私は謝りたい

Jobs の病状追っかけの先頭を走っていた Gizmodo がつぎのような記事を載せた。

職業的にいえば我々は為すべきことを為したと思っており、Jesús Diaz と一緒にした仕事を誇りに思っている。しかし、ひとりの人間としていえば、スティーブの健康状態について書いたことにまったく別の気持ちを抱いている。たぶんこれは普通のひとがジャーナリストの冷徹な究明を嫌う格好の例だろう。この二週間の間、ときには仕事が嫌になり、自分自身すら嫌悪した。

Professionally, I think we did what we were supposed to do, and let me be clear, I am proud of the work I did with Jes徭 Diaz on this series. But personally, I feel very different about the writing we did on Steve’s health. I think this is a good example of the kind of cold investigating that makes everyday people hate journalists. And over the last two weeks, I’ve hated my job and sometimes, myself, too.

誰かの病状について書くこと、他の専門医を取材して瀕死かどうか調べたり、Whipple 手術式［膵臓がんの切除術］の生存確率や生存期間を調べ、死にかけているという話を聞いたというひとを知っているという情報源をチェックする・・・、これらはすべて基本的には破廉恥な行為だ。

Writing about a man’s health, trying to figure out if he’s dying or not by talking to third-party expert doctors, checking statistics for Whipple procedure survival rates and timelines, checking in with sources who know people who know people who have heard that he’s dying—they’re all basically indecent things to do.

私は謝りたい。スティーブを知るすべてのひとに、ニュースで病状を報じられたことがあるひとを知るすべてのひとに、そして私の両親に。たぶん両親は、私が仕事とはいえ誰かの病状を激しく書き立てていることを恥じているだろう。追っかけハゲタカジャーナリストでなくちゃんとした人間に育てたはずだから・・・

I want to apologize to everyone who knows Steve, everyone who’s known anyone who’s been sick that’s been covered in the press, and my parents, who are probably ashamed I’m tracking a man’s health so rabidly at work, and raised me to be better than some journalist/vulture dickhead.

そしてスティーブにも謝りたい。
