GeForce 9 マザーボード
Nvidia は、アップルの新 MacBook / MacBook Pro でデビューしたマザーボードのデスクトップ版を今週発表した。新しい GeForce 9-Series マザーボードは月曜に発表され、今月中には主要 PC メーカーから登場する。
Nvidia this week introduced a desktop variation of the same motherboard design that debuted as part of Apple’s new MacBook and MacBook Pro last week. Introduced Monday, the new GeForce 9-Series motherboards are coming from leading PC manufacturers this month.

これまでの MacBook シリーズのアキレス腱がインテルの統合型グラフィックスチップセットだった。今回 Nvidia 製のグラフィックスチップセット GeForece 9400M を採用したことにより高速グラフィックス処理が可能になった。

もっと小さなサイズでも・・・
さらに Nvidia はこういっている。「このマザーボードはもっと小さなサイズでも提供される。他のチップメーカーがウルトラスリムメディアセンター PC 向けに作っているサイズよりもっと小さいものを・・・」
What’s more, Nvidia says, the motherboard is being offered in a “much smaller footprint than competing chipsets makes it ideal for small form factor and ultra-slim media center PCs.”

お馴染みのメーカー
Nvidia が発表したマザーボード製作メーカーには ASUS と Foxconn が含まれている。２社ともしばしばアップルの製造パートナーとなった会社だ。
Companies Nvidia has announced that are manufacturing the motherboard include ASUS and Foxconn, two frequent manufacturing partners of Apple’s.
以上の２点は、Mac mini の将来を考える上でヒントになるのではないか。あるウワサによると、少なくとも現行の形では Mac mini が製造中止になるのではないかという。
These last two items may provide some clues to the future of the long lamented Mac mini, which, according to one report, may be on its way out—at least in its current form.

唯一遅いインテル製統合型グラフィックス
Mac mini が最後にアップデートされたのは 2007 年だった。アップルのコンシューマ製品の中では唯一インテル製の統合型グラフィックスチップセットのマザーボードを使っている。マザーボード自体の設計も遅いもので、アップルの他のマックラインナップと異なりワイヤレスの 802.11n にも対応していない。
Last updated in 2007, the Mac mini is the sole remaining product in Apple’s computer line that still has a motherboard which uses slower Intel integrated graphics. It also sports a much slower motherboard design and doesn’t have 802.11n draft spec-based wireless networking, unlike the rest of Apple’s Mac line.

Mac mini あるいはほかのもの・・・
Mac mini がアップルの他のコンシューマラップトップと同じように Nvidia の GeForce 9 マザーボードを使うことも考えられる。mini でなければそれに似たほかのものに、それも近いうちに・・・

Mac mini の製造中止について最初に触れたのは Gizmodo［日本語］だった。
その後ラスベガスのサーバー運営会社 Macminicolo が中小企業への売れ行きからそれに反論を唱えた。（ここのサーバールームの写真は一見に値する。）
Macworld の推論はもっと可能性がありそうな気がする。
少なくとも他社が Nvidia のマザーボードを採用するようになれば、アップルも対抗上ほっておけないのではないか。GeForce 9 のスピードアップと Mini DisplayPort の採用が重なればかなりのインパクトがありそうに思えるが・・・
