS を共存させて、傾斜角の変化でシームレスに移行するというアイデアは、デスクトップにとってすばらしいことはもちろんだが、ノートブックにとってはもっと決定的だ。自分は MacBook Pro も iPad も両方とも気に入っているが、２つを合体させてスーパーデバイスが出来れば、両方のいいとこ取りでベストに違いない。
The idea of the two operating systems co-existing and switching seamlessly based on orientation is awesome for a desktop and even more killer for a netbook. I love both my MacBook Pro and my iPad, but if I could combine them into one super device, that would be the best of all worlds.

Magic Trackpad もその例？
特許申請のいくつかは 2007 年になされている。ということはアップルがデスクトップのマルチタッチ化に取り組んでからかなりになるということだ。最近出た Magic Trackpad は、アップルがゆっくりと、しかし確実にデスクトップのタッチ化に向かっていることの現われかもしれない。
Some of the information in these patents go back to 2007, so it is clear Apple has been hard at work perfecting touch for the desktop for quite some time. The company’s most recent accessory, the Magic Trackpad, is just another indication that the company is slowly but surely aiming to bring touch to the desktop.
