細分化するモバイル OS、統一化するウェブブラウザ

モバイル世界の基本的動向について Jason Grigsby が興味深い報告をしている。

モバイル OS は細分化へ、モバイルブラウザは統一化へと、それぞれ逆の方向に向かっているというのだ。

モバイル OS とモバイルウェブを比較すると、それぞれが異なる方向に向かっていることがはっきりする。

細分化するモバイル OS

［Smartphone Operating System Market Share］

2006 年には２つのモバイル OS［Symbian と Windows Mobile］で市場の 81% を支配した。今では１０の異なるスマートフォン OS がある。

In 2006, two mobile operating systems controlled 81 percent of the market. This year there are 10 different smartphone operating systems.

最近でも OS 細分化の動きは続いている。

・Nokia と Intel が新しいオープンソースの MeeGo を開発
・HP が Palm を買収［WebOS］
・Windows Mobile に代わる Windows Phone 7
・Samsung が新 OS Bada を今夏発表予定
・HTC が新 OS を検討中とのウワサ
・Motorola がモバイル OS を買収とのウワサ

モバイル OS の分化はまだ続いており、当分の間終わる気配はない。

There are more mobile operating systems coming and no signs of the mobile OS market narrowing any time soon.

HTML5 と WebKit のサポート

その一方、モバイルウェブの方は HTML5 と WebKit を軸に統一化の方向をたどっている。

By contrast, the mobile web is converging on HTML5 and WebKit.

また同じ時期に、モバイルブラウザはそれぞれ異なる固有のレンダリングエンジンをベースとする時代から、市販されたスマートフォンの 85% を WebKit が動かす時代となっている。

Over that same period of time, mobile browsers have gone from many different proprietary rendering engines to the point where WebKit alone will power browsers in more than 85 percent of the smartphones sold.

OS は２つから多数へ、ブラウザは多数からひとつへ。２つの核となるモバイルテクノロジーが、まったく逆の方向へ向かっている。
