アップルは本気で CES への乗り換えを考えている？

ニューヨークタイムズのテクニカルライター David Pogue はアップルお気に入りのライターのひとりだ。今回の Phil Schiller のキーノートでも Pogue の発言を引用しているほどだ。

多芸の才人としても知られる Pogue は、今回のマックワールドで Ge Wang（例の iPhone アプリ「オカリナ」の作者）などと一緒にミュージカルをやってのけたらしい。その彼を Philip Elmer-DeWitt がインタビューしている。

Jobs がキーノートに出なかった本当の理由

パフォーマンスの後のインタビューで、Pogue はつぎのように語った。Jobs の健康問題を軽んずるわけではないが、彼がキーノートを取りやめた本当の理由は、マックワールドで発表できる製品が iWork と iLife と 17 インチラップトップのアップグレードだけなのを見て、これじゃ自分がやるに値しないと判断したことにあると思う。健康の衰えではなく、これがキーノートを Phil Schiller に譲った原因だ、と。

Interviewed after the performance, Pogue said that he did not intend to make light of Jobs’ health problems. He believes that the real reason Apple’s CEO skipped the keynote was that Jobs reviewed Apple’s (AAPL) product line-up for Macworld — upgrades of iWork and iLife and a 17″ laptop — and decided it wasn’t worth his time. That, says Pogue, not failing health, is why Jobs had senior vice president Phil Schiller give the keynote in his stead.

Pogue 自身ニューヨークタイムズに「奇妙なマックワールドエキスポ」という感想記事を書いているが、その中で Phil Schiller から聞き出したというアップルの製品開発スケジュールに関連する部分が興味深い。

アップルの製品発表スケジュール

キーノートのあと Phil Schiller と話をした。これまで 25 年も巡礼行を続けてきたマック信者を悲しませてまでアップルがマックワールドエキスポの参加を取りやめるのは何故か尋ねてみた。

I spoke with Phil Schiller after his talk. I asked him if he could be any more specific about why Apple pulled out of the Macworld Expo—to the heartbreak of the Mac faithful who have loved making the pilgrimage to this event for 25 years.

彼の答はプレス発表と同じだった。アップルストアで毎週アップル製品に触れるひとの数はマックワールドエキスポ 100 回分より多くなった、トレードショーにはカネと手間をかける価値がなくなったのだ、と。

He said what the Apple press release said—that Apple stores introduce more people to Apple’s products in a week than 100 Macworld Expos. Trade shows just aren’t worth the effort and the money.

しかしまた彼は次のようにも指摘した。毎年１月に眩いばかりのショーをやることができなくなった、大量に製造し、みんなを圧倒するそんな製品を毎年出すことがもう持続不可能（unsustainable）になった、と。またアップルの製品開発は毎年おおよそ次のようなサイクルで行なわれるとも述べた。すなわち、ホリディシーズン向け製品は１１月頃、新学期向けは夏の終わり、iPod は１０月、iLife 関連は例年３月、そして iPhone については６月というサイクルに従って。１月じゃこのどれにも当てはまらない。

But he also pointed out that having to come up with another dazzling show every January—a huge production, starring knock-’em-dead new products every year—was unsustainable. He noted that Apple marches to certain annual product cycles: the holiday season (Novemberish), the educational buying season (late summer), the iPod product cycle (October), the iLife development cycle (usually March), the iPhone cycle (June). January doesn’t fit ANY of them.

一方、アップルはマックワールドをやめるだけではなく、CES に出展するようになるのではないかというウワサも根強い。

本気で乗り換える？

ある情報筋によれば、アップルはマックワールドを見捨てて、来年からは CES（米家電見本市）に出展するという。

Apple is ditching MacWorld to instead exhibit at CES next year instead, according to one source.

「アップルで働く友人」から聞いたというこの情報筋は、毎年同時期に開催される CES の方がアップルが「注目を浴びる」からだと主張する。

The source, citing “friends who work at Apple,” insisted the company is ditching MacWorld because it will “go large” at CES, which typically runs concurrently with MacWorld in early January.

これは単なる憶測ではなくちゃんとした情報だと、この情報筋は断言する。

The source insisted his information was solid, not just speculation.

「もはや決定済みなのだ」と。

“It’s a done deal,” he said.

今や家電製品の会社となったアップルにとって CES の方がピッタリくると Cult of Mac は書いている。参加をとりやめただけでも大打撃なのに、万が一 CES 乗り換えとなればマックワールドにとっては壊滅的だろう。

Pogue が Schiller から聞き出した開発スケジュールの話とは矛盾するように思えるが果たしてどうだろうか。

サンフランシスコ近郊に住んでいた頃欠かさず通ったマックワールドがそんな運命に見舞われることだけは避けて欲しいと思う。
